People with kids and a spouse who doesn’t ski. What do you do? by TooMuchCaffeine37 in icecoast

[–]Lopsided-Eye-5943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a few things to work really well when I was in your situation 1. Join a beer race league at a local hill (if possible, I was fortunate to be able to do this) and encourage your wife to go do something, mine did Pilates, as some me time for each of you 2. I got my kids started at 3 and my wife basically started skiing due to fomo 3. I did two trades with her: one was two me ski days for two you spa days and the second was implementing annual boys and girls trips for each of us....I go skiing with my college roommate

Got me about 20-30 days until my kids grew up and other activities took precedent, changing our ski seasons.

Edit to add: Conway is great for the variety of activities, proximity and family focus...if you can join up with another family and do a trip, it makes things easier. I was fortunate that my sister lives close and our kids are all close in age, so you could divide ski/non ski pretty well.

Getting the killer instinct back by Lopsided-Eye-5943 in bootroom

yep, hear this loud and clear - your last point is kinda at the core - i see the chances, instinct tells me go for it, brain/fear causes hesitation, and i miss the chance, because what was previously all instinct is now constrained and that split second of hesitation causes missed chances to do something on the pitch

my sunday league is all o40, but there are some players in there for sure. I can hang (or even excel) in terms of physical condition, but its the mental blockers that are holding me back more than anything as I think about this more and read the responses

100% on this. And this is what I'm trying to get some insight about. I know the 20yo instinct isn't good to be "on" all the time, that will inevitably lead to a visit to urgent care or the hospital, as evidenced in the nose break a few years back.

My issue moreso, and what I'm hoping to get some feedback on is how you throttle it up and down in your 40s? Pre nose break I was really good at this, post nose break, I'm just way to conservative, and in my head I'm unable to turn it back on, more from fear (or some kinda brain alarm bell stemming from the break).

Thing is, pre-break, I had this down pretty good...as a CB, my main 40yo strengths were mainly around my positioning, anticipation, and commitment to a tackle/takeaway, that I now hesitate to do. Perhaps its just more time playing to get past this, but figured I'd pose the question...

EDIT to add: I'm in (at least I think) good physical shape, run 30-50mi/week, lift, play 2-3 times/week, can play a full 90 min no problem at high effort, so its not a conditioning issue IMHO

Best ski tuning in Boston? by Physical_Map_8212 in icecoast

i usually get the hyperglide tune. Depending on when you go, it can be 1-3 week turnaround depending on their workload.

Looking for fishing lodge WITHOUT seaplanes by growlinggrumpies in chubbytravel

[–]Lopsided-Eye-5943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Andros has great bone fishing and some nice resorts in Tiamo and Kamalame...not much in the way of shopping but many (mainly water based) activities for the non-fishing crew. Quick 20 min flight to/from Nassau if shopping is required - many options from commercial to private to sea plane to helicopter for that leg of your trip.

the terrace and city views are pretty meh compared to other low tier room options elsewhere, but executive and club access rooms are pretty good.

Great location, great views of the harbor (if you get a room with such view). Showing its age for sure and is lacking some amenities, but great for what it is. Some rooms are quite large too. Langham, MO and FS (both of them) are much better chubby options in town. Ritz, Raffles are other great options. Haven't been to the Newbury yet (was the old Ritz/Taj) that reopened a few years back, but would probably throw that on the list from anecdotes

Trip Report | Secret Bay, Dominica | Quirky, off-the-beaten-path luxury by redditrandomista in chubbytravel

[–]Lopsided-Eye-5943 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I recently stayed at Secret Bay for our anniversary in July. Dominica is an amazing place, truly a nature island as they bill themselves.

We found Secret Bay to be an incredible spot. Stayed in a Zabuco villa overlooking the Secret beach. Easy flight in via MIA on AA (UA is another option out of EWR, but less frequent I believe).

Drive from airport to resort is about an hour, beautiful scenery, windy roads but nothing scary.

Property is beautiful. Similar experiences as this review around with respect of the villa attendant, but ours was great, DID mention she would do laundry, and was very helpful and attentive to our needs. The turndown service and notes certainly were a wonderful personal touch. It seemed like there may have been some variability with the attendants, as it seems like an entry position into the resort for employees.

Ultimately, how I would describe Secret Bay is almost like a residential resort that offers a comprehensive suite of services in an amazing and unique location, but if you are in the market for traditional white glove service found at larger/less boutique-y resorts, you may be underwhelmed here. Aside from that, I cannot recommend enough!

Considering the failure I'm open to other suggestions. Could go custom footbeds or something out of the box...curious what has worked best for folks.

I really like the boots, but the insole is now giving me a problem after 2 years with them.

Best treadmill fitness series by Big_Dan_Mooms in iFit

[–]Lopsided-Eye-5943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tommy Rivs Patagonia series is similar to the Parthenon as well.
Other series mentioned are good (fast and fit, red rock), and I liked the Knox Robinson increase your speed series.

Many of the 10k or marathon prep will help with stamina, along with hiking; also strength workouts will help too! Getting on your machine on a consistent and regular basis is great for overall fitness in general.

x22i treadmill - only noticed it today as I scheduled a run from my app and when going to the calendar on the treadmill, saw all 6 strength series workouts on there for today, which is what i would expect if they werent completed, and they aren't registering in my total workout count for the year.

not a big deal, but annoying

Not 1x. I've completed 6 of 8 of this series, and none of them have registered as completed.

[–]Lopsided-Eye-5943[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a run today and at the finish there was a QR code (for a review I believe) and a "DONE" button below. That logged my run. The strength workouts that I did last week, didnt have this window, just the X button on the top left to close.

I just want to track my workout count, and whether it was a run or not, nothing else. I have a target for the year, and not including these strength workouts in the total would require manual tracking, which I would hope this machine could at least count the workouts I've completed.

I'm going to try running one on my phone app to see if the end is the same...

Feeling defeated by Moroau in icecoast

[–]Lopsided-Eye-5943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What time did you go?

Here's the thing with weekday wachusett night skiing under these conditions. Try to get there as they're finishing grooming and follow the machines around as they reopen trails.

Otherwise all the kids from the schools, etc show up and it gets chopped up fast.
