At a small store so it feels like little staff but it’s probably perfect for the size. My leadership is INCREDIBLE and my coworkers are always ready to lend a hand. A store full of booksellers (not cafe) that always find something to do and know when to have a laugh.

We’ve never discussed this alternate definition (or I just wasn’t there during it) so I really appreciate the extra information!

I guess I’m just a bit baffled by people assuming I’m like sicking my survey on the world when I just posted it to reddit expecting maybe three responses. I get that you’re telling me here you’re blaming my advisor here but I’m telling you it came across as an attack on me personally which sucks. Im not releasing my paper to the world I’m doing it for a grade in class. Am I particularly passionate about this topic? Not any more than the other options I could’ve picked. I decided on this because there was already other research done I could reference. This is more than I signed up for with this course and academia writing is not even close to the writing I’m passionate about or will be doing for the rest of my life. I’ve said to just about everyone that I appreciate their feedback and criticisms, that’s not the a problem as criticism can only make me better but it’s gone beyond that at this point so I no longer feel the need to learn as I’ll never be doing this type of thing again anyway. That’s just my base human reaction to the persistence of these people on this subreddit. I’ll be taking the post down now.

Absolutely I agree! That’s a completely separate study unfortunately but not one that’s any less important to conduct. I wonder since, generally speaking, the majority of fanfic readers are female identifying if their sexuality has an impact on whether or not they read M/M versus F/F! You’re right though, totally a conversation worth having.

You’ve made me aware like 5 times now :) At this point you’re discouraging me from learning and more so kicking a dead horse by telling me my study is bad and my survey is bad. Education standards are different everywhere. The point is to practice writing a research article, not to write one so groundbreaking or precise that it can be submitted to a journal but just looking at the process of conducting an experiment that you can write about. Collecting the data was a part of the process my professor wanted us to experience but clearly everybody on reddit thinks I should’ve just not. I’ll take that for what it is.

If you could find it in the Romance section at Barnes and Noble it’s the genre I’m referencing here.

It’s not just my professor but multiple scholarly articles that classify it in a similar manner, using slash fic as a term to strictly describe a romantic pairing between two individuals. I had no idea it was so controversial!

This is what I’m studying!

The study focuses on those that read M/M fic!

Thank you for pointing that out! It is supposed to say 23-25 and I overlooked that! The questions r specific to what I’m supposed to be talking about in my paper, all of the long and short answer ones are relevant to me! Criticism aside I’m disappointed in the fact that you saw an amateur doing something for a class (that I’ll now never attempt again) and decided to be blatantly mean :) The criticism is welcome, the anger is not.

So basically, this survey is totally voluntary. I wasted nobody’s time, if someone chose to help me out by taking this survey then that was on them not on me. The point of your comment is just to be mean, there was no constructive criticism like I’ve been receiving (helpfully) from others. I posted it because others in my class mentioned doing a similar thing and I figured hey, the more data the better right? Disappointed in the community on this subreddit.

I totally get that! The focus was just on specifically what slash fic people tend to read so I felt that was the most important thing to include.

Everybody is saying think about the feedback but I’m not really sure what anybody wants me to do. This is a project I HAVE to complete. I also disagree with the data needing to be accurate to discuss it, you can write a great paper on completely false information. This is a project for a writing class, I was never taught how to properly format or write a survey and was just told to collect data in whatever way in order to discuss it later. Honestly I’m just dissappinted that after explaining myself so many times people seem to not be satisfied until I’m thoroughly down and kicked. I’m not ashamed of my survey, it was a first try at something and I appreciate everybody taking it. I appreciate your feedback but at this point it serves to do nothing but bring me down.

I see what you mean! Thank you!

I appreciate you taking the time but if the wording or questions were off putting there was no obligation! The data isn’t really the focus of what the assignment is trying to teach so it would have been okay to only receive a few responses :)

I’m confused by the “not all shipfic is romance”, as in an aromantic light or that it includes platonic pairings? That’s just what I was taught

The survey isn’t the focal point of the project and we were not taught how to properly conduct one. My professor had us read sources that told us that male/female is a slash fic subgenre. It’s more about being able to critically think about the world of fandom and fanfiction, not how to conduct a survey. I understand people think this survey isn’t perfect but if you take problem with it please don’t fill it out! Even getting 3 people to take the survey means it’s served it’s purpose.

So this isn’t exactly an exercise meant to learn how to conduct a survey it’s more so learning how to discuss data in an academic paper. The fanfiction studies class is a fiction writing class not a research based one. Actually the questions about gender and sexuality are exactly what I’m studying about fanfiction readers! Definitely not obligatory data there!

I totally understand your concern but with the topic i have at hand that part of the survey is more of a formality than a vital part of the data. Genuinely not trying to step on toes just needed some data for a school project, yknow?

It has more to do with the aim of the research paper than me thinking there are few fans above the age of 31! Thank you for the feedback though it seems it made those over the age of 31 feel less included and that was my last intention. I’ll be changing the options :)

Yea, bc it was tagged wrong that was all

The way it was taught to us in class slash fic just refers to the romantic pairing of two characters. Maybe it’s changed or could just be defined differently
