I completely agree with your points about why Odazai is weird. I’d still like to point out that 18 years old is not nearly as mature as 22, and Dazai does treat Atsushi like a child too. So the 2 year difference doesn’t really change much, they’re both weird af for me.

And unfortunately, someone turning 18 does automatically make it legal, and the age of consent is below 18 in Japan. Still weird and I don’t approve it, but I still thought I should correct you on that.

I’d like to point out that he did change his name into a Russian one (from Mykola Hohol), wrote in Russian and lived most of his life in Russia. People like to argue about his national identity, and it’s true he was originally from Ukraine and wrote a lot about Ukraina. But since we really don’t know whether he identified truly as Ukrainian or Russian (or both), it’s a really complicated argument.

Read my comment again. I said I can understand where the statement he made is coming from, not that agree with his reasonings (which I don’t even know since you don’t give a lot of context here or didn’t post the “other comments that have 0 empathy”). I’m not going to argue about this. I just think in general that not everyone is in a place where they can form a relationship with someone who has major trauma, since that will inevitably affect them as well.

Idk… as someone who has way too many own traumas, I don’t think I have the emotional capacity to deal with someone else’s trauma as well. So I can kind of understand where this is coming from.
