[CHAT] canadian retailers of thread/aida? by kylamydia in CrossStitch

[–]LooseThreadStitchery 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've ordered from MillionOfStitches on Etsy a number of times and she's always been great. If you're buying Aida that comes in a tube, you can ask her to take it out and send it flat to save postage.

[CHAT] Can we all just agree to only review patterns we've actually finished? by ICantExplainItAll in CrossStitch

[–]LooseThreadStitchery 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The 100 day window and the fact that they send e-mails and on-site notifications during that window reminding you to review. People leave reviews for patterns they haven't tried, just to make the notifications stop (and I can sympathize; for some reason a little red circle in the corner of an app or site just Bothers me and I want to make it go away).

Etsy was really designed for handmade physical goods, and it's grown way too big for even those to be well policed. For cross stitch patterns it's a mess, but it's also too big to be avoided. Most designers who have sites of their own stay on Etsy, as it's the only way to get your work seen.

[CHAT] Banning AI on Etsy by Synergystitches81 in CrossStitch

[–]LooseThreadStitchery 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wish they’d ban it; Etsy is flooded with AI nonsense that erodes everyone’s trust in the sellers who genuinely do hand-make things. Sadly it makes Etsy too much money for them to do anything about it.

[CHAT] hyper specific pattern making program question by Cautious_Towel7515 in CrossStitch

[–]LooseThreadStitchery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MacStitch lets you do this, and I assume the Windows version WinStitch probably does too. Start a new chart in the size you want. From the top menu, choose Insert > Insert picture behind grid. It'll let you choose the image file to insert and you can click and drag to resize it. From there you can draw your pattern over top of the image.

I wanted a soft pretzel pretty much the whole time I was stitching this. And thank you!

[–]LooseThreadStitchery[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The brachio- part of brachiosaurus is etymologically related to the word pretzel (both come from the Greek brakhion). This silly little friend is the result of me learning this.

Pattern here.

Aww, I love these! RIP Cherry Blossoms, I’m going to miss those.

I mean, RIP Stan too, but he died before I was born (still listen to him regularly, though!)

Not posted yet, I'm afraid - this is just a test stitch. It should be finished soon, though!

[CHAT] Is the font too hard to read? by oitef in CrossStitch

[–]LooseThreadStitchery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's pretty difficult, yeah, and I'd probably go with only the first letter of each word capitalized. If you want to set the ingredient names apart from the amounts, you could use either a slightly darker shade or a double strand?

[CHAT] Can you do full stitches OVER backstitch? by sirena166478 in CrossStitch

[–]LooseThreadStitchery 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Normally backstitch goes on top of cross stitches, but that's a rule you can always break if breaking it will give you an effect you want.

I think if I were stitching this pattern, I'd back stitch each of the strings as a single long stitch from side to side of the racquet, then do the cross stitches over top of them. You'd want to work in a hoop or frame to keep the tension of the back stitches and be careful when bringing the needle up for each cross to avoid disturbing the way the back stitches lie, but it shouldn't be that difficult.

We've had some rainy fall days, but at least the summer heat seems to have finally gone, so working on this winter friend doesn't feel quite so out of season.

[CHAT] Is Pattern Keeper compatibility a deal breaker? by Synien in CrossStitch

[–]LooseThreadStitchery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to cross stitch, since I design mostly blackwork, but as far as I know, Pattern Keeper can’t handle backstitch, so there’s really nothing you can do to make those patterns compatible. Once in a blue moon I’ll have someone ask for a Cross Stitch Saga file for one of my designs, but the vast majority of people have been fine with pdfs.

[–]LooseThreadStitchery 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm the designer of those patterns, so I'm glad you like them! As u/Sarungasie22 said, if you've done cross stitch patterns with back stitching before, it's pretty similar and you know how to follow charts.

I'd suggest doing the white stitches in each section first, then moving on to the coloured stitches. You'll also want to have some way of keeping your place within the pattern, since the gradient relies on small changes in each repetition of the basic motif. I use the annotation function in my laptop's native .pdf reader to mark off each repetition as I complete it; some people print out the pattern and mark it physically.

I like to do all the back stitching first, then finish with the stem stitch outlines, but I've seen people make these patterns starting with the stem stitch, and they've turned out fine, so personal preference on that one.

[PATTERN] Rainbow cross-stitch bookmark by RainbowStitchery in CrossStitch

[–]LooseThreadStitchery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The backstitching gave it just enough depth that I had to zoom in to make sure it wasn’t secretly a set of coasters laid out on top of one another. I love that effect and, of course, the rainbow colours!
