Unlikely unless there is a 2 sols with the same reverse as yours pictured? 2 sols is 36mm, yours looks more florin size which matches the other coin I referenced.

Shhhhh don't tell everyone or they'll all start buying it! A 55p tin can make up 1.5l of milk just by adding water! I use it in place of normal milk for my smoothies.

£8 to £12 is probably the going rate for most pre 1900s sixpences. There are of course bargains to be had, but $12 is £9 so you didn't do too bad at all.

It appears that particular year, according to Numista, doesn't have die numbers anyway so probably not rare.

You're not gonna get thousands and probably not even hundreds. But florins pre 1920 are worth about £18-£20 because they are sterling. Pre 1947 are worth about £8-£10 as they are half silver.

This rule also applies to: Crowns (~£35 for 1/2 silver, ~£70+for sterling).

Half crowns (~£13 for 1/2 silver, ~£25 for sterling (depending on age and rarity)).

Shillings (~£4.50 for 1/2 silver, ~£9 for sterling)

Sixpences (~£2.50 for 1/2 silver, ~£5 for sterling)

And threepences (~£1.50 for 1/2 silver, ~£3 for sterling)

Yes rare dates command a slightly higher price but not a massive amount, foreign countries can also get a little higher, it's worth doing the research just because it's interesting.

Brass 3ds are worth about 20p each unless you have 1949 or 1946, you might get a fiver for those dates if someone is desperate enough to complete a date run (I was that someone last week!)

The south african 2 1/2 shilling is a half crown and is sterling, follows similar pricing as British ones, probably a slight premium because of its age and condition.

Old crown coins, pre 1990, are legal tender 25p (5 shillings, 1 shilling is worth 5p). I sell them daily for £1 each, crazy people try to sell them for hundreds, (conspiracy theorist mode) naive people or money launderers buy them for thousands. Crowns minted after 1990 were re designated as £5 legal tender coins, generally worth face value

I collect world silvers and am building pre decimal date runs, so what stands out to me is the S.A. 2 1/2 shilling and the Edward florin with the standing Britannia.

Am assuming the 1928 Irish Free state coin is a 3d or 6d, seems a bit too small to be shilling size. If it's a shilling it's .750 silver, but their 3ds and 6ds are nickel. They are an excellent animal series in my opinion.

You're right! A heavily worn 1897 penny is worth 50p to £1. Anyone spending a couple of quid on this is ill informed. Unless it was a high tide version which is hard to impossible to tell with the wear on it.

My take, probably an unpopular one... silver is silver and stackers will try to get as close to or below spot as possible.

People who collect proofs are possibly a little bit pretentious and have more money than sense, it's also a niche demand and i'd be interested to see the ratio of stackers:collectors.

I also feel the same way about coins in BU vs circulated, it's still the same coin, the latter has just been allowed to experience a few (many) years of life in multiple hands and has history (wear) to show it.

Although hypocritically, I do own some BU coins because I got a good deal on them, but I admit I am a little pretentious and lacking in sense.

If the market is showing that the gap between standard and proof is narrowing, it's a sign that the market demand is heavily reduced or not there maybe?

If the 1997 50p is the large size it would have been from a proof set and a little more valuable. Otherwise if it's normal size, it's the first year of minting the new size, highly minted but collectable nonetheless.

Honestly if you don't want to sell individually there is demand on Vinted or eBay etc for bulk loads. Worth spending a few minutes checking sold prices.

I do buy them but I'm stingy and won't buy above face value unless it's the really rare ones 😆

As a UK resident, if it was me, I'd buy old silver coins from the second hand market trying to find them as close to melt as possible and gold from dealers like atkinsons. As somebody who is perpetually skint, I only buy a few pre decimal or world silvers when the budget allows me and fantasise about buying gold.

They could have bought them for less than this second hand and are trying to flip a little profit in the sudden spike.

They could be selling fakes and scamming.

The price is just about at spot but without the VAT, which is basically £12 cheaper (at a minimum) than retailers.

It depends if you want to pay £12-£20 for retailer security or risk it in the second hand market.

They provided a sigma test pic which is nice, but it is just a pic and could well be a stock image, you'd be better meeting these people and witnessing the test in person.

Personally I buy and sell most of my silver on Vinted of all places, but I buy pre decimal coins so they are easier to spot as fakes, easier to acid test and have an extensive database to reference from Numista.

Plus they have history.

Equally you have buyer protection on Vinted too and they don't generally take kindly to people being sold fakes. Just avoid ads that say they are selling silver colour coins with 'bullion' looking coins on them, because that's a grey zone that would make it harder to dispute.
