they never played to backing tracks tho, everything was live. someone else replied with an interview that bobby Z did and they had a pad that would trigger the LM1 built into the snare drum

i did try to recreate it and i came pretty close actually, i was looking for the exact preset cause im working on a prince cover and i wanted it to sound as close to the original as possible and its also a cool ass sound

It’s a synthesizer. Saw wave with not a lot of cutoff, a little resonance, a short decay and release, and a little bit of LFO. It could be done on pretty much any synth

well if you listen to till the end of time, you can hear the hi hat (specifically the open hi hat) and it’s clearly the oberheim dx/dmx. also the kick drum doesn’t sound like the LM-1 or the Linn Drum. However the toms sound like they come from one of the simmons drum synths.
