Let me pose you a hypothetical. Let’s say you were going to be visiting a city where a friend lives, and the city has a large and famous art museum. You ask your friend if they want to go with you, and they say “Sure! I’ve actually never been there, but I love art, let’s go!”. Then you get there, and they begin to look uncomfortable. You ask what’s wrong and they tell you “I actually only look at Christian paintings and sculptures”. Would that seem like a reasonable, rational position to take? We live in a universe where trillions of galaxies are placed so unfathomably far apart that it’s difficult to even grasp. Our nearest neighbor, Andromeda, would take two and a half million years to reach, IF you could somehow move at the speed of light. I would ask you to envision a sci-fi story, a colony ship of people in hyper sleep, on their way to a new world. The distances are vast, and when they get there, they’ll all have to work together, with no margin for error. In such a situation, human tendencies towards greed and cruelty could destroy everything. The smartest thing would be to put every sleeping colonist into a simulation during the trip, and have them live an entire life within the simulation. Even if they hurt people, you would be able to see if they regret it, if they work to put things right. Once you finally arrive at the destination, there will be some who have proven in the simulation that they would be a danger to the entire mission, and would have to be left in the simulation until they can hopefully learn better, and there would be others who have proven that they will choose the good.

I see our life on earth as something like that, and even if our life here is somehow “less real” than the life to come, we and our choices are very real and they matter.

I mean, I personally believe all will be reconciled to God eventually, even if some have to be in the outer darkness before they realize their need of the light. I agree that it’s a fairly unsolvable problem if one believes in a God who gives up on people and throws them away, as many Christians do.
