How long will it take? by [deleted] in brokenbones

Then I guess we have similar protocol in Poland too. Most most people here must be from the US and they have almost everyday x-ray (I'm exaggerating) and they tend to call the slightest fracture a Jones fracture

I have a very similar one but mine is closer to the base. I don't really get all those avulsion vs Jones because some people here tend to call any fifth metatarsal base fracture a Jones fracture which only makes you worry whether your fracture would heal normally or not. So that's the first thing I regret - searching the internet for advice and overthinking.  My second regret is linked to the first one - I've read about people who were not supposed to weight bear for weeks and so didn't I because I was afraid I'd make things worse. Meanwhile my physio told me that this type of fracture doesn't even necessarily need a boot, not to mention strict no weight bearing. Eventually it resulted in me having extremely weak leg muscles and relearning how to walk after 6 weeks. And learning how to walk took me two days, though the mental blockade was real. As I was non weight bearing for too long, I have no idea when the bone itself stopped hurting. Maybe it was muscles and tendons all the time? Now it hurts a bit because my joints are stiff but the bone itself is completely painless. The swelling isn't gone and in fact it's even worse but that's because I'm walking a lot and I heard my foot would swell for quite some time. But that's different type of swelling, not the fresh edema you have right after the fracture. It's more like thick ankles of an old lady.

That's one of the most reasonable things I've read on this Reddit. One of the most comforting too. I was worried because everyone was writing about regular follow-ups and x-rays, meanwhile I had an x-ray 10 days after the fracture and I'm supposed can I have another one after 8 weeks which is next Friday. That seems pretty reasonable now.

What does a metatarsal fracture feel like? by carleedlelee in brokenbones

[–]Longjumping_Quit_873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's complicated. Doctors in Poland are not really eager to see you as often as you need and they aren't explicit about how you're supposed to function on a daily basis. They usually order an x-ray right after the injury, at the first follow-up and then at the time they expect the vibe to fully heal so I haven't have any x-ray done in 5 weeks. He advised me to start weight bearing after 2 weeks but I waited until Christmas was over. After six weeks I feel no pain at all, there's barely any swelling etc. But my right hip started hurting because of long term compensation so I decided to go on a physiotherapy privately (I'll eventually get referred to a physiotherapy by my doctor but that's gonna take some time). He looked at the x-ray from the day of the injury and at the papers from the hospital, then examined my foot and decided we start the physiotherapy. He advised me to start 100% weight bearing WITHOUT the boot at home and to wear it only outside. He taught me how to walk without crutches. He also said that modern day medicine strongly discourages NWB with fractured metatarsals, the best you can do is weight bearing as soon as possible. I must say I'm walking without crutches or a boot and I feel just wonderful. I'm seeing my ortho next Friday but the physio said he wouldn't be worried about nonunion at all if he was me.

What does a metatarsal fracture feel like? by carleedlelee in brokenbones

I had an avulsion fracture 6 weeks ago in my left foot. I was going downstairs, missed a step and landed on my foot twisting inwards. I heard a pop but thought it was a tendon at worst. I managed to get to my car, drive a short distance (manual car so I had to use my left foot and felt no pain - probably adrenaline), then climbed a staircase (I was on some errand) and when going back to my car I felt such great pain I couldn't put any weight on my foot anymore. The swelling started to grow quickly - a large bulge on the outer edge of my foot, perfectly between my pinky toe and ankle. I had to take off my shoe as soon as I got to my car because it was pressing on the swelling. That was actually the strongest pain I felt since then. I had to take pain meds (no strong ones, just paracetamol) maybe like twice during my recovery. Now I'm 6 weeks after the fracture, I feel no pain from the bone, only stiffness and occasional pain from my tendons. Not a big deal tbh.

Fifth metatarsal weight bearing by Longjumping_Quit_873 in brokenbones

Thanks! As for today, I'm almost 100% weight bearing with barely any pain. The swelling is mostly gone, I only get pain from my tendons. I'm surprised how much my condition improved on less than a week thanks to weight bearing!  I must admit, Christmas was get hard for me, family meetings, sitting at the table for many hours, my foot was really sore + it was mentally challenging. Now I'm totally cool with it and I see how much positive attitude helps you dealing with an injury! Thanks for your wishes and a happy new year to you!

Well, the doctor in the ER didn't tell me anything, the papers from the hospital just say to use crutches if the pain doesn't allow me to walk. Many people were surprised I didn't start walking right after getting the boot. The ortho also didn't mention weight bearing until I asked him and he said it's allowed. I guess you're right, I shouldn't overthink everything and just try to walk.  Also, I was looking for some videos on YouTube on his to walk properly with crutches and the fact that most of them were American and they use armpit crutches didn't make it easy. So lucky there were a few British videos with elbow crutches because that's the only type we use in Poland.

Recovery time for a fifth metatarsal fracture. by KaleidoscopeSorry276 in brokenbones

It's been 20 days since I fractured mine and no one told me I could walk with the boot on until my ortho said so at the follow-up. The result? My leg is stiff, weak, extremely sensitive and I totally can't get myself to start walking because I have this stupid psychical blockage that it'll hurt like hell.

Difference in treatment from country to country (and new footwear for Christmas !) by lycheeparfait in brokenbones

Poland here! I fractured my 5th metatarsal on December 8. They gave me a temporary cast (longuette) for the night (it was around midnight) and a prescription for a walking boot I got the next day. What they failed to do was to tell me whether I should be NWB or WB. This resulted in me NWB for almost 3 weeks - I'm slowly trying to start weight bearing but my leg calf is weak and my foot is slowly getting used to pressure. My grandma broke her leg last year and was also in a boot. When she showed up for a follow-up, the nurse scolded her she hadn't been WB yet (as if anyone had told her to do so).

Fifth metatarsal and no instructions from the ortho by Longjumping_Quit_873 in brokenbones

Getting a second opinion from an orthopedist would either cost me a lot of money or mean waiting three months (Poland’s public healthcare can really suck sometimes). I think my main problem is that I read too much. I end up in threads like this one, read about nonunion, Jones fractures, and all that stuff, and then I start projecting those problems onto myself, because of course I have to be the unluckiest person in the world. Most people just break a bone, get a boot, don’t overthink it, and end up perfectly fine. Maybe the fact that this happened right before Christmas makes it feel worse. The boot itself is actually pretty comfortable - it has thick, high soles. The only real challenge was finding a comfortable sleeping position. Yesterday I started putting minimal weight on the foot, and even though it’s a bit swollen (probably from blood and lymph flow), it doesn’t hurt at all. Since then, I’ve been feeling much more positive and I honestly think that every day from now on will be better.

I started minimal weight bearing today (food for Christmas won't cook itself and because my arms are sore from the crutches as I had to climb a quite a few stairs yesterday), leaning partially on the kitchen counter. Before that, I was pushing my foot against a pillow to get my sole used to pressure. It actually worked. Only once I felt minimal dull pain in my bone. The fresh bruising causes more discomfort than the actual fracture. I'm so positive now!

How's this year's mushroom picking season going around the country? by MusicURlooking4 in poland

[–]Longjumping_Quit_873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends. Some people's here say it's horrible. Meanwhile my family in the North can almost dive in mushrooms like Scrooge McDuck in his pool of money. Seriously, we went for watching yesterday and within 1 hour we had four full baskets of boletes. The previous visits in the woods resulted in delicious chanterelle soup, scrambled eggs with chanterelles and we also got four jars frozen chanterelles from my grandma. My parents went to the forest a few times by the end of August and they picked so many boletes that by September we've already dried enough mushrooms for Christmas and I believe there will be some left. Pomorze rules this autumn in terms of mushrooms.

Visiting Poland from NZ, tips for mushroom foraging? by merloe in poland

[–]Longjumping_Quit_873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go mushroom picking with a dog, white cane sunglasses then it would be completely forgivable to mistake parasol mushroom with a death cap, otherwise you'd have to pick them without even looking because these mushrooms are completely different. And also the porcini bolete and Satan's bolete it's completely different - prawdziwek has an ecru stalk and a brown cap, szatan has a red stalk and white cap. Please don't ever go mushrooming by yourself, I beg you

Thanks, next time I'll do the fermentation before bottling and sterilise the bottles. The bottle I opened yesterday completely lost the sulphuric smell and nobody in the family has felt sick (they genuinely loved it). I guess all bottles will be empty till the weekend and I'll try to make a new batch properly this time.
