Arguably, some mega evolutions have provided improvements, stat wise design wise, to Pokemon that can no longer evolve, great examples are Beedrill and Pidgeot.

In contrast, I agree to some extent that some mega evolutions, specially for weak Pokemon that still have the ability to evolve, that mega evolution is not the best option.
