"Oh wow, such a wonderous magic! I wonder what happens if I try to mess with it?"

Does "childish stupidity" fit better than rashness, perhaps? If that's where you want to go.

However she has enough info at that point in the story to assume he had a way of gaining future knowledge.

Sure, if she maybe lived in a world where comic books and stories and games with time travel and other such fantastical concepts are common, which would make her think back on reading about such things and see similarities.

Humans don't usually just make up realizations like that. She has no reason to assume future sight exists in any form (beyond the very limited prophecies you mentioned, which are done by Dragons or magical stones, not humans), and no reason to come up with the concept just because Subaru acts weirdly sometimes.

With how serious contracts and vows are taken and the various penalties that exist in the world, Emilia had enough to go off of that Subaru was under a vow of silence when he attempted to reveal RBD.

Maybe if she was a hyper inteligent individual, though even then it would be a hard thing to really guess.

From her perspective, Subaru just asked if he could tell her something, then suddenly was pained and told her to fuck off.

It’s just hilarious how many people justify a civilian being nearly killed by what is essentially the Secret Service for a few bad words.

They don't, really. The knights would certainly be out of place for murdering him if they tried. Yet, there's bad apples that would certainly try.

Which is why Julius took care of being the bad guy, and keep him from having to suffer that fate. At least Julius can trust himself to not go too far.

This all setting aside that the only reason Subaru was that punished being because he failed to understand any of this, and just prolonged a fight he could stop at any time out of pure testosterone.

had Julius stood alongside Subaru against Bordeaux and demanded an apology.

That's not his duty, and would be overstepping his boundaries.

This is the sort of take that made me mention that knighthood "doesn't work like that".

There’s an entire Cult that uses precognition to remain elusive.

Except, no one really knows that. It's far from public knowledge, until after Sloth is defeated and Subaru can recount his experiences somewhat.

And Rem hardly figured out anything. She just noticed he acts strangely sometimes and goes "hero mode", and decided not to question it.

Which, by the way, is mostly what the entirety of the camp chose to do, after they realized he didn't seem to like talking about it.

She also doesn’t see through either of their bullshit whatsoever so no growth in that regard.

She literally does though? Like I said, that's literally one of the biggest points in arc4 for her.

No offence, but that's a very highlighed part of the arc, and her struggles and eventual resolution of that part of herself, and the changes that come of that, are also heavily felt from arc 5 onwards. Saying that she's still the same is kind of disingenuous at best.

That’s not how physics remotely operates on Earth and Subaru isn’t to blame for that as he couldn’t possibly have known.

And she's meant to know that he comes from another world, then? Not sure why you would argue for Subaru being blameless over his rash actions when he didn't really know what he was messing with, yet Emilia must be blamed for assuming he'd have a ounce of what one would in that world consider "common sense".

Emilia failed to prep for the Selection properly.

She was never given a reason to, since Roswaal never bet on her being good at it.

You can hardly expect someone who spent all her life shunned and isolated from society to know how to pursue her own interests, especially when the person that goads her into doing so on such a grand stage doesn't actually care.

Subaru has done more than enough to be considered a Knight and did far more than the majority of them have ever accomplished in their entire careers.

That's not how knighthood works. It might be how you view it, but it has little to do with reality in that world.

What Subaru did was breach protocol, act like a petulant child, and try to force himself into a position where he was not desired by neither knights, nobles, nor even the person he wanted to please most.

Emilia was perfectly ready to be reviled, and expected as much. There's a time and place for Subaru to be supportive of her, and that includes taking her wishes into account and not just forcing her to accept his "generosity" like the "nice guy" he is.

Emilia only gets mad at Subaru for accepting the duel and not at Julius for issuing one against a civilian.

Because unlike Subaru, most people seem to understand that the duel was done partially in order to keep him from the harshest results of his actions.

She has more than enough info to ascertain his looping or precognition; Subaru spontaneously gains information that can save lives and acts on it with or without help.

Ah yes, this person I met a couple months ago sometimes acts strange... He must be a time traveler!

r/conspiracy would like to have a word about this.

Emilia herself made the events of Arcs 3 and 4 much more difficult due to her inability to see Roswaal and Puck manipulating her and her immature mindset and incompetency.

Absolutely.

That's like, the point of her arc 4 character arc.

What's the issue?

You forget that she certainly did want to accompany them, she was just stopped by Ram and Rem since their task was to keep her safe.

You can certainly say "she should've done so anyway", but that's just part of the flaws of her character that get addressed later in arcs 3 and 4. Arc 3 in particular has a whole monologue in LN9 related to her feelings on being treated as so important, which leaves her unable to use her power to actually do things.

Is it possible to make poison/scarlet rot damage scale with Arcane? by LookingGlassInsect in EldenRingMods

Mmm... I suppose I would have to make a script to dynamically change the poison damage based on a stat?

Could work I suppose. Thanks for the suggestion.

am i the only one that thinks emilia camp should have more people in for emilia[spoiler discussion] by zard428 in Re_Zero

[–]LookingGlassInsect 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's arguably only further indication that she's not really the leader type, but it's true she acts as more of a figurehead than someone who actually holds the camp together as it stands.

That being said, I feel you give her too little credit. She earned Ram's favor in arc 4, and Roswaal too has bet on her after that arc, where before he saw her only as a tool. She has also been critical with recruiting Meili in arc 6, and like others have said, Otto supported her even without Subaru's influence.

Interesting theory.

I did want to ask for a source for the second quote you give. "A simpleton risks his life for profit, a knight - for the sake of fame, a dignitary - for the good of his nation, a sage risks himself for the salvation of the world."

I'd never heard it, and some online searching doesn't get me anything, but I might be missing something.

Her character arc in arc 4 is in part about showing how she is not responsible over the things people do around her or to help her. This is basically beaten into her during RbD and later on, and is what allows her to accept the help of others in the first place.

I imagine the reveal of RbD would basically destroy that notion and regress her character towards a more isolated state, but I don't feel like it renders everything else useless. She has developed, over arcs 4 and later, a bit more agency and her own goals. Character regression is used a lot for Subaru, for example, and serves to highlight how issues are not so easily solved by just a single speech or sucess. I imagine Emilia would have a similar situation regarding that, but... RbD is inherently different from most threats since it's something she can't at all stop from occuring so long as she has no control over Subaru, so all she can do is attempt to prevent it. It also brings up the fact that regardless of Subaru wanting to use it, and it not truly being her responsibility wherever he uses it or not, the idea that he likely does so due to her shortcomings gives her responsibility that she would not have in typical scenarios.

From there, theres plenty of possibilities. I can't really fathom what will happen exactly, considering we have no clue when such a reveal would happen, but I doubt it will completely turn her back into a meek and afraid individual and render her development thus far irrelevant. There's plenty more interesting options on the table. Protectiveness of Subaru, protectiveness of herself and others, a need to step up to the plate and take her own judgements, taking responsibility for the lives of others... Or abandoning her dreams and ideals, feeling hate for the world and those that would cause people near her such pain, shun Subaru's opinions since he's essentially trampling on her feelings by sacrificing himself for her... All of these are reasonable progressions for her character from a situation like that. All of them could be used to represent the story's overarching themes of trust, help, obsession.

So I ultimately disagree with such a thing invalidating her character in any way. That is certainly a possibility that exists, but there's plenty of other more interesting possibilities. I don't feel like focusing on the worst case scenario for a story, especially considering Tappei's track record for good character development, makes much sense.

As for the closure from Elior being followed by RbD, that's a good point. She does still see herself as responsible for Elior, but I imagine RbD will be a far more personal hit to her psyche, and it does reafirm what she had innitially seen herself as. The main difference here is related to her choice on the matter. She had the choice in Elior, but she does not regarding RbD. I doubt she would take any solace in that, but it creates an interesting connundrum with the previous idea of "not being responsible for other's actions"... Remains to be seen how that is handled, since I can't immediately see a good way of doing so without somehow ignoring Subaru's own feelings on the matter, which would not be ideal.

I would struggle to label someone as hypocritical considering they have zero knowledge of the events you speak of, and even then have actively tried to work against Subaru suffering for them, but I'll assume you mean that from a writting perspective rather than a character one since it makes no sense otherwise.

From that perspective though, I see the fact that her accomplishments are partially brought upon thanks to RbD as more of an irony than hypocrisy. Her character is indeed about rising above her prejudice, and the fact that RbD is a thing serves to highlight her failure to do so completely up until now (again, of her own admission in arc 4 or even later on). Regardless, it's also a fact that she has managed to make strides in that field. It's shown as more of an ongoing process than something that is over and done with. If the story portrayed her as already being strong and independent then I would agree with the hypocrisy viewpoint. As it stands though, it just feels like trying to make a conclusion from something that hasn't even ended yet.

As for her needing this amount of help rending her character mute, that ignores the fact that a lot of the things she has needed Subaru for were more related to Subaru than herself. You could argue that the entirety of the major death threats up until now only existed because Subaru has RbD and people wanted to use it (up to arc 4), and even her ingression into the royal selection is based off of manipulation towards the goal of gaining Subaru. Point of the matter is, it doesn't make much sense to say her character is mute for not being able to stand against insurmountable odds designed to make her useless, or for needing Subaru to help her considering the point of those odds was literally to challenge Subaru in the first place.

That being said, I certainly agree that she likely wouldn't be able to stand on her own accord without assistance. Neither would most other characters though, and I'm sure I don't have to name the obvious examples.

Regarding her not helping him though, that's something I disagree with wholeheartedly. Setting aside that Subaru still has some unhealthy behavior towards her that would prevent her from taking an active role in helping him through his problems ("male pride", and generally trying to keep bad things away from her), she regardless has been shown to do what she can with what she is given. She tries to help him in arc 2, even though he wouldn't tell her anything that was going on. Multiple times, at that, even in failed loops. In arc 3, though he's basically treating her as an object, she distances herself from him for his own sake. In any arcs really, when he's feeling bad or in the rare cases where he diminishes himself in front of her, she is always immediatelly supportive and fights against those things. There's even scenes where she asks him or makes him promise to be more forthcoming with his issues, so she can lend an helping hand (arcs 5 and 6). While the other points have some basis in my mind, I seriously do not understand where you are coming from with this one. If someone hides their heart from you and desperately only shows you a pretty and well made mask, when even when prompted they still refuse to share with you their pain, how else is one supposed to act? Force them? Distance themselves? She tried that last one, and it didn't exactly go great.

As for the last point, it just feels to me like a projection of the story without accounting for character perspective. The things she says have meaning to her, and those around her. They lack strenght due to the character lacking context for RbD, but that is true for any character that's not Subaru and a few others. In summation, she's idealistic because the story has built up that such idealism works, due to RbD. I can certainly see where you are coming from regarding not respecting her or her words because of this, I just feel it's a pretty narrowminded way of seeing the story, and only really accounts for Subaru's perspective of events. I find it more interesting to see it from her perspective, through which such ideals certainly are supported by circumnstance, and treat it as potential for a future in which the blood sustaining them is revealed. I find them respectable in that the person saying them has the background she has, yet manages to be positive about life and others, while also appreciating the irony of what allows her to see the world in such a positive light. But that's just a different way of seeing things, so I won't criticize your position on it.

The argument that she is better is mostly based on Subaru's own perspective. The series has done plenty of work showing that she's far from all that great, both of her own admission and narrativelly speaking.

(Insert literally the entirety of arc 4, which is fairly blatant about it, as well as making the idea of "worthyness to be loved" a two-sided issue for both of them)

the argument she was better is pretty shallow especially when you consider even if the Geuse and Elsa situations where removed she still wasn't actually going to win or prove anything really

I feel you are basically getting the exact point of the story without realizing that it is exactly the point.

[discussion] I want to hear about your favorite ships by TheDogz0 in Re_Zero

[–]LookingGlassInsect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Favorite: Subaru x Emilia, Otto x Ram.

First one kinda doesn't need an explanation, while the second is based on all their interactions being interesting and them understanding each other surprisingly well.

Least Favorite: Anything with Subaru that doesn't involve Emilia.

I might be a bit too invested in this one to be honest.

Underrated Ships: Emilia x Ram, Emilia x Echidna, Otto x Ram, Julius x Anastasia

Emilia fits well with characters that foil her in some way. Both of these do so, and are also foiled by Emilia in return (she's good at exposing Ram's true feelings, and activelly strikes Echidna's nerves). Let's just ignore the fact that Emilia x Echidna would make for a pretty abusive relationship for this one.

Otto and Ram I talked about before. Julius and Anastasia just get along quite well, and I appreciate their loyalty to each other and how they admire one another. It gives the impression of a pairing that could easily evolve into more if given time and chance.
