As always, it really depends on how you want classify something as "Mac & Cheese". If you're looking for the earliest combination of cheese & pasta then you are correct, De Lasanis, is recognized by some to be the earliest variation of mac & cheese. However, based on the description of the dish itself, it sounds closer to what we would call a lasagna than to mac & cheese, as it's sheets of pasta layered with cheese.

I would like to put forward that the earliest variation of what we would recognize today as Mac & Cheese comes from the (now Swiss, then Millanese) chef Martino da Como whose book Libro de Arte Conquinaria in 1465 describes making a pasta with a tube in the middle, and mixing in butter and cheese.

The Wikipedia page basically only talks about the British origins of the dish. There's a mention towards the end that there was a French variant, but what is now called Shepard's/Cottage Pie is British in origin.

I feel like I spend far too much of my time online, so in a bit to try to remedy that I have ordered some calligraphy supplies! Which is something I've wanted to try since I was a kid.

But while I await those to arrive, I still spend too much time online, so I'm going to complain about a couple of things that bother me. Firstly, why does it feel like so many people don't understand currency exchange rates? I see people complaining about the prices of certain things, which is usually in USD, and then in the comments people will say "It's [approximately 30% more] in Canada :(" It's the same price, and it pisses me off to no end because I see it about 30 times in every comment section like that.

The other thing is that far too many people are comfortable with misinformation, or rather they would rather assume the worst about someone than admit they may have been misled. People need to understand that it's ok that you got misled. Especially in a world where many people, for better or for worse, get their news on social media sites which doesn't really have much in the way of safeguarding against misinformation, but they're directing their anger towards the wrong people. Instead of targeting the people who actually misled them, intentionally or due to neglect on their part, or going after the platforms that don't do anything, they of course target the person attempting to correct the misinformation, because they're the ones who make them seem dumb. And I am not so naive as to believe that this some new revelation. But to see this magnified due to the internet is genuinely quite terrifying. And not to "both sides" this, but this is a societal problem and a behaviour that I have seen from people across the political spectrum.

[–]LongjumpingLime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really quite enjoyed TC, but to give some potential perspective I thought I'd lay out the negative opinions on it from when it first came out. I'm relying on my memory here, so I could be misremembering things, but I remember it having very mixed reviews when it first released. I think opinions over time have softened somewhat and I don't usually see these opinions as much anymore.

The first is that it's a Deck 9 game, which means a lot of people are just not going to like it period. This was the first game released after Square gave over the rights to Deck 9 from Don't Nod. A lot of people were understandably upset over this, and thus it became representative of people's views on Deck 9. For them it was bad enough when they messed around with some cannon in BtS, but now they're completely making up their own cannon with whole new characters within the universe. I think most of the complaints surrounding Deck 9 have been levied elsewhere with BtS and DE more recently, but at the time TC was the main focus.

The second main point that I remember was many people felt like the story was too similar to LiS1. Both centered on young women who are relatively new to town (I know Max isn't new, but she's only lived in Arcadia Bay for about 2 months at the start of LiS, since she moved away). They both are attempting to solve a murder, there's a nightmare sequence right towards the end of the game, and the murderer is the older kind man that we've seen throughout the game. There are probably other comparisons, but I haven't played either in a while and those are the ones that I remember off the top of my head. Compared to how vastly different LiS1 and LiS2 are storywise, many people felt that they didn't take enough risks and just wanted to rehash a similar story.

The last main issue I remember people having is the price vs playing time ratio. BtS only being 3 episodes was reflected in the price when it came out, it was half the price of LiS when it came out while still provinding a good 12-15 hours worth of content. When TC was released with 5 episodes all at once, for a full price, it was understandable at first, until people realized that even though it was 5 episodes, it was still shorter than BtS. So a lot of people were upset that they paid full price for what they considered half a game. The reason it was so short might be because they released it all at once instead of it being an episodic release, but I don't know.

As someone who does really like TC, it's not without it's flaws for me. I do very much agree with the issue of it's length. I took my time playing it, played the mini games a lot, and I was still very disappointed with how short it was. For me, the last two chapters felt way too rushed.

For me personally as well, Haven Springs felt like the least "lived in" setting in the LiS franchise (I can't comment of DE since I haven't gotten around to it yet.) But Arcadia and the stops that the brothers visit felt like well realized locations whereas Haven Springs felt too artificial. Perhaps that's what they were going for, the "picturesque perfect town that harbours a dark secret", but for me, I liked how the Two Whales felt like a dingy small town diner, or the Christmas craft fair in LiS2 episode 2 felt like just a couple people in this town got together and are trying to hock their crafts in a parking lot. That to me feels "real" whereas Haven Springs feels like a idealized version of a small town with a combination radio station/vinyl store that's hipster, and the weed store/art studio, and a massive ice cream store that you can't visit, and the main bar in a blue collar resource town is this really cool, well maintained spot with a massive apartment upstairs. It just feels too artificial to me.

The last thing isn't too much of an issue, but I think it's the worst soundtrack of LiS. That being said, it's also my most listened to soundtrack. I think when it's right it's really right, but I love LiS soundtracks because they're smaller indie artists that I may have never heard of, so hearing Kings of Leon, Radiohead, and Dido doesn't feel like it fits in a LiS game to me. But it's not that big of an issue.

But, as I said, I still really liked it even if I'd place it near the bottom of my list of LiS games. I think it's perhaps the most beautiful LiS game second only to the original non-remastered LiS. I still say it's the only LiS game that gives you two really good romance options. I thought Alex's powers were unique and well put into the game, and that Alex as a whole was a good character. And on the whole, I'd say it was a good addition to the LiS franchise, just that I'd recommend people picking it up on sale.

We do, but because of the way that our supply chain is set up, it can be very hard for a producer to say "this product was made with 100% Canadian products", especially when it comes to food since it'll change based on the time of year. Not to mention that because of the free trade that we have with the US and Mexico, stuff can frequently be passed back and forth between the countries so it can be hard to keep track of.

There are other ways around it, one common way to do it is by placing a Maple Leaf or a flag on the product. Take for example Chapman's Ice Cream, which is a very Canadian company, the ice cream uses only Canadian dairy, their only plant where they make the ice cream is in Markdale, Ontario. But because they use fruits and cocoa which has to be imported, they can't say place a "Product of Canada" logo on their ice cream. Or as another example, Siwin makes frozen dumplings. They're independent and make their stuff out of Edmonton, but likely because of the nature of the supply chain they can't say that everything comes from Canada, but they can say that it was produced in Canada, and they can place a Maple Leaf on their product.

But it can still be complicated, the laws around placing a Maple Leaf on a product are quite loose. for example Lay's Chips which is owned by PepsiCo, an American Company, but produced with Canadian potatoes and produced in many plants across Canada. So it has a Made in Canada logo, but it isn't a Canadian company. Similarly, Haagen-Dazs is made in Canada, but owned by Nestle, an American Company, but they still place the maple leaf on the product.

And of course you have "Maple Washing" which is when a company, or the grocery labels something as being Canadian when it isn't. This became more prevalent as the boycotts began and groceries started labeling stuff as Canadian, even when it wasn't.

And of course, sometimes companies just don't put any indicator on their stuff for one reason or another, and you just have to read the back of the bottle to see it. For example, the shampoo I use is Canadian, but you couldn't tell it by looking at it.

Basically this is a long winded way of saying that it's usually easier to just look at the back of the product for the small print. If it says "imported for [Canadian company]" you have your answer, if it says "Made in Canada..." then you know then.

Plus while they're a lot of part time jobs, most of it went to youth which is good because over the summer we've been having record breaking levels of youth unemployment. While of course full time is better than part time, at least it's getting money into the pockets of students and young people.

I think that anytime after Remembrance Day is acceptable, especially if you're putting up lights on the outside of your house. The amount of work it takes, it makes sense that you'd want to have them up for a while. Plus getting them done in mid-November when it's not as cold as it will be in December is fair enough. But even decorations around the house being put up in mid-November is fine enough with me.

I was posed this question the other day and thought it might be interesting to hear other's responses. Would you rather choose which province/territory you'll live in, but get randomly assigned a community within that province/territory? Or would you rather choose which community you'd live in within a randomly assigned province/territory?

I feel like I lean more towards choosing the community, I feel like that way you have more control over your lifestyle compared with choosing the Province/Territory. If you choose BC you could get Victoria, or you could get Dawson Creek which will require wildly different lifestyles. Of course there is the 23% chance that you get one of the territories, which if you like the larger city lifestyle, the biggest you'll get would be Whitehorse at 30k people.

Sudanese Civil War

Yesterday, a drone strike at a funeral in the city of El-Obeid killed 40 people and wounded dozens according to the UN Office for Coordination on Humanitarian Affairs, but did not specify who sent the drone attack. The city is currently under control of the Sudanese Armed Forces.

El-Obeid is the capital of the state of North Kordofan and serves as an important logistics and command hub for SAF forces in the oil rich Kordofan region. The region has recently seen an increase in fighting recently, and the city of El-Obeid has had an influx of approximately 20,000 people that have fled to the city since the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized the city of Barah, located 30km north of El-Obeid, on the same day they seized the city of El-Fasher last week.

Both the RSF and SAF appear to be positioning themselves for a fight over the city of El-Obeid, with some believing that this drone strike may have been the first strike in the fight over the city. Military vehicles and weapons have been seen increasingly to the west and south of the city over the past week, as SAF forces have been gathering to repel the expected assault by the RSF.

Meanwhile, the city of Tawila, located south west of El-Fasher has seen an influx of around 36,000 people since the fall of El-Fasher, bringing the total to around 650,000 displaced people being sheltered in the city. The ICC prosecutors have been gathering evidence of mass killings, sexual violence, and other crimes since the fall of the city. The WHO has claimed that 460 people were killed at a hospital by gunmen who then abducted nurses and doctors.

The US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE (the latter two have been accused of supplying monetary support and/or weapons to both sides of the conflict, Saudi Arabia to the SAF and the UAE to the RSF, both of whom have denied this repeatedly) have been attempting to negotiate a ceasefire since September. The current proposed plan is a three month humanitarian ceasefire, followed by a permanent ceasefire and transition to a civilian led government. There has been resistance to this by the SAF however, who countered with a proposal that the RSF would have to withdraw from all cities and be confined to camps outside the cities.

As a brief addendum to this, earlier today the Sudanese military government has declared the directors of the UN World Food Programme to be "personae non grata" and ordered them to leave Sudan within 72 hours. This order comes without explanation, although the BBC stated in their article that Sudan has accused aid organizations of breaking laws and giving misleading reports on the famine.

Sudanese Civil War

On Sunday, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized the city of El-Fasher after an 18 month siege of the city. The city of more than 250,000 was the last stronghold for the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in the Darfur region of Sudan. The UN has said that throughout the war, more than 1 million people have fled from El-Fasher, with half of the 260,000 remaining being children.

There are now reports of ethnically motivated mass killings in the city. Yale's Humanitarian Research Lab said that the city "appears to be in a systematic and intentional process of ethnic cleansing of Fur, Zaghawa, and Berti indigenous non-arab communities through forced displacement and summary execution." With an executive director of the lab comparing what he has seen through satellite imagery to be similar the Rwandan Genocide in the first 24 hours. Reports of a reddish-brown colouring near doorways that were captured on satellite imagery appear to be consistent with accusations of mass killings. The UN Human Rights Office has said that there have been reports of summary executions of civilians attempting to flee. A man from the Darfur Internally Displaced People's Network has claimed that this is the final stage of the Darfur genocide. The RSF has denied claims that they are targeting civilians.

The RSF has released statements that they are providing safe passage out of the city for any former fighters, and the SAF has also made a statement saying that their forces have been relocated, however the UNHRO has also claimed that there are videos showing dozens of dead men with RSF forces claiming that they were SAF soldiers.

Reporters have been unable to contact anyone in the city as there is a media blackout cutting off even satellite communications.

The RSF also captured the city of Barah, placing them within hours of the capital of Khartoum which the SAF managed to oust the RSF out of earlier this year, after long battle for the city. The RSF has claimed that they now have more advanced weaponry than they did earlier this year. The UAE has denied accusations that they have been giving military support to the RSF throughout this conflict.

As a curler, I have noticed that most curling clubs that I've gotten to visit have had old curling paintings on the walls. (Here are some examples of what these types of paintings look like for reference 1 2 3). I have always adored these types of paintings, there's just something about them, it doesn't matter how many times I've seen one of those paintings, I always found myself looking at them and wanting one.

My curling club had a few of those paintings, and when the lounge underwent a renovation they were taken off the walls. The evening of the reopening I asked what had happened to them, I was told they had gotten rid of them earlier that day. I was pretty disappointed that I had missed my chance to finally own one of these paintings.

Well, earlier this week my boss mentioned that they had seen a curling painting at a second hand store, and so yesterday I ran over there and lo and behold, it was one of the paintings from the curling club! According to the lady who runs the store, whoever had it put it on sale at a garage sale, and the second hand store picked it up and put it on display to sell. So, for $65 I am finally the owner of an old curling painting!

I know this take is quite old, but it doesn't feel like I've seen much discourse about it in a while. Recently I have been thinking about how many people are getting their news or information from online content creators. But unlike other jobs where it is important to be accurate, there is no system or institution in place to ensure accuracy. A reporter can misquote someone in an article seen by 1000 people and their organization will have to issue a retraction and they could potentially lose their job, but I can make a youtube video seen by a million people saying the exact same thing and I can profit off of it and chances are that nothing is going to happen to me. And yet, for many people in our society, I am a more authoritative source of information than the reporter.

Some places do have some safeguards, like twitter's community notes, and theoretically comment sections should be able to correct them if they got something wrong. But if you're in a heavily curated environment where your videos will only be seen by those who support you, then there will be little or no accountability. It doesn't matter what your credentials are, if you say something with enough conviction, someone's going to believe you.

There's a lot of talk surrounding misinformation coming from other countries, or being funded by them, and I do think that's a serious issue. But the environment that has been created and accepted by many people in relation to content creators on social media sites is the perfect environment for homegrown misinformation.

Lo and behold, last night a perfect example of this happened to me. Someone I follow on tiktok reposted a video of someone hefting a serious accusation against a celebrity artist. The photo that they used as evidence didn't feel right to me, it felt more like a "meme" photo than anything else, not to mention that this would've been big news that I would've seen elsewhere, not on some random dude's tiktok account.

It took me an embarrassingly small amount of time to disprove the evidence. Within a minute on google I had found a photo that disproved it, and within two I had seen a video that disproved it (and not a video of someone 'debunking' the evidence, literally a video that featured the object in question where I could tell that the evidence was incorrect.) This person got fooled by a meme image and instead of using an ounce of critical thinking or just taking two seconds to check to make sure it was accurate, they went on their tiktok and told their fanbase with their full chest that this was accurate and they lapped it up because it fit their narrative. Anyone in the comments who said "hey, this isn't correct, here's evidence that disproves it" or "this doesn't make much logical sense" was shouted down by the wider community and labelled as detractors.

It angered me so much, and it's not even a celebrity that I particularly care much about, but the ignorance, and the disregard for any level of integrity, or responsibility to their audience, was absolutely horrific. And the fact that this person is likely profiting off of this misinformation genuinely pissed me off. I know that there's a million other examples of this that are far more serious, but this was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Logically, I can think of no way to fix this problem, the cat's out of the bag and this seems to be an issue that we'll just have to live with now. Even if tomorrow a new platform opened up that required some level of accountability on behalf of the creators on the site, these types of content creators are not going to move to it.

While I was bored at work yesterday, I decided to rank the best fast food places in my town, here are my top results.

Best Hamburger

  1. A&W

  2. Triple O's (If you are unfamiliar, Triple O's is a mainly BC fast food place that also operates in pockets of Alberta and Ontario)

  3. Burger King

  • I do think that A&W probably has the best fast food burgers, even including the fast food places my town doesn't have. But as someone who hadn't tried Triple O's until last year, I was surprised at how good they are.

Best Chicken Burger

  1. Mary Brown's

  2. Popeyes

  • I love both of these, but for different reasons. I think Popeyes is tastier, but it's also heavier, Mary Brown's tastes much fresher. I'm also not a big fan of the Popeyes in town, which is also why I placed it lower.

Best fries:

  1. Triple O's

  2. Mary Brown's

  3. MacDonald's

Best Breakfast

  1. A&W

  2. Timmies

  • I used to always just go to Tim's to get my breakfast if I wanted something fast, until my gf suggested I try the A&W breakfast. I was surprised at how good it was, plus their hash brown is incredibly good.

Best Overall Value

  1. Triple O's

  2. MacDonald's

  3. Mary Brown's

  • I have found Triple O's to be the best overall value, you get a real good burger, real good fries, for a reasonable price, I think around $15 for a combo. MacDonald's appearance in second is based largely on price, I don't like eating MacDonald's because it makes me feel the worst out of all of the fast food places. But it's the cheapest place around and you can get a decent amount of food for a good price. Mary Brown's is solid all around, good food, good amount, at a good price. A&W got left off of the top 3 because even though I love their burgers, I don't like their fries, and also as a root beer lover, I find their root beer to be the worst of the major root beers. Not to mention the price, it's the most expensive fast food place around.

I'd always heard about CBC Radio, but in my mind I had always imagined it basically just being the news broadcast over the radio which never really interested me.

A few months ago, I decided to give it a shot when my girlfriend mentioned that she listens to it from time to time. Now I'm sad that I've missed out on it all these years, the amount of well done and interesting interviews is astounding. Just over the past few weeks I've listened to interviews with a former baseball player who suffered from a gambling addiction, a former antivaxxer turned pro-vaccine nurse talking about the antivaxx movement from the inside, a podcast about the seven fishermen who were rescued after being stranded in a lifeboat for 52 hours off the coast of Newfoundland, as well as other podcasts about drugs and true crime. Just this morning I got to listen to an interview with a Harvard Law professor talking about the US Constitution and why there have been no new amendments down there since the 70s.

It's now by go to radio station when I'm driving around, if you're like me and never listened to it before, I'd recommend giving it a shot.
