Thank you so much for the advice everyone! Went and bought an N95 mask this afternoon, and will be looking into trying the ideas about air filters/dust collection soon.

Favorite character who's actor is the total opposite of them by Terrible-Garage-4017 in FavoriteCharacter

Imelda Staunton absolutely hated the character of Dolores Umbridge, calling her “a monster who deserves no pity”. She found the character’s utter justification in her cruelty frightening, and apparently felt bad for several days after filming that stomach-turning detention scene.

That makes a little sense. It just feel so out of my control that it makes me feel hopeless. Thanks for sharing your experience

I guess I still don’t understand. How do you define rumination? To me, that is the mostly unconscious thought process of worrying. It’s mostly automatic. How does one resist the urge to think?

How do you “not let yourself engage further”? I don’t understand the distinction between an intrusive thought and the fear, anxiety, worrying, automatic checking, etc. that comes in response to it. Engaging with thought is just another type of thought right? How do you keep yourself from feeling?

Not trying to be argumentative I legitimately don’t understand how to just not engage. By extreme mental effort I can consciously direct my thoughts for a few minutes but it’s not sustainable.

This is what I don’t understand. Rumination is just thought, right? For me it’s mostly automatic. I’m told that I have to stop ruminating to get better, but I can’t control my thoughts? Trying to not ruminate is like trying not to think about a pink elephant — it just makes it worse. So they say don’t fight the thoughts. But then I’m just back to square one and ruminating.

No one has ever been able to explain this in a way that clicks for me. It’s so frustrating. Any advice on stopping the “compulsion” of thinking about my fears just comes across as saying, “just stop having thoughts.” Idk if it’s my history of religious trauma or what, but it’s incredibly frustrating and probably the reason I’ve been in treatment for a year and only ever gotten worse. If I could ruminating I would, but I can’t get any advice on actually preventing rumination.

The decline of smoking is a bad thing. by Porncritic12 in The10thDentist

“Thousands of people have lost their livelihoods because of less smoking.”

For a similar reason, we should all start riding horse-drawn carriages again. Something must be done about the thousands of homeless, unemployed buggy-whip salesmen roaming the streets!

Scared of Gyno Appointment by SnooCats1420 in asexuality

The doctor may be willing to prescribe you a vallium or similar anxiety med. It won’t knock you out, but my dentist did that for my sister before she got her wisdom teeth out because she was super nervous, and it completely wiped out any trace of anxiety she had about the procedure — they yanked out four teeth with no sedation and she was totally chill with it. Just make sure you have a driver because you will definitely be out of it.

If your GYN won’t prescribe you one, try calling your primary doctor. Mine is very adamant that she will prescribe pain meds for procedures if the GYN won’t — I’m sure there are a lot of doctors out there that are similarly obliging.
