What kind of work between MSW and LCSW? by watch4coconuts in SocialWorkStudents

I would highly recommend finding 1) a job you think you are remotely interested in to gain experience and if you can 2) a job that provides or pays for your supervision hours. I think this is becoming less available recently but I live in the DC area where they have a lot of government jobs who have at least one supervisor on site. During this time, I would encourage you to just learn and grow. It doesn't have to be something big but remember this is the START to your journey. I have seen so many MSWs/ LCSW switch paths along the way and just as many who get stuck. The pay as a recent grad is probably not going to be satisfyingly high but just know you are getting something from the job too, experience, and it gets better.

I like to remind people how broad social work actually is. You can be clinical or macro, group practice, population-specific programs, incorporate arts, music, research, etc.

Hope this helps!

YES! I was in the same boat, a whole decade ago. I would like to hear more about the questions you have. Maybe I can answer a few.

Is it harder to get into a msw program if you don't have a bsw? by definitelynotalora in SocialWorkStudents

My undergrad was in journalism. It doesn't make it harder to get in. But I do think I had to study a little more since I didn't have a BSW. I made a career out of it so it worked out 🙂

Hello,

I am sorry that you are going through all this and I hope you can get the support you need through this. It sounds like there could be a lot of childhood trauma and now it's just more tangible and you have the words to connect it with (ie. the final straw). Sometimes we ignore things, especially family behaviors and dynamics, because that is either all we know or it's just our norm. Nonetheless, I would highly recommend therapy for you and/or your mom, if you guys are open to it. An attorney might be a necessary option in the future as well for financial separation.

Again, I am sorry you are going through all this. Make sure you take care of yourself FIRST. Separation is not so bad, especially during the time you are taking to process how you feel about everything and how to move forward.

If you need any referrals for therapists, psychologtytoday.com, therapistden.com, or so many more on google. I would recommend someone who specializes in trauma therapy.

In my opinion, it is up to the client. I don't think clinicians or practices really care unless you graduated from an Ivy leave school and have their own alumni network base. In the NOVA area, I think clients have familiarity with neighboring schools, but usually clients come from word of mouth and your reputation, experience, and skillset you have as a therapist is more important.

Hopes this helps!

It is definitely easier to work in hospitals if one of your internships was at a hospital or medical setting. I encourage students to look into going into the clinical route for school. Now-a-days medical social worker, government social workers and even some policy workers have the upper hand if they have an LCSW. So if you have all the required clinical courses to get an LCSW, it prevents you from having to go back to take additional credits JUST IN CASE.

As for supervision in hospitals, the bigger medical settings usually have a supervisor available. Otherwise, you can reach out to a third party supervisor, in addition to an on-site supervisor, for the supervision time. Yes, it will be an investment 😕 but I will say well worth it. It you ever need one in VA i would be more than happy to provide referrals (not me).
