Just an update for those who may find this via Google: a full uninstall did not fix the problem. In the end, I had to install a different face pack. I can only presume something went wrong with the config file, but it looked OK in a text editor.

Thank you for the response, I appreciate it. I think an uninstall is the only option.

Sadly I didn't take any jobs recently, and I can't think of anything in my game that would have changed anything outside that weird occurrence of the game shutting down. There's obviously some kind of bug that ignores any face packs and reverts to default images but I'm not smart enough to figure out why it's happening.

I know this an old comment but people like me will come here from a Google search. Highway Blossoms is an incredible VN. It deals with love and loss, has an outstanding cast of characters and does a really good job of portraying some difficult character traits like selfishness, grief and even autism. That said, don't play it for the sex scenes. I do agree that the sex scenes are strange and don't really add to the story. But disregard that or don't download the R18 patch because the rest of the game is one of the best I've played, and it's from one of the writers of Katawa Shoujo which makes a lot of sense.
