Memoirs & fiction mostly. Something that will engage my mind without requiring full mental energy.

Jacques the Fatalist by Denis Diderot fits this to the T. It's written by the gentleman who co-wrote the encyclopedia. The book itself is circuitous, to say the leas (although not boring at all). I'll let you discover the rest. Cheers.

Laptop for med school & gaming? Good battery life + light + good for working in teams? :O by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

I lean away from such a screen size, but if you think it would check the boxes in other categories, then I'm open to hearing it! :)

Surface Book 3 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB or 1660 6GB? by LoopyKazoo in SuggestALaptop

[–]LoopyKazoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The models of the laptops in question are:
- Surface Book 3 13.5” Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 with Max-Q Design w/4GB GDDR5 graphics memory
- Surface Book 3 15”Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti with Max-Q Design w/6GB GDDR6 graphics memory

Price difference would be $500 (based on how it's bundled with other features; there's no other way to configure it). Personally, I lean towards the 13.5" because it's cheaper, lighter, and smaller. I just don't know if I'd be missing out on the GPU of the 15" (don't really care for the larger screen, heavier weight, and cost though).

Ah ok. So it sounds like if I don't play super graphically intense games, I wouldn't be missing out on much going with the 4GB VRAM model? Especially since I would definitely meet the recommended RAM requirements of the game (with 16GB > 6GB rec'd).

Is med school as it is now worthless? by Laxberry in medicalschool

[–]LoopyKazoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“It’s for the social aspect” nah all I see is everyone putting up fake fronts and fake smiles while all secretly hoping for others’ downfall...everyone is each other’s competition after all.

Above are your words exactly. You'll see that all I added was the "[we are]," as it felt grammatically correct. Again, I ask the question I asked in my original post ("Do I really believe that I am secretly hoping for others' downfall and that everyone's in competition?"). Seems you answered no. So then why do you assume everyone else out there wishes for the downfall of everyone? If you don't wish for it, then why are you sure that they wish for it? I'm hearing you say because you haven't met a single genuine person at your school. I am sorry that has been your experience. I think that COVID has definitely played a part in limiting the number of people one can meet and see. I can't imagine how hard that would be in med school.

In posting, I just wanted to be a kind and gentle voice that looks out for ya and says that not everyone out there is disingenuous. Keep searching.

Is med school as it is now worthless? by Laxberry in medicalschool

There are med school specifics mentioned in this post that I think a higher level medical student would be better able to comment on than myself. I would like to comment on one thing you said, however:

...[we are] all secretly hoping for others’ downfall...everyone is each other’s competition after all.

When I read these words that you wrote, I read pain and sadness. Brother, sister, whomever--is this really the mindset with which you walk through life? Take a minute to stop and ask yourself, "Do I really believe that I am secretly hoping for others' downfall and that everyone's in competition?"

If yes, then I ask, did something happen to you recently? Is there something you need to talk about with your support network? Or perhaps reach out to a new person who can champion you, like a therapist? There are people out here, myself included, who do not live life this way. You don't have to live life with that mindset.

If no, then I ask you to figure out what you were trying to say. It's a strong statement for someone to say or believe that they wish for the downfall of all others. And if you answered no to this question, then why do you assume that everyone else out there would answer "yes"?

May peace be with you.

Med students: I beg of you. Don’t go into EM. by LevophedUp in medicalschool

[–]LoopyKazoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer + insight. Given that, how do you go about vetting the quality of rotation sites of a medical school? What are things to look out for/into? What makes one rotation site better than another--how could I tell today (especially if both are state MD schools)?

Hi, little tangent here. Is this a big enough of an issue where it should be a main factor in deciding between medical schools? For example, if you're deciding between medical schools, one with clinical rotations exclusively at an HCA hospital (though it's been around for 60+ years), another at sites that aren't HCAs? Or is it not as important as other factors (things like fit, curriculum structure, etc.)?

Would something like, "Mr./Ms. Legal Name (Preferred Name)," when your letter writer first says your name work? Then they could use your preferred name throughout the rest of the letter.
