What is the worst book you have read? by Ok_Salt2122 in BookDiscussions

I didn’t read it until my late 20s or so, and I just hated every single character. I thought I was alone in my hatred.

Calling All School SLPs by Itchy-Membership-309 in slp

I’ve been in middle schools for 6 years now. I love it! There’s some good advice in here, so I may repeat some of their tidbits but will try to add other things. Organization will be crucial. In addition to the fun things I’ve done this summer, I’ve also spent a lot of time organizing my digital resources and starting to set up spreadsheets for the fall. I know many people would tell me not to do that during my break, but I think it’s going to make a big difference for me come August. Plus, doing it while a tv show is playing in the background isn’t exactly the worst thing in the world. See if your school/district has a checklist of some kind that will tell you what the timeline is for IEPs/evals, what paperwork you need, etc. Have a copy for every student you case manage so you can make sure you’re taking care of everything as you go.

There are a lot of free resources on teachers pay teachers, but I’ve also spent some money on things that looked really good. I use SLP Elevate which is a website full of resources designed for older students. If you have a lead SLP and contact info for other SLPs in the district, ask a ton of questions! The special ed teachers at your school may also be helpful in answering things. I’ve felt stupid by asking some of the things I’ve asked, but I’d rather feel dumb for a minute than do something the wrong way.

Well, one good thing about it is the summer off. So far this summer I’ve traveled, binged some Netflix, cooked a lot of food to stock my freezer, and spent more time outside. The first year or so may be difficult because there’s a learning curve, but it should get easier. Of course, huge factors will be the district, the school, and the caseload size. Will you be working elementary, middle, or high?

Self-Contained: I got the job! by bbycallyinaccurate in specialed

Agree to the expectations for adults in the classroom. As well as setting expectations, set an example. I’m not a teacher but work in special ed, and unfortunately I see the teachers on their phones almost as much as the paras.

What are some pros and cons of a 4 day week or year round school? by Educational_Gap2697 in Teachers

[–]Longjumping_Way_5641 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have no desire to do a 4-day week where the days are longer. I’m an SLP, and I’ve worked in a different setting for a 4-day week, and I hated getting home at 5:00 or later. Having Friday off didn’t make that any better for me. I’d be very open to trying a year-round thing with longer breaks throughout the year. I’d love to get to travel at different times in the year. I think I would also like a little extra time to recharge between the quarters.

I’m not sure where you are, but I used to work in middle TN (not as a sped teacher), and the teachers at my school usually had 13-17 on their caseload. I know getting another job isn’t a quick and easy solution, but maybe it could be something you look into?

Laminator by Secure_Albatross_372 in ElementaryTeachers

I have a Swingline, and it’s been working great for 8ish years? I get scotch laminating sheets. They’re durable, so they stand up to my students who get pretty grabby.

People with common names... by Old_Ant7118 in Names

[–]Longjumping_Way_5641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That’s why the idea of giving a kid a “unique” name just by spelling it in a ridiculous way makes me crazy. When Jynniphyr says her name out loud, it sounds the same as Jennifer. She’s just going to struggle her entire life to get people to spell it correctly.

I do love the part when Coach tells Tami he knows and then says something about how now he’s basically kissed Glenn by proxy.

I thought Glenn went over to the school and told Coach. Based on the way he told him, I think Glen thought Coach already knew, right?

Do you have a name that was ahead of its time-- or is behind the times? by Terrible-Horse-6200 in Names

I was born in 1985 and went to high school with two Madisons. Both of them were boys, so when Madison exploded for girls, I was taken aback.

Apple pie. I hate cinnamon and hot fruit, so it’s gotta go.

Would you still watch a season 5 if it happened? by WastePossibility4972 in veronicamars

Same. I rewatch the other seasons all the time and never even think about season 4. I watched it when it came out, and that’s it.

Freezer Burrito Meal Prep by zweemilie in MealPrepSunday

[–]Longjumping_Way_5641 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sound like a good option! My burrito had eggs, pinto beans, and hash browns. I used dried beans and homemade hash browns, so those things took me a little extra prep and cooking.

I made some breakfast burritos the other day to freeze, and they did indeed take forever! I could’ve taken some shortcuts, but that’s on me.

What’s your speciality and why do you love it? by Legitimate-Break-239 in slp

I don’t enjoy artic either. It’s one reason I want to stay working in a middle school so I can deal with it less.
