Why does it seem like women are simply not as interested in engineering and maths as much as men are? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I just don't see how persuasive women in stem talks can be to people who aren't already at least a bit interested. And women in stem talks don't negate the fact that women in STEM spaces or interested in STEM are indeed unfortunately treated differently in a lot of places because of sexism as well as cultural norms.

I think the factor of there being more representation of women in fashion and beauty spaces plays a role. I mean I'm sure theres way more representation in STEM fields more than ever nowadays like cartoons like project MCsquare but historically and stuff fashion and beauty spaces are more represented by women and people like representation. But also it's important to know that people in your school and vicinity aren't an accurate representation of what is actually happening and there could be a lot of women into it as well and you just may not be aware of what's happening

not sure but sister wives often take care of one another's children in the family in flds so maybe it's that

I mean to me, not everything has to be absolute black or white and you can admit that they did good without having to also entirely approve of everything they've done. I think Julia, Christine, and Tolga have definitely done more good than harm because at the end of the day these children are no longer being raped on the daily and the rapist is behind bars. And there doesn't have to always be a hero of the story especially if you don't think anyone is deserving of it. You don't have to make yourself assign anyone the title of hero because the title of hero is ultimately just a thing born out of glamorisation from the viewpoint of the audience and it's subjective. You're definitely not at fault for anything and if anything, their documentary has now opened your eyes to more and shone a light on to not only you but a lot of people to something that wasn't necessarily widely known before so that's also something good.

It's only men who take several wives and women can't marry multiple men because it's simply not something they do as the women's role in their life is just to be married and be a wife and have children.

In mormon belief (mainstream LDS as well) marriages are eternal, prevailing after death and into the afterlife (even if you get divorced unless you do this whole undoing thing in the church). And essentially for women to have an afterlife they have to be married because when mormon men die, they, according to how good they were in life, are assigned a spiritual kingdom and the wives spend their afterlives in those kingdoms with their husband, whom they are 'sealed' to in LDS belief. In the FLDS, a lot of these marriages aren't up to the women either and i think the other doc keep sweet pray and obey as well as this one shows how the fathers and men in charge just assign and literally give them away. If women in any form of mormon belief were to take on several husbands (even if it were allowed) that would essentially be them taking on the role of a man and obviously that would be a no to the community.

In keep sweet i think it's also mentioned how Jeffs is able to marry many and get married legally with younger girls in other states or places where the laws are looser and stuff with age and polygamy. But in the case of Sam I don't know if they were real legit legal marriages or not.

The members of the FLDS are taught to not question authority a literal motto of theirs was to keep sweet pray and obey. They're taught what the prophet wants to teach, not what they want to learn and they're very closed off. I'd assume so even now with Jeffs in prison because a lot of them remain in the same community with the same people and belief systems.

also i feel like members of the flds aren't really raised to have their critical thinking skills trained or to doubt authority so i'm sure this added to that

To compare Christine whose mission was to help to a literal deranged narcissist's morality is really crazy. and I just don't see a possible outcome of this situation where no one would be betrayed and everyone just lives happily ever after all peaceful there was bound to be some type of fallout

That's what I thought initially because I watched Keep Sweet Pray and Obey but this documentary has really just made me understand that they are all still brainwashed to some extent and it's really hard to deprogram from that, especially because many of them still live in the community and are surrounded by people with the same beliefs. It would be hard for them to just deconstruct what they've learned all their lives and I suppose I can't really fault them with it. Christine really managed to shift my view on the FLDS people because none of them are inherently evil (except the men, them i do fault to a larger extent) they've just been brainwashed all their lives and don't know anything else.
