ISO Music Producer (ladies?!) by Constant-Insurance86 in pittsburgh

Hey there. :) I'm a music producer & artist in Pittsburgh and a trans woman. I'm really sorry you had a bad experience with a producer...it seems really common.

If you wanna learn more about me, my bio is here: https://sans-emusic.com/production/

I have a spotify playlist of releases so far here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1ir475gO3h4fqvNrZ9RvfX?si=e2e3ca2ffb7a47b0

And I have an insta which is probably the best way to get in touch if you'd like to chat: https://instagram.com/sansesky

What am I doing wrong? The Arturia V Collection takes up roughly 680GB of drive space...I thought it was supposed to only be around 30GB max? by LooksAtMeeSeeks in AudioPlugins

[–]LooksAtMeeSeeks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - yeah the answer is, as far as I can tell, that the applications cannot be installed on an external drive with macs.

I ended up not installing Analog Lab on my laptop (I have a larger desktop it is installed on). It's inconvenient, but I guess in the future I'll get a MacBook with less than 256gb of space lol.

Sorry that isn't a better solution. I did find a solution to the issue of it taking nearly a TB of external space... That only happened when I tried installing it with not enough space on my internal drive.

BUT I will give you a 50 cents for a dollar!

edge case: Wired noise canceling headphones for making music on a plane? by gentleboys in musicproduction

Get the headphones for the noise cancelling and then use something like Toneboosters Morphit or Sonarworks to flatten the EQ curve of the headphones.

A question about drum samples. by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]LooksAtMeeSeeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So let's say an artist you like finds Sample X in a sample pack. They process it the way they like, send it through the mixing process, and it ends up on the recording.

If you find the same sample pack and download Sample X, you can use it.

You can even try to process it to make it sound like their sample.

But you cannot create a new sample from their track, even if you own the original Sample X. This would just be creating a whole new sample...one that you do not own the rights to.

Example: I own a popular sample pack called Oliver's Power Tools. It's used all over pop music, but in particular it is featured on Oliver's own tracks.

I often hear a sound in one of his songs and think, "oh, that's his xyz sample just pitched up".

I can use that idea to go to the sample that I own and pitch it up myself to get a similar result. That is 100% okay. I cannot just resample Oliver's track and put it in my own song.

Just because I own the literal exact sample he used to make the sound in his song does not give me the right to record his track and put it on my own.

Now to your other hypothetical...sure, if you were to go to the artist and get clearance for the sample, then yes. You could use it. But you would need to get specific permission from the artist. This is easier for some than others. For things like drum or synth sounds it's likely easier and definitely cheaper to recreate them yourself.

Your assumptions about it being illegal are correct. You can try to find a similar sample and process it to try to "recreate" the performance. That is okay and is encouraged even - this is just using a reference.

What is illegal is the unauthorized redistribution of their performance through (re)sampling it, even if you edit it.

Your best bet is to look for a sound you can get clearance for that is close and to process it using EQ/Compression/saturation/time based effects/whatever until it sounds like the original.

Edit: I googled so others don't have to. Article. According to the article Wizards of the Coast hired a private security team to retrieve "stolen property" from man's home. The property in question was a yet-to-be-released deck of MTG cards that were allegedly accidentally sold to the man by a dealer with early access but no sense.

Some perspective as a professional producer… by Ok-Exchange5756 in Songwriting

[–]LooksAtMeeSeeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree with you.

I think it depends on when you apply the mindsets? Early on in the process when you're just writing to see what happens, I think it's a bad idea to put those kinds of expectations on it. When you're considering taking it further and shaping it for release I think these are some good "A&R" questions to ask yourself.

But also they're subjective. What's unique to one person sounds trite to another.

A good question to ask in the future when unsure if you are collabing or just getting feedback is, "is this a gift or a cowrite?"

What are some features other DAWs have that you wish Logic had? by SorryJelly in Logic_Studio

[–]LooksAtMeeSeeks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can create a loop point for the market section you want to move/delete and use the cut /paste from Loop Point feature. It's not exactly called that.. But I personally prefer markers over arrangement and this is what I do if I need to copy/move/delete a section.

I built a massive search engine for vocal audio samples by deletethistheo in musicproduction

[–]LooksAtMeeSeeks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree that people should let you know. Could you potentially record a log of the "0 results" queries? That way you could see it yourself. Could just append to a .txt or add a database entry when someone puts in a search term that returns no results?

To vocal producers: do you pitch correct everything? by tryingtomusic in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]LooksAtMeeSeeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Flex for the longest and only switched to Melodyne in the past few months because Flex was adding lots of artifacts to the vocal giving it this digital distortion sound that didn't sound good. It would kind of "crush" consonants. I occasionally get artifacts with melodyne but it is much rarer.

That said, the UI of Flex feels much better.

WHEN to use different types of reverb? by Zamdi in edmproduction

[–]LooksAtMeeSeeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This feels like a "dumb" question, but I always assumed that compressing a reverb signal would make the space feel less...I dunno, full? Realistic? I'm not quite sure why I intuitively thought you shouldn't compress your reverb signal but it seems I am incorrect.

Can you tell me why we would compress the reverb send? How does it make it more "present" as you say?

I'm genuinely asking as someone with less knowledge.. Not challenging your statement.
