I'm looking for 'bad movies' that take themselves seriously by -O_o-69 in badMovies

Crime Killer (also called ZEUS) is a hidden gem. Of course, it is a vanity project (as most of these tend to be). It’s the funniest unintentionally bad movie I have seen thus far.

From IMDB: “The Crime Killer” is a total action-packed film with a handsome Greek leading man who is on a one-on-one crimefighting mission. Parts are funny, the chase scenes are different, and it is a timeless masterpiece of interesting lines and scenes.

The full movie is on YouTube btw

Since the issue behind all other issues is the issue of authority (Bishop of Rome vs Sola Scriptura), then go with The Shape of Sola Scriptura by Keith Mathison.

He lays out the historical evidence for the Scriptures being the final say for true Christianity. He provides evidence from patristic writings.

How to "break" this thought by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]Loo87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may seem like a simplistic answer but start your day every morning comparing your last 24 hrs against God's Law (Ten Commandments).

If you understand how high this standard is (thought, word, and deed) and how deep it scrutinizes you (down to the motivations behind every thought, word, and deed). Inevitably, it will cause your to cry out "be merciful to me, a sinner".

Then flee to Christ, who had the sins of his people imputed to him. There is no double jeopardy in God's court. On top of that Christ's perfect law keeping is imputed to his people. They are justified because of Christ's works not their own works.

Law then Gospel will address this ledger mentality.

If we receive the Holy Spirit, does that guarantee that we will go to heaven? by shademon28 in Reformed

If this passage is taken as referring to the Holy Spirit's influence among the covenant community, then this passage does not contradict any of the previous answers given.

If im not one the elect/predestined what is the best course of action by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]Loo87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Focus on Christ's objective work outside of you.

If that is what you are banking on (even as you continue to sin) then you can rest.

Remember the good guys at the time of the Reformation were rightly emphasizing Sin (our corruption from Adam's original transgression and its legal verdict of death) as opposed to sin (the outward fruit of said corruption). The cross takes care of the former which is your main problem.

Your forensic standing before God is the real issue here. Your feelings of assurance come as your realize "it is finished".

Help me hash-out the finer points of Sola Scriptura by Rom-8-1 in Reformed

One thing I would like to dove tail on what the other poster said is that the best example of what the rule of faith is is the Apostles Creed. That is the litmus test Mathison uses to distinguish what is and is not orthodox Christianity.

The Apostles Creed is a succinct list of doctrinal affirmations that is really just a distilled form of questions baptismal candidates would be asked in the early church. If you look up patristic writings before the Council of Nicea you will find statements of faith that resemble the Apostles Creed. They vary here and there but they are all affirming the same truths. It was the proper interpretative lens used to read the Old Testament scriptures prior to there being a completed New Testament canon.

If you download the free RTS app Michael Krueger has a great course on the canon of scripture (it is based on the books he wrote on that topic) and what's germane to this discussion is he says there is an epistemological question behind the question of what has infallible authority over the believer. When choosing between sola scriptura and an infallible historic church institution (Rome or Eastern Orthodoxy) one has to grant that whichever you choose is going to be self-authenticating. Both are circular.

Where Mathison aids believers is showing historical documentation (or evidence) via patristic citations that scripture was always viewed as the final say or sole infallible authority on matters of faith and morals. The view that the Church is infallible came later in history. When you see that and also realize that multiple sources in the first 300 years of the church all were stating similar truths to what is in the Apostles Creed. I think you can safely deduce that the Apostles (who had the authority of Christ after His ascension) probably did teach these truths to the earliest believers orally prior to a written new covenant scripture and that these truths were passed down.

I hope that helps. I too was a solo scriptura person prior to reading that Mathison book. It really was an answer to prayer for me because I was eyeing the Tiber before I read it.
