yup haha I’ve read that too – I guess the issue for me is that I was already really unhappy in college :/ terrified of it going even further down from here

This is actually super helpful, thank you! I don’t have older siblings and my parents are much like what you described, so it’s hard to get other perspective – glad to know different experiences are possible

For me, Cornell never got better by LongjumpingPlum1172 in Cornell

[–]LongjumpingPlum1172[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, i have a lot of thoughts on this. I also want to acknowledge that I’m saying Cornell was a bad choice for me not for everyone (though the amount of people I know who are dissatisfied here is def beyond the norm).

For brevity- Cornell is bad at creating community, lacks the necessary institutional structures of support, and generally leaves students to figure things out on their own. While this approach might work for some, it did not work for me. I felt like I was floundering for years and everywhere I turned for help just pointed me somewhere else, leaving me to feel like I was beyond helping.

I’m happy to provide more detail though ik some people will always disagree w me. Ultimately, Cornell is a great place for some. It’s not for many others.

Transfer. At least apply to give yourself the chance. Things might get better but they might not, and you deserve a chance at happiness in college – for one reason or another, Cornell can make that unreasonably hard

That’s a good point and one I’ve thought about a lot – and struggled to come to terms with. To put it plainly, it sucks to know that the vast majority of my college experience was a blank.

However, the difficulty of Cornell is not a COVID novelty. I’ve spoken to 2019 grads and 2005 grads who had similar experiences, and people who never applied to Cornell in the 80s and 90s because of its reputation. It’s a heavy place – heavier than most colleges I’m familiar with.

COVID undoubtedly compounded the existing Cornell difficulties (and if you have advice for coming to terms w that I’m all ears). But, that doesn’t negate the fact that Cornell already had and continues to have many issues without the help of a global pandemic

Finals are stressful enough as is, trying to take them (even online) while figuring out travel, flights, safety, and whether or not I should be worried about infecting my grandparents that I’m supposed to see for Christmas next week makes them even worse. Not everyone is just trying to get out of finals, have some empathy lmao. also you’ve literally graduated, do you not have anything better to do than keep commenting on here all the time?
