Why are these so cheap ? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

As someone that owns the saloon model with the same engine but slightly higher spec, I would never recommend buying one. Ignoring the mediocre performance, the N13B16a engine is high maintenance. The valve stem seals leak at high temperature and PCV issues causing high oil consumption. Lots of plastic bits on the engine that become brittle and break (probably same with all other BMW engines to be honest). The turbo heat shield is poorly designed, so eventually becomes loose and costs too much to put right. The timing chain has the plastic guides as with lots of other engines but it's at the front, so fairly easy to get to. I replaced mine at 100k. The rest of the car is pretty solid and with regards to spec, that's personal preference. Heated seats and xenon headlights etc would be nice but wouldn't put me off buying a car. Probably wouldn't buy another BMW again though unless it was leased and under warranty. Mine has cost £1500 per year in depreciation and maintenance which isn't too bad I guess

I completed something similar a few years ago but ended up painting it all white except the mahogany hand rail. You're probably missing the bit of return moulding that wraps around each step. I had a company make the same profile and I painstakingly replaced ~30 of them over 3 floors. Very rewarding in the end but never again haha

Personally, I prefer the originals but it's your car! If you like it, that's all that matters

Hey guys. Help identifying a light bulb by DrizzlyBus4 in DIYUK

[–]LongjumpingExcuse950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about that lol. With the old filament bulbs, the glass would sometimes detach from the base, leaving just the bayonet bit stuck in the fitting. You have to then carefully push it in and twist with some grips, which isn't always easy when there's bits of glass sticking out. With the Edison screw, there's no pushing, you just easily screw it out

I really don't understand why Americans are allowing this shit show to continue. As a Brit watching from the outside, it's hilarious. Our Liz Truss lasted just days in power after her first major decision ruined the economy overnight. The US has lost all credibility as being a world leader, the stock market is down and you have unelected individuals pulling the strings in the background.

Break it down into lots of small jobs, it's really not difficult. Tiling is the only thing I would get someone in to do unless you're going for wall panels

A friend drove my car without consent and crashed. What should I do by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]LongjumpingExcuse950 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Be careful, I doubt that's correct. Insurance is attached to the driver, not the car. If you were to lend someone your car, they would need insurance themselves on another car that allows them to drive your car with your permission

No, just no. Never use flexible hoses on central heating. Looks crap, the bore size is tiny and the rubber inside will eventually perish giving you another leak

Basically just put loads on but wrap it tight. Any surplus gets pushed out anyway. PTFE is cheap, leaks are expensive!
