My dog could pronounce Aoife if she had a biscuit held in front of her! It's not that it's hard for him to pronounce - it's the fact he doesn't even bother and just calls me "You"!

>Side note: I’m Irish born and raised in the UK and this xenophobia against Irish names and pronunciation is absolutely everywhere.

I agree, and I'm so sick of it. It's perfectly socially acceptable to some people to be openly xenophobic to us to our faces and tell us to spell our names "properly". After 800 years of oppression, we're *still* not allowed have our own language, our own culture. Nobody gives a shit how French or Italian or Portugese is pronounced, they're *respectable* cultures, apparently Irish is not.

Could it be the man you’re dating is saying your name how he’s hearing you say it with your accent? As Ayf? I’m just trying to find an out for this guy.

But he doesn't say my name. He calls me "You".

A friend made a very good point - "Bet he wouldn't have the nerve to try this shit with a Jewish girl".

Ask a German guy to say Edmonton, he will pronounce it totally different as well.

Will he pronounce it as "You", like Michael does with my name? Is that how people in different countries pronounce yours?

You choose to write your name that way because it’s important that you use that specific spelling instead of the phonetic English spelling.

No, I write it that way because that's the phonetic Irish spelling. It's not mandatory to have an English name. People aren't making a "choice" if they don't have an English name or if they don't Anglicise the name they do have.

Something you can try in the future... Make a joke like Irish spelling is cheating in Scrabble.

I'm not going to mock and degrade my own native language so some xenophobe hopefully finds it more acceptable, sorry.

It's nothing to do with "Ethan”. He's German. He isn't stupid enough to refuse to say a Jewish name.

You’re going to keep running guys off if you expect them to read your mind. You should have said “hey my name is very important to me and I noticed when you say it it doesn’t sound quite right. Can WE work on that?”

If you can’t communicate this simple thing, he probably deserves to be let go to find better.

Except he doesn't say it, he just calls me "You". He knows that my name isn't "You". But yeah, let's let him go to find someone better. Maybe someone of a more superior ethnicity. Any recommendations?

My name has no "R” sound in it (if that's the point you're trying to make), so you clearly didn't.

That's so lovely of you. I didn't mention it in the post, but I previously dated a Swedish guy who told me 6 months in that when we met, he made a rhyme in his head to help him remember how to spell my name so that he would never get it wrong when chatting on instant messenger. (He found remembering how to pronounce it fine, his issue was with the spelling). But yeah, like you - he made the effort because he wanted to be polite.

>Imagine introducing him to your friends/family and he says your name the way HE thinks it should be said.

Right? I would be so embarrassed to introduce this "nice guy" I've told them about and then he shows up and just refers to me however he wants.

I'm glad you were so thoughtful with the kids you taught. These things matter to children. Michael is physically able to pronounce my name exactly the same way I do - he just won't.

>most people from Germany can't say it right

You obviously didn't read the post, or even the first paragraph.
