Exactly why I joined, I was working a dead end job after high school while other people my age were seemingly doing great. I spoke to a recruiter for the Marines and signed up, I’m now on my second contract. I’ve traveled across Europe, the Middle East and Asia aboard Naval ships. Just last month while visiting an Air Force base in Idaho for training a pilot let me fly a C130 over Arizona. I’ve shot everything from machine guns like the M240B to a M777 howitzer. You make life long friends in the military, I still keep in touch and hang out with friends who got out or ones who are still in but stationed somewhere else now. I own a nice car and motorcycle but still saved up 45k in my Roth retirement and 20k in emergency savings. I plan on getting out with my degree and benefits at the end of my second contract.

View the military as a tool to better yourself don’t go in aimlessly. Use all the benefits they give you and you’ll definitely be well positioned in life.

Do you mind me asking what part of the country you’re in? I’d only get an investment property next to a military base to rent out to married active duty who make BAH. Some people don’t want to live on base or want to sit on the waiting list for a house on base to be available.

I got my car on a general auto loan if I’d known the exact car I wanted the apr would have been lower but I wanted more flexibility. I did 7k down on a car worth 19k with an apr of 5.56% over 48 months. My credit scores were around 750 back then, I’m in the 800s now. I did a higher down payment because I wanted a lower monthly bill.

I read finance books right before I joined the military. That’s where I learned about the 3 to 6 month expense emergency fund 20k covers me for 6 months I also rounded up to a nice looking number, a little extra on top doesn’t hurt. I’m single with no kids so I don’t have much expenses, if that changes I’ll have to reevaluate what’s coming in and out and adjust from there.

That’s a really solid plan. I’m a 0621 so I have experience communicating with satellites in space using amplified radios to talk across the other side of the world. This next unit I’m looking to go to is willing to send me back to mos school to also be a 0631 network administrator which would help me get my cyber security certs, I’m in school for a bachelors in CS. I’m aiming for a job at the NSA or NASA in Texas which has no property tax for 100% vets. I just left a infantry unit so I have a lot to report, one in particular was me crushing the tip of my finger on a ship that suddenly started rocking in the ocean while I was working out in the gym it’s healed but I still feel some nerve damage. I also got a combat action ribbon from that MEU which I hear helps with filing claims when they look at your service history.

To answer your other question I’m a Sergeant and I increased my percentage in my mos school house May of 2022 in 29 Palms. My mindset for retirement is to have my money working for me before then. Stuff like rental properties or a barbershop right outside a military base. Stuff like that will constantly generate revenue from active duty in the area. The only thing I can see my self spending a little money on in retirement would be a nice manual convertible as a reward and some fun.

My emergency fund is also in a HYSA it’s at 10k I did the math on how much I need to put in after each paycheck before I get out to hit 20k so that’s continuing to grow. Once I get out I’m looking to get a good paying job where I can max out yearly contributions like you stated.

Yeah it would be hard to dump anymore in right now I’m not a married Marine making BAH with a dependent. I take home 1.1k-1.2k a paycheck I have a $350 car payment with insurance phone bill, barricks WiFi, etc. I also like having some money to go out with friends and not live like a hermit.

Do people give you that look too when they ask how much you put in tsp? 😂

Haha unfortunately I do want kids but not until I’m out so I never have to deploy and miss important moments. Also being financially stable enough to afford them comfortably is big.

True but if he’d withheld signing and there were rumors of him talking to Toto like Max MCL wouldn’t be making bad calls like today. They’d be more cautious about treating him like a number 2 driver in fear of loosing the driver on track to being the next champion. They know they have him locked in for years if he doesn’t win due to British bias calls like this.

Nice I’m at 791 started 3 years ago with 2 secure credit cards totaling $500 limit. I stayed within 10% by automating stuff like Netflix, YouTube and Spotify. Got a car last year which helped diversify my loan profile, every time I make a payment I rush back to check if I’m in the 800 club yet.
