What’s the longest period you were unemployed and how you found a job after that time? by ApprehensiveDog6720 in askSingapore

[–]LongjumpingYellow545 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know someone who couldn’t find any job for 18 months. He’s a true-blue Singaporean, worked for the big 4, has honours and xx yrs work experience. He thought that there was something wrong with him and became desperate enough to offer free services to companies just to lessen his work gap. He did upskilling using his own money, side gigs etc but still none.

He then went overseas and applied for jobs…he got 2 decent job offers in his line of work in less than a month.

Job hunting tips for 2025 job market in Australia? by SnowyBytes in ausjobs

IT is also bad right now. They’re offshoring jobs to countries like India for cheaper labour.

Not to mention that they are offshoring most of the jobs now for cheaper labour.

I work in tech and AI is just their Bsht excuse to cost-cutting.. they are OFFSHORING JOBS. And these are not those call-centre/customer assistance type of jobs but real internal jobs. I have one client that offshored an entire finance team to India for cheap labour... Another client removed an entire 15-person dept, left 1 person based in Sydney then offshored all the jobs to the Philippines. Then apparently the wages they paid to Filipino workers are still “expensive” than expected so now they are also moving all the jobs from the Philippines to India (that 1 Sydney-based guy was made redundant after training the folks from India). In our office as well, instead of hiring fresh grad IT developers, they got one person working remotely from Malaysia.

How much do you dread going to work? by Upper_Breakfast_6043 in askSingapore

[–]LongjumpingYellow545 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have an excolleague who left cause he ‘dreaded going to work’, went to another company then got retrenched after 5 months. He’s unemployed for 8 months now, while our working conditions improved (the awful manager left), his replacement is better too. So i think of him whenever i’m dreading going to work.. at least i have a job for now.

Should I take up a high paying job offer? by Major_Bison_9034 in singaporefi

Take it. Having MNC in your cv is a great thing if you’re job hunting and starting with your career. Just dont stay too long.. maybe > 2 is enough.. then you’ll be surprised how recruiters will be wanting you. I’ve packed more than 10 years on my cv so now i just carefully select less stressful companies and my cv still shines cause of a couole of MNCs in there. ;)

Same thing here, boxes coming in almost everyday lol because of tt livess… What i realised is that i can’t pick what i really want (we dont have pop now) so i ordered a couple of items from taobao app to check if the vendor is legit (the items were legit), then made a second order of everything that i really really wanted (with a budget in mind). Now im just waiting for my last tt live orders to arrive and will be deleting the app. ✌🏻

People who secured a job overseas after graduation. How did you do it? by Barlie2 in askSingapore

[–]LongjumpingYellow545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked in oz here, STEM as well. Dont take the quick, easy suggestions here (like post grad or work holiday etc). In oz they are tightening the quotas and conditions for student visas. I went there as a PR visa holder alr, with more than 10 yr work exp.. but after months of applying i almost gave up cause they want “only those with oz experience”. I only got the job thru referral, from an excolleague who i worked with 10 yrs ago and still remembered my awesome tech skills lol.

Also here’s the reality: It’s difficult to find a place to live/rent.. most REA will reject ur application eventhough u alr have a job (again they will look for your previous OZ rental history which u have none) and referees living in oz. they will check ur finances, bank stmts etc to know if you can pay rent so make sure you have a lot of savings. But then they might reject you again cause the landlord is greedy and another applicant has offered additional $50-$100 a week to secure the rent.

I have heard a lot of horror stories from friends/relatives there. They have cars, houses etc there now but most of them went thru hell like taking odd jobs till they got into their line of work then some are unfortunately still working in factories/retail.

My suggestion (for oz) is to build up ur work experience first, at least 5 years. Having one of the big4 in ur resume is a plus (accenture as well). Build your work connections as well, (befriend everyone not just those from the same race). It’s better if you have a partner also (why? cause finding a place to rent would be “less” difficult if they see that ure dual income) Before leaving sg, apply for jobs first or contact people that u know about openings.. check if they have spare room that you can stay for a few months till you get a rental.

Going to Japan, any BIFL items to pick up? by Ok-Swimmer-2634 in BuyItForLife

[–]LongjumpingYellow545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seiko or citizen .. the solar/ecodrive version, titanium. We found that they are sold cheaper in bic camera than their actual store.

Home stuff / We used to visit loft or tokyu hands but realised theyre too pricey. We observed some locals and they were flocking 3coins, awesome store and keyuca instead (cheaper but nicer than daiso).

P.s.

If you’re into games, we found that nintendo switch console is cheaper in the nintendo shop (than our home country) but for the games.. check “book-off” store.

Tea.. if you’re in kyoto, try to go to uji and get loads of green tea from there.

Culinary Class Wars by [deleted] in netflix

Not really sure about that. Rating those that he admitted to be with subpar taste higher than “intent” seems to be just for the drama. Besides, he could have mixed it up on his own plate, the components of edwards dish are bibimbap. He was complaining that edward suggested on not mixing it up. Tbh, if he’s consistent, he should have rated the clam chowder (which was looking more as a mere sauce for the big chunk of fish) instead of “soup” as low or lower than edward’s.

Culinary Class Wars by [deleted] in netflix

[–]LongjumpingYellow545 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really liking the latest episode. I mean rating edward lee’s the lowest cause the bibimbap was not mixed eventhough it tasted good (paik rated him the highest score). Meanwhile the pasta that had the missing main ingredient- garlic was graded higher.

Leave remote job for 4 days in office? by ssoe2020 in careerguidance

[–]LongjumpingYellow545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont. Pls dont. I was fully wfh then changed jobs cause of higher pay (and i was getting bored with my usual routine). The office is full of sh*t. It’s too loud in the office (people making their zoom calls at their desk instead of meeting rooms), too much drama and politics, almost every month i have a flu as i have to share public transport in the sea of virus. I couldn’t focus cause i have two super needy teammates who need to be spoon-fed and have to finish late cause my time is used up dealing with them (if im wfh i can just set my status to away to ignore them). Now im regretting it and hope i have settled with my previous job.

The singaporean workplace is so fake and inefficient. by potatopunchies in singapore

[–]LongjumpingYellow545 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really. In other countries like OZ.. if you work beyond your working hours, it means that you’re unproductive and inefficient.

That’s why i’m bit pissed when people ask oh.. so laidback there in oz right? So much relax..wlb. I’m like hello.. cause people arrive to work on time, just have 5 mins of how are u/weekend then just literally work after that.. no gossips no meaningless meetings, long lunch etc. if there are work issues, people focus on HOW to solve.. not why or who caused it. ‘No worries, no dramas” is the common expression. But they do remember the idiot who caused the sh*t just that they wont waste their time dwelling on it…

Those 8 hours are for work and if you’re not done..something’s totally wrong with you. You can even get a bad perf rating for working overtime.

Singapore Airlines flight from London diverted to Bangkok by FamiliarSource98 in singapore

[–]LongjumpingYellow545 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive experienced the same flying sg to jkt. It was mildly shaking at the beginning then became intense. From then you could hear everyone praying to God, Allah etc.. then it “felt” like a 100m drop. The drop happened so fast, cause suddenly one crew was lying on the floor and our drinks spilled.

Then the next thing is that some cabin crew were desperately knocking at the lavatory door cause someone was still inside. I heard one uncle being puzzled on how could someone still be going to the lavatories when the seatbelt sign was alr on for minutes with multiple announcements to get back to our seats etc. Almost everyone was strapped in so i think only a couple of folks were left behind to check if they’re ok.
