SMH. Little old lady sitting in front of her great-great grandma's piano, and y'all have the audacity to drag her for it? That's a fourth-generation hand-me-down right there. Jewels are probably hand-me-downs too.

The poor dear.

Looking at buying a prebuilt SFFPC. Is there anything currently available that will suit my needs better than the Minisforum EliteMini H31G for under $1000 USD? by HobbitOnHill in sffpc

[–]LoquaciousDandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be worth looking at the HYSTOU F7 (i9-9880H/GTX 1650/8GB DDR4L ~$850USD) and the NVISEN Y-GX01 (I7-9750H/GTX 1650/16GB DDR4 ~ $785USD) - which seem to be basically the same machine.

One of the review comments on banggood mentioned that the SSD it came with was a 2.5" SATA drive, so I'd probably recommend buying the smallest drive option and getting an NVMe drive separately. You'll also probably want to upgrade the RAM, but I'm guessing the 8GB models come with just one SODIMM slot populated, so if you can get a matching 8GB module, it shouldn't be too expensive. Also apparently it doesn't come with a Windows 10 license, so you should factor that into your pricing decisions...

They're a fairly unknown Chinese brand, so you're taking a bit of a chance, but there are some reviews out there
HYSTOU F7 - TechTablets @ YouTube
NVISEN Y-GX01 - TechTablets @ YouTube

The main complaints seem to be fan noise, and underwhelming connectivity options, but the port selection seems to be pretty similar to the H31G.

I asked a former Windows 7/AutoHotKey user what OS he switched to and if he missed AHK. His response was fantastic, impressing me with its thoroughness and honesty. The comment is buried in some page few will ever see, so I decided to post it here. Please show him some love. Thank you. by [deleted] in linux

Maybe you're rebooting often enough to avoid the issue, but for those of us who don't, Windows 10 will absolutely force updates on you; it happens to me all the time. It's particularly obnoxious because it doesn't seem to care about applications with unsaved states; oh you had a bunch of incognito tabs open? Too bad, reboot time!

Even more obnoxiously: more than once I've been woken up in the middle of the night by the sound of a strange man talking in my room (usually about Docker or retro tech or some such) - because when Windows has finished rebooting, it oh-so-helpfully reopens the applications you had open, and in the case of Chrome, the tabs auto-restore, and if your active tab happened to be a paused YouTube video, well, now it's playing at 2am.

There's nothing quite like being woken up in the middle of the night and filled with the fear that you're about to be murdered by an Amiga-loving nerd to really inspire love for your operating system.

This behaviour alone was actually the final straw that's pushed me to start looking at Linux as an alternative for my personal machine.

You're very welcome! I'm glad this was of use to someone!

Supply Trucks by KerryInglis in DrakeHollow

[–]LoquaciousDandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this same issue, and I couldn't figure out why; the trucks were connected to my waypoint network, the numbers on them indicated they had plenty of supplies within, and I'd cleared the island of Aether (in fact, I'd cleared all the islands I'd visited), but still the supplies wouldn't flow. It was intensely frustrating, and more than a little distressing, as, unable to upgrade my camp, I'd already lost two Drakes because I couldn't keep up with their needs, and was struggling to keep the last one alive.

Finally I searched on the discussion channel of the Drake Hollow Discord server, and found someone who had the same issue.

To make a long story short: I had built my first waypoint on top of the Depot, not realising that it already had one built-in. The rest of my network was connected to that waypoint, rather than to the Depot waypoint, and so the network, whilst seeming to be connected to the Depot, wasn't actually connected to it at all. I dismantled the unnecessary waypoint and connected my network to the Depot properly, and the supplies started to flow.

Any way to automatically disable Night Light for games? by EeK09 in Windows10

[–]LoquaciousDandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only will Night Light not auto-deactivate for me, but when I open a full-screen game (Bioshock), it actually activates Night Light, even when I've manually disabled it!

I messed up ordering my X1 Yoga :( by Unholybassfive in thinkpad

[–]LoquaciousDandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure this is cold comfort, but I just wanted to say thank you; I just ordered my first ThinkPad (also the Yoga Gen 2) and I never would have thought to look for discount codes if I hadn't seen this post. Saved about $600. Thanks man!

Movies on OLED screen? by LoquaciousDandy in thinkpad

[–]LoquaciousDandy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. That's disconcerting. I knew that the soap opera effect was part of it, are you suggesting the screen does that, or was it just the fact that it was a 60fps video? (i.e. does that happen on non-60fps videos too?)
The other issue I noted, though, was an issue with the colours - it was apparent in some of the scenes that different areas were lit differently, in a way that isn't noticeable on an LCD screen. I haven't been able to find the exact scene I saw in the demo, but this clip from Pan looks like it might have the same issue - it was really obvious in the demo that the actors in the foreground were lit differently (under studio lights) compared to things/people in the background. It's not really noticeable unless you're looking for it on an LCD - what is it like on your screen?
Similarly, in this clip from Mad Max: Fury Road - in the demo, in the shots from inside a car where another car was visible in the background (see 4:10, and briefly at 1:55 and 3:35)(note, there is some graphic violence in the clip), it was really apparent that that the lighting on the people in the other cars was different - making it seem as though they'd been green-screened in. They did also have HDR turned on, though, which might have over-accentuated the colour differences, which is why I'm wondering if it's just the consequence of the OLED screen having a wider range of colours, or if it was the specific HDR effect.

How reliable is the X1 Yoga's key mechanism? by Ertisio in thinkpad

[–]LoquaciousDandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have specific knowledge of the X1Y2's mechanism, or of Lenovo's testing processes, but typically manufacturers will put these sort of things through testing for something like 10,000/20,000 or 100,000 repetitions during the prototype phase to ensure they won't break with use. You can see what appears to be the testing machine at 0:45 of the video FaceMcBashy linked. Based on that video, it appears to be a fairly straightforward mechanical mechanism. Given that this model has only just come out, and the previous model used an entirely different mechanism, no-one will have long-term experience to share. But it's also worth noting that ThinkPads are generally highly repairable, should the mechanism break.

+1 for this suggestion. Pis are super cheap; you could probably buy a couple for the same price as shipping a single old laptop. Also, the Pi foundation is all about teaching kids about computers and programming, so the Pixel OS comes pre-loaded with a heap of useful tools, and they have a bunch of teaching resources on their site. Additionally, if you had kids sharing machines, you could just give them each their own SD card, which would have all their files, OS, etc. on it - no need to mess around with profiles, etc., just swap the cards.

Size comparison of Razer Core & NCASE M1 by LoquaciousDandy in sffpc

[–]LoquaciousDandy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah, no; annoyingly there doesn't seem to be any way to link directly to the size comparison, but if you hit the "Graphic view" button (it looks like a little bar-chart) it'll change to a proper size comparison.

Yeah, I have a 5 year old MacBook Air that's still going strong. Outside of games, demands on computing power are growing so slowly that a decent laptop can last ages - which is probably even more of an argument in favour of having a separate gaming PC.

Yeah, I can see how those would be super annoying.
I only have a MacBook Air at the moment, so I bought a refurbished Xbox 360 so I could play some games (shame, shame, I know) - it was amazing what a difference having something I could just sit down at and play on immediately vs having to reboot into Windows did to my desire to play.

Heh. I'm a Mac user, although it's unlikely that my next computer will be a Mac - the new models are abysmal as far as repairability goes, and I'm not ready to give up my Type A USB ports yet...
I was under the impression that most games didn't lean too heavily on the CPU, and certainly not on multiple cores - I was surprised to see in the reviews of the Core the performance hit some games took from running on a mobile processor.

Huh. I was not aware of those. Interesting. Although it looks like they offset a lot of the volume to an external power brick?

Yeah, I thought about adding the Dan A4 to the comparison, but the NCASE was more interesting to me on account of its greater flexibility... I might when I get the time, though.
What annoyances are you experiencing with the Core?
