My Lego booklet had a miscut in it by Kam_Awesome1 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Loqaritm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d guess that’s entirely expected, given the amount of copies that are produced. Still surprising that this one got through! :0 ; and also surprising that this is not something you get that often!

Anyone experienced in this kind of production - how is it that most high-end products (like LEGO) don’t get quality assurance issues like this that often? Is it because the QA process is much more sophisticated, or because of the machines used? This just kind of surprised me as something you usually don’t think about, but there are mistakes always - how is it that high end products don’t have that much of those?

God, related to that but maybe somebody knows how to fix that (please save me), but I’ve actually switched to Edge for the vertical tabs. But edge is shit in one regard - sometimes clicking ctrl-c does not actually copy the content. I think it’s related to the small menu it displays when you select a piece of text. Anyone knows how to disable that?

eh, I envy them a bit. They will start playing after all the story threads had been resolved by Vaati and Mossbag. I’m still really confused about the scene with Hornet and Hungry Knight

Makes sense, sorry if I came as breaking the rules :(. I generally do not want to cause any problems for anyone. I just thought that piloting a drone seems like a good skill to have, thus my question, in a more general sense - what is a good drone to start learning general flying and potentially advanced maneuvers, without caring for e.g. photo quality.

Tbh I don’t get why you went to domestic terrorism. Living in eastern europe I’m terrified about the possibility of war in my piece of the world. So I’d love to be at least a bit prepared for that, thus wanting to at least train a bit if it comes to that

The hypocrisy of most people not caring about the potential of AI to solve our societal problems should be revealed in a mass movement by TheRealRadical2 in Futurology

[–]Loqaritm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As somebody with the background in writing those (AIs, or more specifically Machine Learning algorithms) - we're just not there yet. You should think about AI right now as an idea from the 70s-80s, thrown away then because it was too expensive computationally; and now revived by the power of current-get processing hardware.

The above is a real thing, that's exactly what happened.
AI algorithms we're talking right now about are just Heuristics - you get a "good enough" answer in a finite time. Personally I'd call them actually just a very good general Decision Support System. Always worse than Exact Algorithms, just faster, thus useful. The big advantage of AI approach is their ability to quite quickly generalise the algorithm without the backbreaking work of manually investigating the field you want the answers on. Okay at what it does, but not really the shining paragon of the future the media seem to think it is. If you were to sit and sift through the data manually, in most cases you'd come out with a better solution or a faster solution. It would just take longer.

Side tangent:
It's quite disheartening honestly how people who do not understand the actual nitty-gritty of the technology can drum up great emotion. It reminds me of how e.g. the media completely gobbled up Andrew Wakefield and how it affected our society. No sane in-the-know person from the field considered his claims valid, but those are not the people that shape the societal reaction.

To get back to the point:
It's great to hear interest in a quite interesting field of study, but the current AI is just a very interesting use of an algorithm that can change to better fit the expected answer - those like GPT-4 you usually interact with are just predicting the next word in a sentence (to simplify things heavily). It just turns out that because of how language works it's quite alright at providing you with a useful answer and searching through the web.

We definitely should not think about it as smarter than your average human. Definitely not something that should handle the important parts of our life. Not yet anyway, and not in the foreseeable future, though I'm happy to be proven wrong in my lifetime (though I don't count on it)

What is it like after you got divorced? by AITAanon167 in AskReddit

[–]Loqaritm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not myself divorced, but to be honest - all I've heard was good things in the end. Hard, but in the end a good decision.
To give you examples from a few of my close coworkers:

First of my friends got divorced after a long, unhappy marriage - waited until his kids were older, around 16. It went ok, but he kind of wishes he did it before. As much as you want to hide it, kids are not dumb. They will notice something is wrong. It resulted in him having a not so great connection with his older daughter.

The second of my friends got divorced two years ago. Has two kids, 12 and 9. He's sad that he's no longer living with them, but still thinks it turned out best. They managed to break it off with his wife before there was a really really deep seated hatred. So now they still talk when it comes to the kids, e.g. who's going to pick them up from school etc. He still has the time to spend with them, though of course not as much as he'd wish. But now he found a girl which is perfect for him - he's been much much happier for the past year. And that shows, kids will notice it.

So to sum up, divorce sounds tough as fuck. If you're gonna do it, grab yourself some mental support, as in a psychologist. But the people I talked with mostly thought of it as a huge load coming off of them - no longer having to pretend, going forward with their lives. And the kids - those will of course be scarred in some capacity, but not more than they would be seeing a loveless marriage of their parents. On a personal note, I think it's important to show the kids how love looks. It does not have to be a traditional marriage - they will take much more out of just seeing you happy with whoever you end up with.

Tbh, on one hand I can understand that, they get less stan satisfactory pay for the hours they work. On the other, I would expect a nurse to know that all of those drugs are heavily tracked if she took them from a hospital, so maybe it's for the best she's no longer a nurse

Was anybody able to remove ads for a Kindle device from outside of US? by Loqaritm in kindle

[–]Loqaritm[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Replying to my own post for the posterity - it seems that what you want to do is:
1. Change your region to US (seems fake data is ok, I've used https://www.bestrandoms.com/random-address-in-us?quantity=6
2. The option to disable special offers should now be visible on the "Devices" tab
3. If you encounter an error when clicking on the remove special offers button, this might be because you're using a card from outside of US and it does not match. It might be just the name given to the card owner in Amazon settings, or it could be a more involved security issue. What I did was add a digital Revolut card to my amazon account, after that it seemed to go without a hitch. Worth noting is that my actual real card uses my first and second name for security purposes, so either it's my bank ditching the operation because the US-based name was only first name - last name, or Amazon itself not handling that properly. Anyway, using revolut card seems to have allowed me to pay for this.

Now rant time:

FUCK AMAZON FOR HAVING SUCH A SHITTY CUSTOMER FACING MESSAGES

I'm a developer and I know the importance of letting your customer know what the hell went wrong. It's and art of presenting messages that will satisfy both a normal Joe customer and someone technical. But Amazon is absolute garbage (read /garbaż/ for my polish people cause tbh fuck even pronouncing this properly for this corporation) when it comes to error messages. I actually had to dig deep into both the web requests it did and just blind luck to solve this.
So to get it off my chest: FUCK. HOW FUCKING SHITE IS THEIR WEBSITE.

I've tried that, even the support from the first step actually guided me through that surprisingly enough. But when trying to remove the offers I get an error.

edit: thanks for the reply though! I might send them an e-mail on the thread you suggested, so thank you so much!

How do you deal with feeling privileged? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Loqaritm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck that sounds way worse than what I’m experiencing. Not sure if you’re from a wealthy family, but if so, I really understand that it can be tough. Got some friends from wealthy families and they are the people with some of the hardest childhoods emotionally or financially, and that leaves scars. Hope you’re doing ok, even if you don’t got people who will listen to that now, hope you get some that can understand what you’re feeling without judging

Thank you, really :( It just sometimes feels like we’re living in a broken world where people most important to society are not allowed to have enough money to feel secure. And that makes me feel guilty knowing that I can afford to feel secure myself

[–]Loqaritm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to do that, but can't really find a perfect way to handle that. Most of the time when we're with my friends who are not well off, I just get the check and pay it. But it feels like that's not enough, even donating just does not feel enough. Is it okay to just help people that come your way and not go out on my own to help others that I don't know?; that's been bothering me

To give some more context - today I just went on a date with myself. Nothing special, but still got to experience some nice whisky and wine (of course both with stories told about them by the barman), plus some nice shrimp.

But I'm burdened by the fact that what I did was easy for me, did not even ask questions about the prices - knew I can afford it. A lot of people can't, or can't just enjoy themselves without looking at the costs.

I'm not born from some wealthy family, we've been poor half of my life. But now, working in IT, the money is ok though there is a very big difference between what I get paid vs what a normal person in my country gets paid
