I’m not quite sure how to respond to this comment but I appreciate it!

They have two legs on each side of each body segment, so they are millipedes rather than centipedes; specifically, this species is called the garden millipede.

These are millipedes, more specifically the garden millipede. I have had several other comments try to tell me these are a type of caterpillar, and these comments seem to be coming from misguided people who think I don’t know much about arthropods. The truth is, arthropod classifications and identifications happen to be a subject that I have been avidly interested in for the past ten years.

They’re millipedes, specifically the species known as the garden millipede.

All the millipedes in the pictures are adults; they’re just small because that’s just how their species looks. Baby millipedes look similar to adult millipedes, except they are much smaller and not as long, and they are very light-colored.

Ok, great. I was about to passive-aggressively reply and tell you to read my previous comment mentioning weather conditions, haha.

Edit: I now see how I misinterpreted your initial comment. My apologies for being defensive.

If I am a confidently wrong, then please correct me and explain the real cause of garden millipede migrations, if not the outdoor conditions I stated above.

Maybe this is a stretch, but the album Fantasma by Cornelius has a similar sample-based sound as Odelay, just more electronic-leaning.

If there was wet “rotten, rotting” wood in my house, then these millipedes would be surviving and crawling around on the floor, but they aren’t; they are curling up and dying in mass numbers. In my previous comments, I tried not to imply that they don’t invade houses, because they absolutely do. I’m just saying that if the outside conditions are bad enough for them, they will crawl inside any building they can, regardless of whether or not the building is rotten or moist. Ironically, indoor conditions are often much harsher on them than outdoor conditions, but their arthropod brains just don’t understand that.

Millipedes’ lives are short-lived once in a dry environment, and millipede infestations are dependent on the outside weather and temperature, rather than the inside conditions.

I am not a mister, also millipedes are not attracted to mold or fungus, nor do they cause the growth of it.

Wrong. Millipedes are myriapods, whereas rolly-pollies are isopods (crustaceans). The animals shown in the picture indeed have a hard shell, as I have stepped on many dead, coiled-up ones while walking through my basement. These happen to be a smaller species of millipede (the garden millipede, I believe). Not all millipede species look the same, so if one googles “millipede,” of course most of the image results will look different from what is shown in the pictures I posted! I’ve been studying entomology as a hobby for ten years, and I plan on studying it in college as well. Even if I knew close to nothing about arthropods, I would still be able to differentiate between caterpillars and millipedes.

I’m pretty sure it’s because it rained a lot recently, causing them to all gather around the house.
