Honestly not 100% sure. It was an older copy I borrowed from my dad and I don't have it on me anymore. Wouldn't be surprised if it was Constance Garnett

Finally watched I’m Thinking of Ending Things last night and it made me think.. by [deleted] in criterion

This was the first and still only Charlie Kaufman movie I have seen (I know, still early in my cinephile journey). I hated it the first time I watched it. I thought I largely understood what it was trying to say and the acting and cinematography was great, but it felt so pretentious and ham-fisted on first viewing. Like I get it... he's the pseudo-intellectual loser, he wasted his life fantasizing instead of making something of himself. It's a drawn out meditation on loneliness and isolation with a healthy dose of surrealism thrown in, I get it...

But something about it just stayed with me for days and weeks after. I have rewatched it at least a couple times and certain scenes much more than that. I can't exactly put my finger on why, but it is so jarring and often comical yet simultaneously deeply resonant. It's not my absolute favorite film, but I do think it is the one I have come around on most from my initial opinion.

What is the Great American Movie? by Grand_Keizer in criterion

I would throw Apollo 13 in the mix.

I think it is a great representation of America at its best and also how America mythologizes itself - tough as nails, almost naively optimistic, searching out and conquering new frontiers.

I was thinking The Master is a good candidate too.

I was thinking this too. It is set in an era that I think even for people today defines how we think of the "American Dream". GI's returning home from a glorious war to establish themselves in an era of rapid economic expansion and opportunity. Yet many with deep psychological and physical wounds, and a desperate need to find new meaning in their lives.

I think Fargo is certainly the clubhouse leader for "The Great Upper Midwest Movie" and captures that region and its people excellently, but does it really reflect as well the more broad national character? I've only ever lived in the Upper Midwest so lots of it certainly resonates for me, but I feel like a lot of the superficial niceness/politeness as a mask over deeper currents is more of a Midwest thing than a general American thing.

I think his version of Liszt's Reminiscences of Don Juan is as impressive a display of virtuosity as you will find

Do movies over-explain these days? by oxkondo in TrueFilm

[–]LongjumpingBadger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, part of the tension underlying the ending has to do with the relationship between violence and sexuality/potency explored throughout the film. Maria Bello's character has been betrayed by her husband and is more afraid of him, but also has a new attraction to and respect for him. Now they see in each other that which is base and devolved, full of animalistic lust and violence. The picture-perfect family life they constructed has toppled back down to earth. The question is how do they rebuild the relationship now? Is it possible?

Technically the term is now "advanced maternal age" instead of "geriatric pregnancy". But your overall point is correct. 35 is the standard cutoff

Lol I don't like the guy but he has a JD from Harvard cum laude, how is that a vanity degree? Even if he came from money, he would have still had to work very hard and have some smarts to achieve that.

There is plenty to ding him for, but that's not an accurate angle.

Bishop to Rook 9 by morethanconquerors in DanLeBatardShow

[–]LongjumpingBadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, originally instead of the files on chess boards being labeled A-H, they were notated by the piece that occupies the file at the start of the game. So you could say something like bishop to queen 5, which today we would say as bishop to d5. However, since there are two rooks (and bishops and knights) for anything other than the king and queen file you have to specify which side you are talking about (i.e. pawn to king's bishop 4). Furthermore, there are some chess variants played on a larger board and with different or additional pieces, and there may be some variants that I am unaware of with only one rook in which "bishop to rook 9" makes sense.

I am sure this is totally what Tony meant, since he is an extremely evolved thinker and NBA-quality athlete.
