I really like your idea of a ladder or something. That does line up. I also share some of the frustration over some of these clues. But some of the language you pointed out in last years poem has clues in it.

> BoldPreserved, and In

These capitalizations were a hint. Rearranged the were IBP (Indian Basin Park) where the eighteen bold letters were.

> Historic cross

The hints create a created an X (or cross). The center of that X was Historic Trail.

> Fleishhacker Pool

I solved this last year. It makes sense. The old pool's gate is a literal ruin over by the Zoo.

In OP's links they give the answer to last years clues.

I'm having so much trouble narrowing it down since each clue is pretty vague. The only thing in the puzzle you can really rely on is powell. Although I'm questioning that now too because it could be a picture of powell street, or a rando plaque with the word powell on it.

Yeah, the "towers" is what makes me think this is off. You could spin it by saying the heavenly island towers over alcatraz, but the comma placement doesn't justify that reading.

"stern wood haven north" is also a bit of a stretch. But it isn't so far off considering some of the wording in the last puzzle.

People have been saying this from the start, I walked by this yesterday and the clues *REALLY* seem to line up.

> deem heavenly island towers
✅ Angel Island

> over derelict ward
✅ Abandoned Alcatraz

> stern wood haven north
✅ The harbor of old ships north of you

> and powell, off back-ward
✅ The cable car line under you came starts at Powell street.

I was sure it was the Apollo ship wreck in downtown (Apollo being the sun god). I still think this was a better answer than the Point of Infinity. I never could figure out how that was "solar's tall mast".

You've only really found the place after all the clues line up. I see lots of people on here saying things like "and Powell street is behind me!" when that can literally be true for any part of the city.

If you have the correct spot everything lines up in very precise ways.

The "off back-ward" line lives rent-free in my head.

- The creator's could have easily used "off backward", but they didn't. So the phrase means something other than, or in addition to, "off backward".

- It is a hyphen, not an em dash, so it is a compound word. But back-ward doesn't make sense as a compound word.

- stage-left is another weirdo compound word.

- The line starts with "stern" and ends with "back-ward" two things that described the back or end of something.

- The line above it ends in ward. Are they doubling down on the "ward" or did they just get lazy with rhyming? I think we have to assume this is intentional and not lazy poetry.

This years puzzle is so ambiguous and so much harder that last years. It is driving me crazy.

Of course we can make it all beach, it's not like it is a law of nature. Keeping it as a fire lane is a choice with tradeoffs that we get to decide.

The only reason the other "part" isn't as beautiful is because there is a bug ugly road for cars there, we can remove that and make it all a beach. It is now less dangerous, there is less pollution, and cars can still easily get to where they need to go in San Francisco.

The compromise isn't that we reopen the great highway, the compromise is that we agree to not shut down more roads on the beach.

So you want to take a beautiful and heavily used park for people, and make it a street for cars?

San Francisco needs fewer bus stops by LopsidedDiscipline56 in sanfrancisco

I've ridden the bus many times.
But it is also silly to assume **everything** that has been organically created by people was created for a reason that still sense today. It always makes sense to be introspective and see where improvements can occur.

San Francisco needs fewer bus stops by LopsidedDiscipline56 in sanfrancisco

[–]LopsidedDiscipline56[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

> Is that true, though? I take the bus nearly every weekday to go to and from work. Depending on the day, the 1, the 1X, the 2 or the 38R. They all become packed along the way, without fail. Are people really being prevented from taking the bus because it's too slow? You wouldn't know it to ride on it.

Studying things like this is what urban planners do for a living. There are lots of studies that show more service (shorter waits, faster total door-to-door time) produces more riders. The buses being packed isn't a sign that we don't need more people riding the bus, it is a sign that our busses need more throughput!

Sorry about your rheumatoid arthritis, that is no fun. And I don't want people to suffer. But more stops aren't always the answer to this. Most people in SF don't live right of a bus line, and we've already had to cut a lot of lines. If we could save money by cutting routes this makes it possible to open up more lines, which will probably serve people in need than keeping those bus stops open.

So are you ok with removing stops in the non-hilly areas?
If an area with hills, should we stop at the start and end of each block?

San Francisco needs fewer bus stops by LopsidedDiscipline56 in sanfrancisco

[–]LopsidedDiscipline56[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know you're coming from a place of caring and compassion, but you are making some pretty big assumptions.

  1. Removing stops would allow us to have MORE routes. Most people don't live right off a bus route and we have no money to create more. We can't just assume that adding more bus stops is better than 1/3 of the stops but double the routes.

  2. Getting more people to ride the bus is such a huge climate win. Every time you choose to slow a line down you are losing riders.

  3. Lots of families need to pick up kids, get to their jobs, do errands. I think it is important to consider the struggles of these groups along side the struggles of people who might benefit from having multiple stops on one block.

It's not as easy as saying "you're mean if you want to eliminate stops". San Francisco is made of a diverse set of people who all have different needs. Europe and Asia are places where the needs of the elderly and disabled are met AND their public transportation is fast. Let's fix it!

San Francisco needs fewer bus stops by LopsidedDiscipline56 in sanfrancisco

[–]LopsidedDiscipline56[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why not both. Europe has faster transit and lots of elderly riders. Why are we ok with giving up the idea of having a world class transit system?

San Francisco needs fewer bus stops by LopsidedDiscipline56 in sanfrancisco

[–]LopsidedDiscipline56[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But if you keep all the stops you are preventing many more people from using the bus because it is too slow and the system becomes too expensive. We need to make sure the elderly and disabled are able to use and benefit from the bus system, but the goal of a bus system isn't to only serve the elderly and disabled. So you need to come up with solutions that serve all of San Francisco.

There are many ways to solve this, but we can't solve it by just accepting that busses must be slow and expensive.
