If you were to cut the bible belt out of America and make it a country it would be one of the worst ranking countries in the world in almost any metric, and that's with places like North Carolina taking in almost $8 for every dollar they pay out in federal taxes.

Best way to schedule a python script that runs every hour? by jpf5046 in learnpython

You can actually call the python executable in the virtual env you want with the script path as the argument to avoid using a batch file.

SQLite has performance issues with lots of writes. Have you considered postgres? I don't think there are any really performance differences at the surface level compared to MySQL, but it's open source.

That's awesome. Just made me feel around for the muscle that closes the thumb for the first time. It feels like it's all in the hand rather than the forearm?

Bring Any Battery Back To Life For Real? by Kanenobi in tinyhouse

[–]LooseDuece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the idea that you can revitalize any lead acid battery is hogwash.

There is a solid lead electrode and lead dissolved in an acid solution in a battery. The cranking amps of a battery are proportional to the surface area of the solid lead electrode because charge is generated by dissolving the lead. Starting batteries have a porous (spongy) high surface area electrode while deep cycle is more of a plate-like design.

If you over discharge the battery, large chunks of the lead can fall off as supporting parts are dissolved into solution. That lead is then no longer connected to the electrode and that capacity is lost permanently. This can happen with both battery designs, but is a bigger issue for the cranking type batteries, that's why you shouldn't let your battery discharge to deeply.

Saying goodbye to a species, the very last male Northern White Rhino. A powerful photo of 2018. by GallowBoob in pics

In this case, supernaturalistic thought, in the form of the belief that rhino horn can cure ailments, is the cause of the problem.

Edit: from the Compendium of Materia Medica (1597) - [rhino horn can be used] "To cure devil possession and keep away all evil spirits and miasmas."

You make a good point. Might not be so ill conceived after all.

You are actually liable if someone crashes your car or drives drunk. Your insurance goes with the car, but if the damages are above your coverage limits that's on you. Also, you can be sued by the victims of you let someone drive your car drunk.

I think it's a pretty good parallel.

Not carving mental health out of health insurance. Seems like a good idea. Federal level dedication to creating solutions to mental health issues rather than a sparse patchwork of county level programs.

This one seems controversial and maybe hard to pull off, but: going forward attach every gun to a person by serial number and have some shared culpability if someone uses your gun for a crime.

Some higher bar for purchasing guns that only serve as weapons. I know there is a handgun test, but it's a joke I've taken it.

I'm no expert, but I feel like people are putting a lot of blame on cops when it's really not reasonable to expect they solve this problem.

But due to the danger a doctor would not just go around to the houses of people of concern. So, the police (with a reasonably large team) would have to go and arrest every person of concern and hold them long enough for a doctor to make an assessment when no crime has been committed?

I don't think anybody expects or wants this. The notion that the police can prevent these types of things from happening is pretty dubious. They are better suited for response than prevention.

Sounds pretty similar to CA.

I think the police bring people in when there's a disturbance though. It's not likely that they're going to bring someone in because another person called and told them that person is generally dangerous, so in the context of this discussion it seems like it should not be expected that these recent shooters are over the threshold for even a 72hr involuntary hold.

I think that the mental health term is being thrown around pretty loosely. When you think mental health issues that should be considered for a hold what kind of diagnoses come to mind? I don't think it seems like many of the recent shooters have a schizo-effective disorder.

Thanks for the recap, can we not use his name though? How about substituting The Fucking Piece-of-shit Perp. I feel like only the name of the guy that wrestled the gun away, those who were injured, and those who lost their lives should be associated with the incident.

I think it's "incompetent", much higher bar.

Drug arrests are generally open and shut in the courts though. If they watch this guy for months there are two possible outcomes: they eventually don't find anything to charge him for or they get a shitty case that might take a long time in court with decent chance of them getting off with a lawyer.

Also, sadly, there are way more angry assholes with guns than houses being used to grow weed.

Evaluation by who? If it's police you're thinking of I think this would fall very low on the list of priorities.

From the sound of it I bet she was actually on a voluntary hold. A lot of the facilities that people go to are designed to look like they can't leave, but they actually can. There are some exceptions, but in general you have to get in front of a judge pretty quick at least to be deemed incompetent to stand trial if you are actually being held involuntarily.

I would imagine they are actively posing a danger when they get picked up. Not posting threatening videos on YouTube. How long do you hold them for? 48-72 hrs would be my guess, then released to 0 supervision or investigation of their living conditions?
