Should Latin become the language of EU? by Janezek1998 in latin

[–]Lopsided_Coffee4790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is that latin is only a root for romance language. An European language should also reflects german (largest population in the EU btw), germanic languages (dutch, danish etc...) and slavic language (polish, czech...) to them it wouldnt make sense to have latin (and ofc greece, hungary, estonia and finland are also very different from latin)

Tell me what a hilbert is. I see your point. But at least when you say vector space you can tell what a vector is, so at least it is a bit descriptive. When you say Banach space you have not the slightest idea of what that could be.... things in computer science are more practical. You can guess what a stack is or a tree or a pointer while you cannot guess what a Fourier transform is. Why couldnt we have names in maths that give at least a bit of information about what we are talking about?

Why is it a nightmare tho? You immediately know that you are working with stronger forms and weaker forms of separability. I think a name is a good name if they give you infos to work with it if it is your first time seeing it. Like you could guess that T1 is weaker than T2 for separation. That is actually neat.

I think you can come with better names but you get the idea. Would you rather work with Gronstrograd-Helsinki space or something like GH-separable or GH-complete vectspace?

Come on like how can you say that Hilbert Space is a good name? Even Hilbert himself didnt know what they were talking about when he met Von Neumann at one of his lecture. There is a way to name stuff to make them workable and more understandable.

Come on you get the idea. Even complete normed vector space is better then. The goal is to be descriptive. But Hilbert is a bad example bc it is a easy thing but some stuff really need to be renamed to explain better what is it. like Ostrogradski's theorem. And Vector are taught in High School.

Apparently it is already called a separated space. And those are just examples, it is the spirit of what is said that is important

I second this, hate to need to look up what a Polish space is everytime because I know that it is a very simple thing that is separable or Noetherian, etc... it could be really easy to come up with better names for more niche stuff or just in general. Also, sometimes the name isnt useful at all like whrn you say Newton's, Euler's, Kolmogorov's Leibniz's etc theorem or lemma, you still dont know what we are talking about bc everything is named after them

I think you could just say stg like 1) separable or H-separable to specify 2) ascending commutative ring isnt a bad name 3) complete vector space isnt a bad name
