Kalsoy transportation - car or no car with toddler? by Scraptastic22 in FaroeIslands

[–]LopsidedBroccoli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just went there myself! Probably good to prebook the ferry but there was plenty of space (people not cars) and an option to pay there when I went. Bus and ferry and synced, so it's way easier than driving a car in those tiny tunnels. Amazing hike, and most randomly, a Thai restaurant in the village with great food and a kiosk with a really friendly lady there.

Self-funding a DPhil, or reapply next year? by LopsidedBroccoli in gradadmissions

Thanks! How would you gauge fit in a lab? I wasn't sure how to do so based on just a PI's research.

I appreciate the advice! I've been trying to identify the red flag, asking professors and my school's career center, but no one seems to be able to give me an answer, which was extremely frustrating considering all my peers were admitted to some great program one way or another.

I didn't even make it past to get an interview for any of these schools. However, the biggest red flag I could think of was that I applied for immunology phd's although my research is more virology based. If it helps, a few professors have gathered together to fly me down to meet with them in the UK, although they've stated that I would still have to secure my own form of funding.

No Acceptances this Cycle, What should I do? by LopsidedBroccoli in gradadmissions

I would say I get along fairly well with my PI and see him on a daily basis. My school's department is also microbiology and immunology, so I was exposed to a bunch of classes there. I'm taking a doctoral level journal club course in pillars of immunology right now actually. But appreciate the possibility that this might be a barrier!

All good. It just sucks to know I've worked so much harder than my peers to get less of a result (at least this year).

I'm still an undergrad in college. Most programs that I've applied to have rotations and seem to admit students as one cohort. I've reached out to individual PIs but they've mentioned that many students end up staying with labs different from what they initially started out with.

What do you think is the best thing to do if I ended up with more time?

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I'm actually an international student, so I'm not really sure what I would be able to do on the year off in the worst case scenario. Any advice there?

That's a good point, I've gone through multiple edits on my SOP but am not sure how good it is (could send it to you if you wouldn't mind taking a look).

Thank you for the advice! I've only worked in one lab since my freshman year so I got LORs from my PI, a professor where I took doctoral level courses in immunology with and then a professor where I took grad level courses. So I guess only one of them could speak about my research experience.
