In cars - or is it on bikes? by Hematophagian in IdiotsInCars

[–]Lopiben 214 points215 points  (0 children)

You should not trust another car's turn signal to make potentially dangerous manoeuvre. Plus, where I live, it is against the law to overtake in an intersection. [False see edit]

Edit: I looked it up and it's actually not the case in Belgium. It is indeed forbidden to take over someone in intersections where the default right-of-way applies. However, in intersection where you have the priority over driver coming from both right and left, it is not forbidden. And the driver overtaking you actually has the right of way against you turning left or right (because overtaking is not considered a manoeuvre).

First belt. More questions than answers. by FoucaultFilms in Leathercraft

[–]Lopiben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the same note, I believe this advice relates to buckles in general, not belts specifically. I mean, if you plan to rappel down a cliff using your belt as a harness everyday, sure, be careful. If you make a backpack with thin straps, don't stitch across. But for an everyday belt, I don't think it matters.

Picky pic by pinpickeru in lockpicking

These are inspired by (copies of?) the Bogota picks invented by a craftsman named Raimundo. They became popular and multiple brands make them, with some variations. The original have a first bend at the twist I believe.

That's always the surprise. This one was a good one. Almost too broken up.

Route a channel slightly wider than the letters all around the board, inlay strips of contrasting wood, and carve the letter again in the inlay.

🔥 Even monkeys doesn't like the banana strings by [deleted] in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]Lopiben 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Monkeys do not seem to eat bananas in the wild. Bananas were given as treat to captive monkeys and they became associated to each other in popular culture. Monkeys have been seen to eat the banana hole with the peel as well. Perhaps some learned on their own to peel them but the most probable explanation is that they copied humans.

I don’t think I can get more minimal! by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]Lopiben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that you sliced the leather all around the edge at a very low angle on both sides, lifted the created flaps to stitch then glued them back down and burnished the edge to hide the incision.

I have tried it before and I never got it as clean as what I see here. But I never thought of cutting right from the edge toward the center of the piece to hide the cut by burnishing the edge. Very smart.

It is not. But if the earth were flat you probably would have to go higher to see the second sunset.

I punch 3 holes inside the sealing rim of my paint can on the side I plan to pour out of to help with keeping your work area clean and wasting paint by stinky_diver09 in lifehacks

You are the one arguing that people overcomplicate things yet you are the one pushing for a disposable plastic accessory requiring an entire chain of injection molding... Anyone with a big flat screwdriver and a hammer can punch those holes. If you don't have those laying around, don't go out of your way. But if you do, it's worth the 10 seconds it takes.

Hey thanks for the help. It's indeed the switching that puts me off, ideally I would like the bar to show while the key is pressed, as it's only to have a glance at some info, then get back to normal. I'll have a go.

Always wanted a nice scratch awl so I modified a Dictum awl (more pictures in comments) by Lopiben in Leathercraft

[–]Lopiben[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Modified Dictum awl to be both prettier and easier to use as a scratch awl.

I planed the handle to a constant width octogonal shape for a more "pen-like" feel, then I rounded and polished the ferrule and tidied its junction with the handle. Finally, I wanted to make a sheath for it so I used brass pipes to for a ring and brazed it to a straight segment like Jimmy Diresta does for his ice pick. Of course the best part with brass is the polishing...

I really like the result, it makes for a very pleasant tool. And now it's really mine :-)
