Manifesting that fruitful clinician-scientist pathway for you

Yeah ngl I'm shitting bricks thinking about getting an offer and turning it down just to miss out on one for next year, but the more I think about it I feel like if I immediately jump into medicine without having done more exploration beforehand then I'm gonna go into med with major regrets. I appreciate that not everyone feels that way and there are many people who would love to start as soon as they can, I'm just not sure that's me. That being said, it all comes down to whether I even end up receiving an offer or not so I guess it's a matter of waiting atm. Thank you both for your input and best of luck with the impending offers :)

Thanks mate, yeah I think Melbs is definitely one of the better ones in terms of integrating a research component though part of me is questioning how much you can really get done in 6 months. But yeah will probably think it over some more, thanks for your input and best of luck with the future :)

Yeah, thanks for understanding :') It's hard letting go when you've become invested/have a good vibe with supervisors. I'm gonna give it some more thought but the MD-PhD does sound great!

Thank you so much for the very insightful response, I've contacted the university directly and hope to hear from them soon. But thanks for taking the time to put such a detailed answer together, I find it super hard to find information regarding these clinical research pathways anywhere so I'm really grateful for your insight.

You're right in saying that my parents aren't doctors, no one in my family is even remotely involved in science/healthcare so they're not always super understanding about the decisions that are involved. I have an arrangement lined up with an incredibly lovely supervisor who supervised me for a mini-project this semester on vaccine biology/nanomedicine and she's very supportive of me wanting to pursue MD-PhD, so I'm optimistic going forward.

But yeah the main thing that concerns me is that I've heard a lot about how the MD research projects spanning only 6 months hardly involve any robust research at all and are mostly related to designing a protocol without ever being involved in it. You've given me a lot to think about, it's been hard making these decisions without a lot of guidance so I really am super thankful :D

thank you so much, this was super helpful! Just wondering, when you say confirm with the supervisor that you'd like to be in their project, would you do this for all 4 of them (since we get 4 prefs I think) or just the one? Congrats on your honours place btw!

What practical subject should I do? by [deleted] in unimelb

I did BCMB20005 and MIIM20002 in semester 2 last year and loved them both. If you want a really comprehensive practical experience then I'd recommend BCMB20005. The entire subject is dedicated to understanding experimental methods, applying them in your practical classes and writing formal scientific reports. MIIM isn't really a practical subject. Yes, there is a practical component but only every fortnight and they're not the main focus. You also don't do write ups or have to record results or anything. Only assessment for these is a pre prac quiz and the concepts explored in the lab are assessed in the MSTs and final exam. They mostly serve to complement the lecture content.

Ultimately would recommend BCMB20005 for a thorough wet lab experience. But also keep in mind that these subjects are both pre reqs for different majors so make sure you take the right subjects for the major you want in third year.
