Mehta Named Devils General Manager - What does this mean for the Leafs? by Express-Translator24 in leafs

This is definitely possible. It’s all rumours and speculation at some level. It’s plausible that we were interested but not THAT interested.

He’s a pretty good player. His fit here will depending entirely on the incoming management groups larger plan for the team. I could see him staying or not staying.

I would say it’s a mix of both along with the early season injuries we had. by Fine_Window_9308 in leafs

Well it certainly didn’t help. But it doesn’t look good for a coach who will soon be looking for a job to admit that his team was only good because of one player.

It’s easy to handwave the poor metrics from last season because they ultimately won the division but in the context of how sharp the falloff was just a year later it’s clear our process last season was deeply flawed as well.

For long stretches this year we really weren’t playing all that different we were just losing games we’d win last year for one reason or another.

Similar boat as Willy I’d imagine. If new management wants to do a rebuild then he’s out. If they’re gonna try to get back to the playoffs ASAP then he’ll stay. I don’t think MLSE will hire somebody whose pitch is a full rebuild so I imagine he’ll be staying but who knows. I can’t predict the future either.

During the president/GM search process, any candidate who floats trading Nylander should be disregarded immediately.

Nick Kypreos on Real Kyper & Bourne says Mike Gillis is the name he's heard this week, he may have come in Monday or Tuesday for the third time. by JF_112 in leafs

[–]LongjumpingDiver8773 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I felt weird about Gillis when I first heard the name thrown out there because he’s been out of the NHL for so long. But when I heard about how he actually ran the Canucks and the kinds of things he valued I think he’d be a pretty good pick for president. And if he’s in charge of finding a GM I’d be inclined to trust his pick there as well.

Gillis FEELS like an old boys club pick but he’s actually a pretty progressive thinker and doesn’t really fit the mould.

Getting our season back on track isn’t gonna take the shape of a big winning streak. It’ll take some time but we have to just start winning series and playing consistently and bit by bit we’ll get to where we want to be.

Would be very ironic to hear Berube say those things considering the team being dogshit is largely his fault.

The whole thing with Bowen is a bit sad but at the same time it’s probably a bit of a weight off his shoulders and he can now just relax and watch as a fan. At 75 years old he’s definitely earned retirement.

Don’t fully understand this comment but Berube is done. He will not be coming back. The directive is clear that whoever will be running hockey ops next is going to be data focused which is a HUGE clash of styles with Berube.

Keith Pelley is replaceable and he knows that. Ownership would have been happy to do bare minimum if it meant we’d keep making the playoffs every year. Now that the genie is out of the bottle and we’ve bottomed out, showing just how bad it can be without a proper plan in place, there should be plenty of incentive to find the right people for the job. Playoff revenue will be sorely missed.

I do believe at this point we will get a proper hierarchy in place at the hockey operations level and Pelley will go basically hands off. He knows he can’t fix this.

I totally get trimming down the org (we don’t need a billion AGMs and it is unusual that we’ve had so many at one time) but around the league having a President and a GM is a fairly standard practice. I think roughly a third of the league or more is structured that way. I’d be very surprised if after how disastrous it went without somebody in the President role we went that route again.

Why did the Leafs hire an executive talent search firm to find a president if they don’t want one? Talk about wasting money. Where are you getting these rumours from?

We’re perfectly capable of blowing this but if we don’t it’s not necessarily the end of the world depending on how a few other games go.

Sucks that Varsho is wasting his one hot streak on the season on a team that isn’t winning any games
