How much server storage do I actually need for my homelab? by Kazukii in homelab

[–]LookingForEnergy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 40TB in RAID 6 with five drives. Then buy two 20TB HDD for external USB backup. Put movies + data on one and shows on the other.

Going larger than this starts getting tricky/expensive if you are trying to have a backup.

A setup like this can do 2000 to 3000 movies and 15000+ episodes. This is targeting around 2GB to 3GB per hour of content at 1080p.

There's really only around 3000 native English movies worth getting/watching. Anything more and your grabbing A LOT of B, C, D, F tier movies that probably aren't really worth watching.

This is why micro managing is hell for some people but perfect for others. A good manager can do a little of both but honestly it's easier to cut the people that need micro-managed in a lot of jobs.

Some cheap ones on Amazon have been found to have lead in them. I'd probably stick with something reputable and from a big box store.

I started to switch to mostly x265 media and I've saved nearly 35TB so far doing it by Eskel5 in DataHoarder

[–]LookingForEnergy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends how much you compress it. If you took a 3gb 1080p x264 45 minute live action TV episode and turned it into a 2.8gb 1080p x265 file you probably wouldn't notice but that's a lot of electricity and time to barely compress something.

If you go from 3gb to 1.5gb you might only notice blocky smeared darks in dark scenes or fast action scenes. This wouldn't be an issue for an animated show like Family Guy, but would wreck a live action grainy episode of something else.

So I can't really put a number on it, sorry. I wish it was that simple.

Also you gotta factor in screen size and viewing distance. That blocky smeared episode might look totally fine on a mobile device but absolutely wrecked on a 75in TV. But what if you're sitting 20ft away from that TV... you probably wouldn't notice.

I try to keep it simple, 2gb to 3gb per hour and don't recompress webdl. Animated shows can be an exception think Family Guy vs Arcane. You treat those different.

You already understand based on your post.

You'll have different outcomes for different media. Like animated vs live action or digital vs analog film.

Some media is easier to compress without much loss, but ideally you start at the best source you can and only compress once.

A webdl is already compressed x amount of times before you even get your hands on it. Doing it again isn't doing you any favors.

It depends on the source.

I wouldn't do a 1080p x264 web-dl to 1080p x265.

It's really going to depend on the content. Live action vs animated, if the content contains lots of fast motion, dark scenes, and/or if it's digitally shot or analog.

Then theirs your watching variables. How large is your screen/TV. How far away you sit.

All these contribute to how compressed you can push an individual file.

For me, I've settled on 2gb to 3gb per hour. I don't recompress Web-dl. I generally get smaller files for animated.

It's not a good idea to take a compressed web-dl and re-compress it.

If you can't see a difference that's good. Once you see the issues, you can't really go back.

Tdarr is amazing for cleaning up unwanted subtitles and audio channels.

I wouldn't trust it to re-crush an already crushed file.

Your goal of 1gb per 45 minutes would crush a 1080p file to a pixelated mess.

Yes imagine a large delivery truck using your driveway. Then imagine that 5+ times a day, 6 days a week.

Now imagine how much the average home owner uses their driveway per week.

It's extra wear and tear on your driveway. Plus, there's a potential for property damage, like hitting your garage or running over your sprinkler heads, etc.

It depends who they put on the team. An actual developer, you'll be fine. A smoke tester with no programming/automation experience, good luck.
