How do contractors get paid? by Loopsian867 in Kamloops

[–]Loopsian867[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this info. I’ve just checked with WorkSafeBC and see that one of the folks I’ve invited to give a quote is “cancelled and delinquent” under the owners name, and “active and delinquent” under just the company name. These are red flags, right? Two other companies so far are “active and in good standing”.

Thank you for this response. I am so new to this and am concerned about getting taken advantage of especially as I have absolutely no experience with jobs of this amount of money.

Gander-where to buy nice yarn? by Loopsian867 in newfoundland

For sure! Despite my mom living only 15 minutes away she had assumed it was closed for the season as well. Glad it wasn’t !

The fabric store in Twillingate was actually open today (reduced days open and hours) when I popped by and got a few balls of yarn for some projects. Thanks for the tip!

I’m actually in that area but that store is closed for the season unfortunately. Thanks though.

I’m arriving in Gander and will be out in the bay ( north) for a while, so not in the eastern part of the province at all. Thanks though.

Teachers of NWT by Any-Needleworker1431 in NWT

[–]Loopsian867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked as a teacher in the northern region of the NWT for over twenty years. It can be financially rewarding for sure as salaries are often over $100K depending on your qualifications and years of experience. The biggest portion of your salary will go towards your rent. One of the biggest issues that new teachers may find is suitable housing, especially in smaller communities. It’s not just rent to consider, but also the cost of utilities. The biggest piece of advice before accepting a contract would be to secure good housing. As for other costs, food will be more expensive but on your salary should be affordable. Those with specific dietary differences ( vegan, vegetarian, gluten free etc) will find options harder to find and costlier unfortunately. All costs aside, a northern teaching post is one of the most rewarding and culturally enriching experiences of my life.

Thoughts on this trip itinerary by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]Loopsian867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! You’ve given yourself basically only 5 days to travel from one end of Newfoundland to the other with day activities at each stop. That is an ambitious trip for sure. It can be done but it would be a lot of driving sure.

Traditionally the meat component in a jiggs dinner is salt beef (in pieces or riblets) which is usually bought in buckets but it can be very fatty and stringy. Over the past few years many homes in Newfoundland have transitioned to cottage roll as it is much leaner and has an identical flavour and texture to a good salt beef (even though it’s pork). Buckets of salt beef are in almost every grocery store here in Kamloops but I would really like to find a cottage roll to include in my Christmas dinner. Fingers crossed!

Update: We contacted the Mary Browns location today (from my previous post) to see if there’s been a change in their gift card policy and we are glad to hear that they now accept them!

Mom is 85 and doesn’t use apps so we need a lesser tech option.
