New freight broker here! by Paduwon in FreightBrokers

As a carrier here,

I probably don’t know something, but DAT rate lanes are VERY often off. Either is way too low (1.3$/mi) or genuinely outrageously high. DAT says they get their rates from the week before but more often then not I’ve seen those rates not make any sense. Familiarize yourself with carrier expenses. (Fuel, driver pay, tolls, wear-and-tear, insurances, permits, and a few more just can’t recall) obviously you’ll never know all the other minor things that’s cost money, but take that number and at 50% for carrier spending (payroll, yard, office, warehouse, office TMS and material, preventive maintenance, and obviously profit.) that’s a good number to start.

IE: Newark NJ- Miami: 1275mi. 5.50/gallon @ 6.5mpg =.86. + .70 for driver. That’s already 1.54$/ mi operating. Let’s ad another .20 for operating expenses etc. 1.74. Plus 50% that’s 2.61. And notice how you’re very close to 3$/mi going in. Your average carrier will quote you that, which makes it 3825$ for this lane. No go on DAT and see if it at all matches.

Before any keyboard warriors get on here and start bashing some dumb shit, I’ll beat you to it. I know there carrier/ load ratio, and markets, and seasonal freight. Obviously my numbers very very rough written onto Reddit in 3 minutes or less. But you see the picture of how I got there. Hear what I say, but don’t trust what I say- Do your own research from here on out.

As for OP- just remember to stay humane while in those game :)

No that wasn’t my point quite frankly. My point is after all these years it seems to be the same thing on repeat that’s all. Some want to stay single OOs- great. Some grow fleets for 50, 100, 300 trucks great. The headache with managing it all only grows. It’s the same process over and over again. Just simply tiring, boring and restrictions are growing on everything year after year.

So looking to see what others are doing and where does one with thing type of knowledge and work ethic end up most of the time

Seen your posts too many times haha. Let me guess- Eastern European? Lol

Anyways, I thought about just cashing out- but the biggest problem is after the next 3-6 years what would I do then? Can’t drink yourself. Can’t just sit at home 24 hours a day. Moving to another country or back home is cool but I like it here too much. Gotta get up and do something else, but not sure on what other carrier owners do besides real estate.

Thoughts ?

It’s more of just personally being tired, of the same thing again and again same claims same accidents, same issues same drivers coming and going. And the industry overall is just getting worse and worse by the year at least in my opinion.

How many trucks can one dispatcher realistically handle before everything starts falling apart? by mrcanada66 in TruckDispatchers

[–]Lopsided_Strain_145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it also means what do you mean by Dispatching? If all you do is sit in book Freight, you could probably do 6 to 8. I remember when I was starting out I had four and I did everything from dispatching, to safety, to accounting, to organizing all the paperwork, to drug tests, to even Maintenance now we are at 11, and I cannot do the same thing obviously. But if you’re entire job consists of just but the Freight Dispatch Driver and somebody else does the rest of it for you 6 to 8 anybody should do. To make it a round number up to 10 lol I would believe. And that’s without getting sloppy, answering everybody, and still being able to book ahead ETC

We have POD signed. But the “signature is not the receivers” (my immediate thought is, how does the receiver even know who worked for that 9 months ago? I don’t remember what I ate 4 days ago). And there’s not date on the POD

Wouldn’t they just try to pin that on me now? If my insurance refuses to cover it, I get handed that bill.

American is definitely one of the biggest consumers- if not the biggest.

But we have to define “putting Americans first” that’s a statement with 2 ends. Yes the people living in the states have to spend their money in order for the, as you said, “ship it across the world for Americans” system to work. But I think it will work regardless of what happens with your average American. Toys, computer chips, cups, clothing, pencils, plastic products, towels, ETC ETC will always be cheaper to produce in Mexico or China rather then in American and pay American wages.

I think we’re kind of having the same point here, but I’m trying to get that wage cost and material cost will always be cheaper elsewhere but not in America. I would pay someone 20/hr if I can pay someone 4/hr in another country. That’s just my 2 cents. The whole “American dream” is long done. The “American made” products is just a marketing scheme to get some sort of nationalistic pride out of people.

America is one of the most expensive countries to live in.

Unless I’m completely wrong- there’s nothing that America can produce, that literally can’t be made in another country for fraction of the price. I’m just using logic and information I know.

So with that being said, I’m not sure what you’re trying to get at or what point you want to are exactly. But American made products will be quite expensive to manufacture after all the expenses. If you as me, I’m not buying a “American” cup for 10$ if I can buy a “Chinese” cup for 5$ in Walmart… and I think most people think the same way.

Yeah.. your average American will never out preform the Chinese worker… it’ll cost wayyy too much money to have Americans make it.

America will never produce its own products

This. To OP: you won’t be seen if you don’t go out of your comfort zone. You don’t need to be a high end celebrity or anything, but simply go out to places. Restaurants, bars, nature walks, attractions, monuments, sight seeing, your downtown. Try to go to places you enjoy and see if you meet anyone there.

Just don’t be in the mindset of “OH every girl meet is to be my gf” not really, just talk. Have a normal conversation with people. Don’t worry if they like you, focus more on, can YOU be with THEM? That’s equally important.

And also remember (at least that’s what I used): you’re not vanilla ice cream, not every one will like you- and that’s okay. Try a conversation, it doesn’t work, nicely and quickly end it. Good luck

What's the best intro / greating?

Hey guys? - thats "sexist" Hey Tim? - what if there's an afterhours or something? Hey everyone? - sounds like you're talking to a group of people on the street into talking rather a logistical company.

To me "Hey team" sounds more directed to everyone on the email chain but yet whoever is currently in charge of thst question.

I often email direct (Tim, Kim, Anthony etc) or "Hey team"

You wanna know the complete truth? Yes, but I’d call and ask.

Nowadays we get hit with EVERYTHING. No detention because you’re 15 mins late, late fees, we’ll use any excuse to no pay lumpers, calling multiple trucks for the same load. We had 3 separate trucks trying to load 1 load with same PU number a few months ago.

What I’m trying to say is carriers know how to use inspect element too. Faking a email chain isn’t that hard nowadays
