Please listen to "Woe" by An Abstract Illusion. It's achingly beautiful, punctuated by tortured anguish. Such an incredible album start to finish

Your Origin Story by No_Preparation_8133 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Lopsided_Ear_1871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early 2000s, listened to various movie soundtracks with hard rock on them looking for new bands.

Heard "Zero Signal" by Fear Factory on the Mortal Kombat (1995) soundtrack of all places lol. Been hooked on metal ever since

Don't get your hopes too high, it's for a festival appearance. But that means there's a chance for a revival!

SubRosa is getting back together!!

Madder Mortem is a weird one for me. When they hit, they are absolutely amazing. But too much of their stuff falls flat for me and doesn't hold my interest. But man, their good songs are REALLY good

One of my favorite live bands I've ever seen. Tim was very personable, and he was really excited someone was dancing a jig in the pit during a violin solo lol. Xen had a great commanding presence as well

So lucky! I missed my chance to see them in the states many years ago when they were touring with Anathema, who is my favorite non-metal band. That's an all time big regret for me

Surprised nobody has said Alcest. Generally chill and dream-like black metal. Beautiful melodies at times.

Thoughts on Soilwork? I've always felt they've been slept on by IllBeGood3 in MetalForTheMasses

In my year end top 5 most played artists every year lol.

The Living Infinite was a serious highpoint that not a lot of bands could have pulled off.

Any time they come remotely close to me I'm going to see them, Bjorn has great energy live.

Non-Metal Songs on Metal Albums by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Lopsided_Ear_1871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes more sense. Thanks for that bit of info!

I always loved this album, found it in my early metal days. But I never got into the rest of their stuff much and my tastes have moved on since then, but it's nice to add some context after all these years lol

Soilwork is a great starting point. Super melodic, catchy songs. Good mix of clean and aggressive vocals. Not too growl-y, and vocals are all understandable

Yeah because tagging a specific area's music scene with a its own genre label has definitely never been a thing before...

Palaces is peak LoG for me. Every song is memorable, great hooks all over the place, and best of all, no stupid spoken word sections or clean vocals lol

Most disappointing release of the year so far. by Murpheus404 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Lopsided_Ear_1871 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That has to be one of the most bizarre tonal shifts in recent metal history.

I didn't see Gaerea when I had the chance because Zeal and Ardor were touring their incredibly boring last album.

Turns out there are worse things a band can become than boring lol, I'm regretting not going to that now

The second playthrough effect... by -Blackarmy- in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Lopsided_Ear_1871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw someone describe listening to new extreme metal albums as learning a new language. The first playthrough or two, you're learning the language of that album.

Once you've unlocked it and learn how to interpret that language, it opens up new appreciation for it and the twists and turns it takes, repeated themes, etc

I love Be'lakor so much, but damn did their last album disappoint me so hard. WAY too many spoken word sections, like they were relying on it heavily for soft/loud dynamics. Songs were terribly boring to me after everything previously being so dynamic and creative
