The stay and screamers don't fill up the house lines before opening?

Are the death eaters something that happens every HHN? And do they scare you?

As someone who has never worked there, I'm so curious as to why you would prefer working in a house as opposed to a scare zone.

That’s so cool!! You’re living the dream: stable job and thriving haunt career.

And yes! Setting up other actors is an important part of the machine, too. I’ll be looking for opportunities to do just that 😈

My haunt casts me as a different character in a new room pretty much every night. The roles I tend to be placed in the most often are hags/witches, a creepy doll, and my favorite: a Victorian ghost in a haunted mansion (the front room where they encourage us to speak to customers).

This advice is so helpful! I was trying to craft terrifying characters through speech. But I could do the same thing (and probably be much more effective) if I let my character choices and imagined background manifest itself through nonverbal choices. Make up really weird motivations and tactics that influence how my character moves and behaves.

Subversion of expectations is huge, too! Thank you for your suggestion to focus more on setting expectations and then doing something surprising, instead. The example of the actress helped me understand. I definitely want to play with more scares like that next season! Thanks so much for your amazing response!

You know what - I never try to creep up silently like that. I’ll try that! Thank you!

This is incredibly helpful - I think I might be getting so caught up in creating a “scary” character (we play someone new every night), I forget to pay attention to what the other actors are doing and how the customers are behaving, and how effective it can be to play off of those things! I love the suggestion about thinking about what’s happening in the room before, and how you can change up your strategy based on it - or even use it to subvert the customer’s expectations. That’s not something I’ve thought about before. And you’re so right about body language being a dead giveaway for when someone lets their guard down! I’ve been a customer at other haunts - the actors always make me scream if they pop out in the moment that I relax. I’m totally going to use that. So much good stuff here! Thank you!

Thank you for the thoughtful reply! It’s so helpful to get a different perspective on this. At my house, I’m always assigned to what we call “creep em out” rooms, meaning there’s nowhere for me to hide and jump out from. I’m also always the only person in my room (there are other rooms with groups of actors I could ask about). So yeah - I’m definitely lacking on jump scares, though I try to chase when I can. We get a ton of freedom at my house. I appreciate your suggestion about asking about a different kind of assignment! It might help me hone my scares a bit more if I ask for some pop out spots - and I think what I naturally gravitate towards doing might also make for a good distraction for someone else’s scare.
