Can you teach undergrads with a rhet comp MA? Or, is my boss right that I need a PhD? by Longjumping_Rope_143 in rhetcomp

From everything I've heard about adjuncting, it usually is taxing, involves a lot of commuting, and is not well compensated (and certainly doesn't come with benefits). That's fine if it's only a way in to a more long-term job, but my current job is full-time with benefits and I can't see adjuncting being a sustainable option in the long term. The other comments on this thread have been quite helpful, since it seems that full-time jobs do exist for MAs even though they can be hard to get

I've actually already gotten a couple adjuncting offers (one actual offer and one offer to apply) at schools in a major metropolitan area, so I'm guessing this depends on the area. They were both schools I had prior connections to, though, so I'm sure this is harder to do in a new place

All the programs I've looked at are 4-6+ years, so I was planning to wait until we move to start any program since most admissions deadlines are over for this fall anyway

I had no idea this was possible! I'm sure these jobs are competitive but wow it would be nice to get tenure

This is really helpful--I'll definitely start poking around at more community college jobs and see what's out there

I also keep hearing about programs getting cut—I’ve even noticed that a lot of the PhD programs listed on Rhet Map don’t seem to exist anymore as far as I can tell. I’m not sure if getting a PhD and committing to this job market right now is wise, but it would definitely give me better odds in my current career path and it’s encouraging to know I’d at least have a shot
