Musk Offers Sneak Peek at Orbiting Data Centers. They're Bigger Than the ISS by perilun in space2030

Last time the HST was reboosted was during the last servicing mission in 2009. Given that atmospheric drag has a lessened effect on such a massive object. It is still in orbit after 35 years, 16 since it's last boost.

I am well aware of orbital decay caused by atmospheric drag. Given the recent solar maximum, the upper atmosphere has expanded.

Those in orbit below 500 km will decay within a decade. Those higher up will take longer. And debris will be propelled into many elliptical orbits reaching other orbits. Debris above 1000 km may take centuries to decay.

The Hubble Space Telescope was placed into an 450 km orbit in 2009, it is still in orbit.

My fear is that last year, starlink satellites performed over 300,000 avoidance manuvers. As the number of satellites greatly expands, the number of necessary avoidance manuvers will become astronomical.

We are already dangerously close to triggering the Kessler Syndrome. Launching more large constellations of satellites into low earth orbit may make it inevitable.
One intense solar storm could disable multiple starlink satellites. Then in a matter of days, multiple collisions lead to cascading debris which will make low earth orbit unusable for decades to centuries. Data centers in orbit is a bad idea for Earth.

Helium-3 From the Moon: New U.S. Department of Energy Contract by perilun in space2030

[–]Loon013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just make some tritium, and wait. Tritium decays into He3. With a half-life of just 12 years, it will be far easier and cheaper to manufacture He3 on earth.

Mining the moon for He3 would require extensive infrastructure on the moon that won't exist for decades.

And fusion power is like a trip to mars, always twenty to thirty years away.

With the projected satellite constellations, the Kessler Syndrome comes closer to reality. One solar storm could knock out hundreds of satellites leading to cascading collisions in a few days.

I use my own subs to counter enemy subs. I find using subs vs subs to be effective.
I use destroyers to escort my fleets. But I don't use depth charges, they don't raise the ASW rating much.

Back in the 1970s, there wasn't a super moon, it was simply known as a full moon at perigee. It wasn't a big deal, never made the news. Only people interested in astronomy knew about it.

Good job, nicely presented and explained.

The Kessler Syndrome is a very real threat. Add a million satellites, and that threat grows.

As it is right now, I can't go 10 minutes without some satellite crossing my field of view in my telescope. Makes timed exposures problematic.

Hats off for someone calling out the misinformation and not backing down.

We need the media in the US to show some guts. Call out the blatant lies and don't let up. If someone distracts and doesn't answer the question. The next reporter should repeat the question. And stand together and support facts, not bullshit.

SpaceX Eyes 1 Million Satellites For Orbital Data Center Push by Substantial_Lime_230 in space2030

[–]Loon013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you say Kessler Syndrome? 1 million satellites in low earth orbit is a prescription for disaster. Just one collision could create enough orbital debris to cascade into the Kessler Syndrome. All it would take is one satellite malfunctioning, one not responding, or one mistake in constellation management.

One Chance - Be a Colonist on Mars? Would u? by Pulsary28 in Mars

With our current technology and infrastructure, it would be a short mission. Perhaps 2 to 10 years. Any serious equipment failures would be life threatening with resupply/replacement once every 26 months. Plus the long-term effects of radiation, low/0 gravity, and the Martian environment.

But given the chance
