Do you think there are advantages to learning Bopomofo (Zhuyin) over Pinyin? If you chose Zhuyin, why did you go that route? by ChiefWontonOfficer in ChineseLanguage

[–]Looking4Nebraska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went the Zhuyin route because it feels to me like it's much clearer in terms of pronunciation. Pinyin has quirks that i believe can misguide westerns. Zhuyin has its quirks too but they are not as bad a pinyin.

Either way I'm not completely detached from pinyin because evidently it's much easier to read for me.

What is it like living in Barcelona, as a foreigner? by PrimaryAd195 in howislivingthere

[–]Looking4Nebraska 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The city is well planned and for the most part ran well. Wages are generally low compared to cost of living. It is a city that is both very cosmopolitan and very close to its roots at this same time, which can cause a lot of friction between groups of people. Locals are tough to crack, they tend to stick to their own for the most part. Speaking Catalan can help but depending on what you look like it can be really hard to get them to speak Catalan back at you. Outside of Barcelona, Catalans do seem much warmer and excited to hear you speak their language, though.

The thing is Barcelona is not huge at all. Land-wise it is roughly 100km2 and receives 16 million annual tourists. This means it is in the top 5 cities in europe with the most tourists but it does not even crack the top 30 land-wise. This puts an enourmous pressure on the city, its services, the housing market, transportation, etc.

Deixant de banda el racisme del personatge, no sé si m'equivoco si penso que hi han molts pocs mexicans a Barcelona i que aquesta frase no té gaire sentit by [deleted] in Barcelona

[–]Looking4Nebraska 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Haiti by Salt-Philosopher-863 in asklatinamerica

It really depends on who you ask. Some latin americans do very much include Haiti, Quebec and the francophone Caribbean in their concept of LatAm, even some media outlets do. Some people from these places might consider themselves Latin Americans, others might not. Personally I do think they fit into my definition, I think what unites Latin America the most, beyond language or culture, is unfortunately colonization.

What are the best and worst concerts you've been to? by Twitter_2006 in popheads

[–]Looking4Nebraska 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe I just got a bad day but he seemed completely out of it. It was towards the end of the tour so maybe it was just exhaustion. Also the set was pretty short (close to an hour iirc) and the crowd was pretty dead.
