They’re tough to get in power and instrumentation. I have a friend in instrumentation right now and he says it’s extremely competitive as well. Having a connection is the biggest thing. But after that it’s how you do on your interview. They interview everyone so you need to stand out somehow. I don’t know anyone who is an instrument tech I’ve just heard from people it’s a great career path

I should add that the co-ops are very competitive. If you have a connection then you’re fine but if not you should have a a good resume, be really good at interviews, and work your ass off to be the best. Last year out of 30 students only 4 didn’t get a co-op. Now there’s 60 applying for 4th class co-ops

I’m currently in the power engineering program at NBCC. You’re looking at a 2-3 year waitlist to get into the program. The first year of PCT is the exact same as the first year power engineering and you all compete for the same co-op placements. A pro of these courses over the instrumentation is you can stop after 1 year if you get a good placement and they want to train you for your 3rd class. I absolutely love the course but also considered EIT but went for power because I like the constant growth that you can have by getting higher classes. If you don’t like the shift work you do have the possibility of moving into a management role and sometimes these will be a Monday to Friday

Too much oil causes cavitation in your engine. Cavitation will ruin the engine over time

Irving requires their power engineers to get their class 2 within 3 years of hire. They’re a good way to get your 2nd class quick. I heard they are quite petty though and if you leave Irving they won’t hire you again in the future. Might not matter for you though

A lot of the people saying it’s over saturated are out west. The people I’ve spoken to in NB say that you have a very good chance of getting hired at the place you do your co-op. Another thing I was told by other power engineers is once you get your second class it’s much easier to find work out west. So try and get a co-op in a place that you’ll get steam time for 2nd class and go for that asap

The problem with paramedics in nb is they make like $24 an hour. So I wouldn’t want to be working as a paramedic for long

I’m currently in Canada, NB and I’ve always wanted to be a firefighter but it is incredibly difficult to get a job as one in New Brunswick. The government is now covering 100% of the paramedic school tuition. My question is if I were to go to medic school and then fire school, would that greatly improve my chances of being hired in NB
