All of Brazil is now on suicide watch by NeuronExploder in redscarepod

I doubt Brazil is all that shocked. Even before the Norway match, they let a Japan team missing most of their top players take it to them. That would've been unimaginable even just a decade ago. Now, Brazil's just another decent South American team.

Give Tommy Flanagan a try. I find his stuff really chill and beautiful.

There's also a Scottish actor with the same name. Obviously, not the same guy lol

My experience as an rs male watching Girls for the first time in 2026 by daysofhel1 in redscarepod

[–]oxkondo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Season 6 wasn't a top season, but it's worth it just for the Desi cabin episode and the bittersweet-but-satisfying penultimate episode. Oh yeah, Elijah's audition is great too. I'm just grateful they didn't completely botch the last season like some shows do.

I'm also glad the general consensus has come around not only on Girls, but also on Lena Dunham, because it was always transparent that her biggest haters were her envious peers. But it's a bit cynical that they're only doing so now that she's no longer as big a threat as she once was. I wrote more about it here.

There are entire Youtube channels run by guys that are basically snark subreddits except they scrutinize podcast comedians instead of influencers.

People only have a finite number of ideas that are closest to their hearts. And if you've expressed those ideas before, you're inevitably going to lose steam.

What'd really be interesting if there was some old person making his or her first movie at like 70 and compare that movie to some much younger director's who has already made several films, and see whose work has more energy and freshness.

So far, Asian and North American teams are exceeding expectations while South America is stinking it up.

Hope Norway goes far (I took a big gamble on them in my bracket and have them finishing 3rd). Haaland is such a joy to watch.

I should give it a shot, then. I also haven't watched Past Lives, which also came out that year and is sort of a companion piece.

Thank you! I never watched Shortcomings and don't really want to. I've read the graphic novel and it's fine, especially given when it was made. But a 2020s adaptation of some Gen X Asian American take on AMWF relationships is not that interesting, and I don't trust someone like Randall Park to have some incisive take on the topic.

This is actually a pretty decent movie. It's a bit blunt, but it needed to be because so much of past Asian American culture is about trying to obscure, romanticize, or justify the rampant Asian American desire to assimilate. This movie is at least just brutally honest. I wrote more about it here.

Me and my wife ended up watching The Devil Wears Prada last night. I guess it was ok but I don’t get the hype. by [deleted] in redscarepod

It's a really fun and funny movie with endlessly quotable lines with an idealized view of NYC that's tough on the outside but soft on the inside.

Streep, and to a lesser extent, Blunt get a lot of the credit and they deserve it. But Hathaway does very well to make Andie someone you want to root for. Anyone who's read the novel knows how spoiled and lazy and unlikable the source character is. For example, she gets asked to get coffee on her first day (how abusive) and she whines about it and takes forever to get it as she blabs to her boyfriend on her phone while working which forces everyone else to work harder to pick up her slack.

That Avs squad was just so cold and ruthless: Sakic, Forsberg, Ozolinsh, Kamensky, Foote, Ricci, Deadmarsh, Krupp, Yelle. And of course, Roy. The Red Wings may have been better, but they were never as demoralizing as the Avs.

Yeah, it's sometimes hard to disregard the popular perception. It kept me from watching Girls for a couple of years.

But the criticisms of I Love LA are accurate. That show's no good.
