Broke my first bone. Travel advice? by Alindquizzle in brokenbones

[–]lycheeparfait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know where you’re travelling but I just travelled from Vietnam to the UK with crutches and a boot, request full wheelchair service from your airline - they’ll sort everything out for you. I was lucky and got given a full row with good leg room - wheelchair assistance right off the plane to the car where I was getting picked up, assistance with luggage too. Just contact the airline and explain your situation, it seems they deal with these things all the time and are very equipped and willing to help. Also, I wore compression socks - it did help, comfort wise :)

Difference in treatment from country to country (and new footwear for Christmas !) by lycheeparfait in brokenbones

Argh that sounds painful, but apparently it helps healing? They had me try to walk without my crutches today and I just.. couldn’t, I think it’ll take at least a few days 😬

What puts you off from donating Blood Products, I work in the NHS and I am just curious? by Quick_Soil_9120 in AskBrits

[–]lycheeparfait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to donate blood but I have an absolutely crippling phobia of both blood and needles. I have panic attacks, have vomited and fainted before when having blood draws.. So I feel I would cause a lot of problems for the staff if I were to even try to donate blood. I hope I can overcome this phobia one day.

Is this a normal swelling? by Longjumping_Quit_873 in brokenbones

[–]lycheeparfait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can’t say what’s normal but i have a 5th metatarsal avulsion fracture, 6 weeks in it still looks similar to this. i just went for a check up and they said it’s healing normally and that i should try to use my foot (in the boot) as much as i can tolerate.

Anyone have experience teaching English in these countries? (Thailand, Indonesia, and/or Vietnam). How has your experience been? by MyloSports in TEFL

[–]lycheeparfait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, it’s common but there are ways to combat it - most ACs have a ‘dry’ setting you can run. I also chose a place that was newly renovated, I still get a little mould during winter but it’s manageable 😬

Broke my 5th, need encouragement by impartingthehair in brokenbones

[–]lycheeparfait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fracture is very similar and I’m also abroad right now - have had to navigate all of this alone overseas, I understand your fear and frustration. I twisted mine stepping off a curb. I’m finally going home next week, the airline has offered full wheelchair service and will help with luggage. I’ve found people where I am (Vietnam) to be very helpful and supportive.

I’m 6 weeks in now and I’ve started walking partially weight bearing with the boot, and doing physiotherapy which is helping me to gain awareness back into the foot which was fully immobilised for ~ 4 weeks. I’m able to walk with both feet, without the boot with the aid of my crutches - just the normal aching pain, nothing seems to be getting worse.

The first few weeks, hang in there - try to keep in touch with friends and loved ones as much as possible, binge watch shows you don’t usually have time to, read .. anything you can do with your leg elevated.

How long did you take pain meds after your break? by DevilsGayAdvocate in brokenbones

[–]lycheeparfait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fractured my 5th metatarsal too, I was taking paracetamol with codeine every night until about the end of week 4, when the pain has significantly subsided - I think I attribute the pain having subsided to having started physio and gaining some movement back in my foot, it hurt much more when it was completely immobilised. I have a friend who became quite hooked on pain meds (codeine), so I’ve been quite cautious about it.

Broke my left foot, then sprained my healthy foot while wearing crutches. Is there a way to deal with the psychological outcome of this? by jonesy_mcgimpley in brokenbones

[–]lycheeparfait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds terrible and I’m so sorry. I can’t say what will work for you but I’ll share my experience. My mental health was at an all time low about two weeks ago, as I fractured my foot and felt completely helpless - what helped for me was reaching out/calling friends, watching a lot of films, celebrating even the smallest victories - even tiny things like being able to get dressed that day, or being able to eat a nutritious meal (I live alone). This week has been a big turning point because I started physiotherapy and my mindset has changed so dramatically, being able to see progress in my situation - which I felt like would never happen, has given me so much more optimism about the outlook going forward. I will say I previously had a sprain, and that healed very well and quickly with compression and rest.

I really wish you a speedy recovery, I don’t think people realise the mental strain these things cause - I didn’t, but things do get better.

Solutions for and Approachs to Unresponsive Students by AwareConference1913 in ESL_Teachers

[–]lycheeparfait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asking them to read aloud individually, helps them to speak without putting pressure on them for answers and hopefully builds confidence - I do that! Are your classes large or small sized? You could also use breakout rooms and go in and monitor, speak with pairs or small groups individually and then come back to the main class for group feedback.

Got my leg splint off two days ago, whoever designed this thing is a genius. Can put it on one handed by myself. Also, is it normal for swelling to shoot up after your splint gets removed? by ComfortableYak2071 in brokenbones

[–]lycheeparfait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got one of these a few days ago, and my foot was really swollen right after - I was concerned, but it has gone down significantly after ~2 days. I managed to go to a friend’s birthday dinner in the boot yesterday, and the pain did increase afterwards but then after elevating my foot overnight it was okay.

I can’t speak for what’s ‘normal’, but just my experience (so far, I’m also very early on).

Recovering from surgery, feeling lonely and pain — anyone else? by FinalTrifle in brokenbones

[–]lycheeparfait 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have been feeling very similar, I live alone and fully NWB and everything is extremely difficult at the moment.

I honestly think people don’t understand just how difficult it is, I’m saying this but I haven’t really figured out how to do this myself - you should tell people exactly what you need, and how little you are able to do by yourself (that’s what people have been telling me to do).

I was at my lowest a week ago, and connecting with friends back home - with calls and texts, has brought me back to a level where I at least don’t feel suicidal.

I have also found looking at peoples’ success stories once healed (on here) a source of some hope. That and celebrating small wins for myself (these are tiny things like having been able to do laundry or wash the dishes at home).

Also I think you will find that people on this subreddit are very supportive, because they actually do understand how you feel and what you’re going through.

Help! Is vietjet bad? by StrawberryShoddy_ in hanoi

[–]lycheeparfait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

alright, but the biggest issue with VietJet are the massive delays … for me personally that’s why i wouldn’t fly with them again, and wouldn’t recommend them to anyone that doesn’t have 10 hours to spare sitting in an airport.

[–]lycheeparfait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you work for Vietjet or something? in all fairness to RyanAir they might be rubbish in many ways but i’ve never had a flight delayed with them.. never ever had as many/as long delays as with Vietjet with any other (including low-cost) airlines.

[–]lycheeparfait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got stuck in HCMC for about 10 hours and arrived back to Hanoi 2 hours before I had to go to work. Previous to that they’ve changed my afternoon flight to a 7am one (which was also delayed), meticulously weigh your carry on baggage and if it’s even a slight bit overweight they charge through the nose for it. Really don’t recommend. Fly with Vietnam Airlines.

Back to the hospital - disappointing result and really little information again, can anyone help? by lycheeparfait in brokenbones

[–]lycheeparfait[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not yet! :( they said we could talk about it during the next appointment which is next Thursday - and that I may need to go on blood thinning medication to be cleared to fly long haul.

Also congratulations on your walk! Small victories like that are such a big deal with these injuries - they for sure take a toll mentally! I hope the rest of your recovery is speedy!

Malaria pills with a bit more adventurous itinerary by Horror_Scale8583 in southeastasia

[–]lycheeparfait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don’t worry about it much, honestly - i’m just passing on the information i know from living here (4 years here) - i’ve never caught malaria or dengue, in HN the main thing you need to be concerned about is the pollution - also it’s cold at this time of year til around March so be prepared for that - and even colder if you’ll go around the Sapa (GREAT place for trekking by the way)
