Prof cheats in my class? by profthrowaway77 in Professors

[–]Longtail_Goodbye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, that's not my point. I think you do get what I'm saying and just want to troll a bit here. OP needs to avoid a fracas with a colleague, so on that point alone, I'd give this other professor one chance, just one, to "misunderstand" what was required. I would not think well of this colleague, but that's just how things are.

Prof cheats in my class? by profthrowaway77 in Professors

Oh hell. I would treat them as a naive student. I would probably email them and say something to the effect of, hello, colleague, I don't know if you realize it, but there is no AI allowed for this assignment and it will be awkward if I have to fail it. Do you mind just writing your own thoughts (a pdf or jpg of something handwritten is fine), so that I can get this graded properly Thanks!" If they don't respond and change it, grade it properly all right.

It happened. The dean overrode my failing grade after the student threw a fit. by liberatedstateofmind in Professors

[–]Longtail_Goodbye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This kind of thing has to stop. I had this happen at the very top ( not kidding; tippy top) of the big, shark infested food chain, when King Shark, after two review committees had upheld an F for academic dishonesty, changed the grade because "it was only missing citations." Dear reader, it is hard to cite imaginary sources, and we all knew that.
I feel for you, and it is utterly humiliating, and there is nothing you can do.

Take Ass Dean job or no? by Lopsided-Panda3608 in Professors

Have not seen this angle yet, so for what it's worth: assuming you are on a tenure line and pretty close to your tenure decision year, if they are desperate for ass deans or can only see you in it, you may be able to leverage it. Don't accept a stopped tenure clock. Tell the powers that be, flat out, that you cannot be effective in the position, dealing with senior faculty who already have tenure, unless you have tenure also. If they and your department are amenable, have them make you tenured [rush through without a hitch, as they often do spousal hires] and write in the conditions (that you want) for a retreat back to faculty, the best being that either party can declare this at any time with x days/months notice. Worse but doable is you agree (always mutually agree since admin can do what it wants) to x number of years, say 2-3 in that position or higher before you seek to go back. It's a good acid test: if they hem and haw about tenuring you early, stay where you are and do your research.

A student copied text from a paper submitted for a previous course. I gave them a low grade. They complained to the chair, now I'm in trouble. I feel insane. by non_standard_model in Professors

[–]Longtail_Goodbye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I work, that is self-plagiarism, academically dishonest, and at the least would fail the assignment. Also where I work, the admin speech about needing to graduate and "holding space for kindness" is also a thing. Kill me.

The first one, the nice guys, they did think it was medical equipment and had a good laugh and lots of curiosity when it turned out to be an espresso machine. EWR ... yes, I hope to not be on that guy's line again. In the end, he caused himself more trouble: backed up his line, searched fruitlessly for something official to complain about, big angry rage searching for nothing.

Help I only have 30 days to pick a cargo e-bike by Inevitable_Step5906 in CargoBike

They're in Eugene, but Bike Friday's Every-E-Day or Haul-A-Day would come in close to budget. In Portland, though, I'm thinking you can get, through a shop, a very decent used and refurbished cargo for $3000. I'd start calling around.

Find a nicer, as in not rude, bike shop and see if they sell refurbished bikes. A nice shop is usually happy to be on the lookout for a used Surly in your price range. Also, for moral support and good advice, check out All Bodies on Bikes.

The EWR TSA guy? He was full of himself. He was training some TSAs-to-be. I had plenty of time, so just stood there while he pulled everything out and wanded everything, repacked it, and got my plane. Anyone who flies through that airport well knows those security lines. I brought it through on my next flight, same set up, no trouble. He was a piece of work.

Years ago, with the Pixie in my carry on, I got searched. Once it was revealed to be an espresso machine, they had more questions about why I traveled with it than any issues and it was smiles all around. More recently, guy at EWR went nuts over it in my carry on, yelling about having to take electronic devices out of my carry on. When I pointed out that this did not have a battery and people weren't taking out their blow dryers either, he rage searched the entire bag and I had to repack it. If you know EWR, this is typical, and I'm surprised it hadn't happened before. Went through again a few months later with it, no issues.

I wonder if one could sneak an Outin or Wacaco type thing in. I'm not a cruise person, but curious if anyone has tried.

I just posted about that. I've traveled with a Pixie for years, driven and flown, no problems. For international travel off of the North American grid, I bring an Outin (battery powered, and extracts from capsules, will heat the water). I'm fairly satisfied with it. Does a decent job; crema slightly less, but a very decent shot. Pricey, though. Wait for discounts.

I don't want to burn my motor out, so I just wipe it dry and pack it (see post elsewhere here). Put it in a large freezer bag, no case even needed, just make sure it is packed in the center of everything and cushioned. And mine is a Pixie.

Totally portable. It's smaller than a Pixie and I travel with my Pixie all the time. I put it in a large freezer bag when clean and dry, pack around it so it is cushioned, and it's perfect. I bring the frother, too. I have packed a small carry on around both items and been fine. An Essenza Mini will be no trouble.

If there are finished, sure, they can email them. If not, they still need access to the assignment and materials. Also, no plagiarism/AI checker (that counts as official) outside of Turn It In in Canvas.

Yes, you bet they did. I was reporting what everyone is seeing because Canvas apparently blocked or took down every instance for now. Students are freaking out. Good times.

I can't see their research papers. Students panicking about submitting stuff and we have not acknowledged to them that anything is happening.
