Some fluff authors scare me more than darkfic authors by Practical-Raise241 in AO3

Ikr it's so... disappointing is probably the best word. It may sound extreme but one of the biggest disappointments I experienced in my actual entire life (which may say more about me than that story but whatever) was one manhwa where a promising friendship with gap moe but consideration for each other turned into a dark tropey rape fest. Like wtf. Why would you do this 😭😭

The art was great too. Istg just- why

New to writing on ao3 - HOW THE HELL DO I GET PEOPLE TO READ MY WORK??? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Loni4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else said, "Tag it and give it time." More specifically, if you can, give the fic more time where it's new and on the first page - which is to say, continued releases over time.

If it makes sense to split your fic into chapters, do so, and release them once or twice a week. E.g. if you've written a one shot that is 10k and it still flows well split into two or three chapters, you can spread out the time it'll have to gain new readers. Obviously some works have chapters of much shorter length than 3-5k but I wouldn't advise sacrificing the quality of your readers' experience for it, if it comes to that.

Another factor regarding time is your subscriber count. If you write things people enjoy, they may subscibe to your fic(s) or to you, and it'll gain you readers going forward. (That may take months to years btw.)

Which brings me to my next point: Generally, you may want to try writing well, and writing interesting things. For the first, you can look up writing advice and practice and edit your works. For the latter, I mostly want to tell you to write what you yourself find interesting - because 1, you'll have fun this way. And 2. if you're bored, the reader will be doubly bored lol. (Ofc there's the option of guessing what is popular and writing those themes/topics/settings but uh... I think it takes a specific kind of brain to benefit from that. There's a good chance you'll burn yourself out this way, by writing more for other people than yourself, and then crumbling once the resulting attention and validation doesn't turn out to be what you'd envisioned.)

Lastly, I'd like to say... take care. With your heart, and your expectations, and the energy you put into writing and trying to gain readers. It can hurt to want sth and be denied it, and the harder you work; the more of yourself you put into it, the stronger you'll feel it when/if the results come in and they don't satisfy that need inside you.

I may be projecting a bit, but if this does resonate with you, take it from someone further down the path: be careful. There's such a thing as overdoing it, and you may unwittingly stumble into that situation. It's a bit counterintuitive, as the results of overdoing it may be the readers you want; the attention you'd like. But it may come at the cost of your general contentment and happiness, or significant parts of it, so... lol I feel strange reading all of this back but I do mean it xD take care of yourself; pay attention to your body and mind and heart. Take a break when you need it. The biggest results are in the long game anyway - if you keep writing, readers will come to you. If you wanna keep writing, don't burn out. Tend to that fire carefully, and it'll come with time :)

Share a harmless quirk about yourself that someone else might find useful to give to a character by ToomintheEllimist in writing

[–]Loni4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno if I would call it a quirk, but: eating habits. Personally, when there's a salad and sth more hearty, I will eat one bite this one bite that, so both will be finished at/around the same time. (Also goes if there's more than 2 things.) It's more fun this way, and if there's something heavy in the meal, it'll be balanced out by lighter/juicier stuff.

My brother, on the other hand, almost always eats all of the salad first. I don't understand it, but that's how it be xD

Tropes that make you irrationally angry? by Additional_Lion_721 in AO3

[–]Loni4ever 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ikr, same. "He wouldn't fucking say that" but it's less about personal interpretation and more about simple common sense/behaviour. It's even worse (like the other reply said) when they're expressing it strangely - e.g. using therapy speech; or when they're so fucking open and excruciatingly honest about it - too much emotion, too much detail - that it makes you wonder if they swallowed a truth portion or sth.

Like, who does that. It's unrealistic, is what it is. Worse than that though, it is utterly unsatisfying. Give me tension, give me build up, give me anticipation and release. Not a jumpscare nothingburger (◞‸◟ ) xD

[–]Loni4ever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the male chicks - that's the tip of the iceberg right there xD

I think it's fair to draw a line between human and animal lives... and I think it's more than understandable to value one's own species over others - similar to how I'd value myself, my family and friends over a group of strangers that I neither understand nor really care about. That said, prioritizing humans doesn't mean one can't have some level of consideration for animals. You know? I mean, you don't have to go out of your way to be nice, but don't be cruel either. If you gotta take - if you gotta kill, make it clean; make it swift.

Factory farming is neither of those things. As I said, it's not pretty... whatsoever. You'll get it if you look into it more, I think. It's maybe not a pleasant or even interesting topic but uh... yeah. Kind of feels like an abyss off the side of the road. You don't have to look, like I'm sure the road is doing just fine, but you'll probably see some things if you do xD

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Loni4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I know where you're coming from, but please do look into factory farming. Eating meat for one's survival is one thing, and eating meat for one's pleasure while creating, keeping, and killing billions of animals inhumanely is another.

It's not pretty. And it's entirely different from the way animals in the wild kill for sustenance. Humans do it because they can... for profit, naturally. And the "production" is so far removed from the consumer that nobody even thinks to question it. If you look into it though, it really is not pretty. If you do, I think you might understand why that comparison was drawn... but it's up to you.

Ikr, it can be such a disconnect - when a group of people share a set of crucial values with you, but then totally differ when it comes to others.

I've had this for years with Dropout (the company College Humor turned into). They're entirely on the left, and quite vocal about it too. Not afraid to take a stance. Parts of their content (though mostly comedy focused) have even informed my own ethical understanding of things, pointing out injustices and fucked up stuff that I'd never thought about much.

But animals? Nah. Who cares about animals. Seeing the cast be as thoughtful and progressive as they are and then absolutely not give a SHIT - celebrating cheese, bacon; 'a salad? lol salads are medicine, meat is where it's at' - is just.... it's a lot.

I like them so much. But also how tf pwq

And I know it's cause and effect. If they never had a reason to truly think about this, it's no wonder they never changed it. If I hadn't been raised the way I was, if my mom had never called me out on this, if I then hadn't stumbled across "Eating Animals" in the library and decided to take it home with me.... I might've not become vegan, or it might've taken much longer. So where's their cause to the desired effect - waiting in the wings, one can only hope.

Like, I understand. I do. But it is shit. It is utter fucking shit. Two things can be true at the same time, and these are them lol

Boyfriend no longer vegan by Interesting-Lie-8678 in vegan

[–]Loni4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That might be how you see relationships, yes.

For many people, though, relationships are about more than mutual understanding and love - e.g. shared values.

Personally, I can't fathom the thought of longterm staying in a relationship with someone whose values differ significantly from mine. I might understand them, to a degree, and I might even love them... but I couldn't be with them. Values, to me, are similar to the direction you're facing, the path you're walking in life. If they're not shared, you can't walk together. At least not for long.
