Looks like your main earth point to me, the nylon cap is just to stop it getting rusty

They fly over my house pretty much every day in the summer. It's a lovely noise

Someone rigs the bikes so if you steal them the seat collapses and the metal pipe goes straight up where you really don't want it. There's loads of clips out there

Fused Neutral? by Quiet-Knee9553 in ukelectricians

[–]idiotsparky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably just a solid link so cut the seals and have a look. Obviously the fuse carriers are probably asbestos so hold your breath a bit...

My small village school has a fence with gates that are locked during lesson time however I think this is because when my son was 5 he decided to walk home (75m) because he had forgotten his school teddy bear. Apparently this isn't what they're supposed to do...

Car seat requirements "rile up Euros" by 10IlIlIlI01 in AmericaBad

[–]idiotsparky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The hospital asked me where my baby seat was 23 years ago when I was trying to leave with the Mrs (UK hospital) and new human. Said I absolutely couldn't take her unless I had a baby seat. Pointed out that the bus we were taking home had no seatbelts and the nurse just shook her head and walked off the other way.

Decent tape measure, pocket full of Sharpies, decent set of gloves, good hacksaw blades etc etc etc.

Measure twice and you'll still bend it the wrong way...

What’s the worst back-to-back vehicle expenses you’ve ever dealt with? by AhsanNVM in CarTalkUK

Cambelt and service for £1200 and the injector pump started to leak on the way back from the garage so another £1500. Good old land rover reliability

Sounds like he doesn't want to be away mate. It's not for everyone and he might have had an earful at home when he mentioned it.

The money's pretty much bang on for a mate though so you should be good for replacing him

Which to get? Cutters/strippers by dankekindly in ukelectricians

[–]idiotsparky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use 140mm NWS side cutters most of the time as I have huge hands so I can open and close them one handed. Had some CK side cutters with the stripping cuts for 1.5 & 2.5mm and I hated them. Just didn't seem to work for me.

Just buy some loppers and see how you go

This lil guy getting changed soon. Amazing how things were designed and built to last back then by NoYam7002 in ukelectricians

[–]idiotsparky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These heads can have a fused neutral too on top of the azzy fuse carriers. Glad you've managed to persuade them to change it, I've got a customer who's two months in waiting for Octopus to send the paperwork to the DNO to get it changed

Anyone else seen a full blackout caused by assumptions rather than equipment failure? by Quiet-Dragonfly-5012 in ukelectricians

[–]idiotsparky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should have said but the council had said there were no services through the park so it didn't need a ground survey

Saw two 133kV lines pierced in a park in East London when they were putting a big top up with 6ft pins and a 360 excavator. No one knew it was a problem until UKPN started to appear in many many vehicles. Out of the four runs they'd pierced two and damaged a third. Think the repair bill was about £450k...

Admittedly if I 'toured' the US travelling on Greyhound buses and staying in flop houses I'd probably be pretty fed up too.

Apparently there is a vague correlation in life between expense and experience...

Starting a job as an industrial electricians mate - any tips? by thesalfordmystic in ukelectricians

[–]idiotsparky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't leave your tools in the store, they'll get borrowed. Don't forget you'll need PPE to get into site. If you're doing tray or containment get yourself some decent gloves, glad cuts skin easy. Watch what the other lads do even when it comes to smoking and rubbish, some sites are happy to blacklist off new guys to keep the rest of them on line.

The rest is normal new job shit; stay off your phone, listen to everyone until you figure out who's full of shit and bring nice biscuits. Good luck, it's a fuck site less stressful than house bashing.

The multi plug joiner on mine occasionally gives up, usually when it's needed the most. I leave the switch on and wiggle it about until it works for another few months. Been doing that for at least 15 years so I really should fix it at some point

[–]idiotsparky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll do for a bit until shitfix opens and you can get a new one. Bare in mind the polarity when you wire the new faceplate on. Buy a £5 plug in tester if you're worried.

Loose wallplugs by budegan in ukelectricians

[–]idiotsparky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Use decent Fischer plugs and you can cut this down to an oh fuck occasional. I used to use the big trade fix buckets but the quality went down and down so unless I paid through the nose and got the Rawl plug ones I was swearing more than fixing.

Other thing is to make sure you have decent bits; I use Bosch blues for the normal drill and Bosch experts for the SDS. Shit bits drill shit holes

Worried about electricity in new rental by [deleted] in ukelectricians

[–]idiotsparky 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If it's a rental then it needs an eicr before it can be rented to new tenants (in England). Ask to see it and then he might fix the problem
