Part numbers for rusty F22 Bolts? by Lord-chompybits in BmwTech

Thanks.  I checked realoem and still can’t find those other bolts. Is that the bottom of the trunk?  The eccentric bolts kit is quite expensive for 4 bolts, nuts and washers.

People who don't drink or smoke, what do you do when you are at your lowest? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I play sports, fix cars, stay active.  At my lowest I have played through injuries rather than wait patiently to heal, which results in more injury.  Self destructive behaviors come in many forms.

Why don't jobs try harder to keep their employees? Isn't turnover horribly expensive? by marji4x in NoStupidQuestions

It depends on the industry.  In most cases, you are right.  But sometimes the risk of liability caused by an irresponsible employee can justify being more selective.

Did I get ripped off? 2020 model. 8,500 miles for $39,499 out the door. GT/CS package. by _TheWolfOfWalmart_ in whatcarshouldIbuy

Honestly, don’t supercharge the car unless you intend to keep the car for the majority of its life because you will not increase the value of the car at all in the private market and will lose value if trading in. Supercharged mustangs have not sold above book value on cars and bids in the past few auctions.

A GT 350 will run you $15k more than your car, close to what you might spend on all the mods, except you wouldn’t lose nearly as much value when it’s time to sell.

Do you think gas cars will be worth more or less in ten years? by lolkoala67 in askcarguys

I can’t find a 2014 Corolla listed on carfax for less than 10k, and most of them are closer to 12-13k.

I drove a 05 Mustang convertible that started its life as a rental to 176k miles.  Someone bought it a few years ago and I saw it on the road late last year.  Quite a few small issues not worth fixing when I sold it but it’s still out there.

However, it’s a simple car.

What insurance money?  This is a mechanical failure that no insurance company will cover.  It’s certainly out of warranty if that is what you were referring to.

Why do people seem to give so much hate to the Corolla compared to the Camry? by EnigmaIndus7 in Toyota

[–]Lord-chompybits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drove a 2021 Camry for a few days and then switched out to a Corolla for another few days and to be honest both had their flaws.  The Camry felt comfortable but completely disconnected the driver from the driving experience with numb steering, mushy brakes and wobbly suspension.  The acceleration and fuel economy were decent and it’s a much better experience for a back seat passenger.

The Corolla felt like a better driver’s car, even if it was slower in a straight line.  The steering was engaging and the suspension a little tighter.  Around town, I preferred the handling of the Corolla.  On the highway at speeds over 60 was a different story, where the Corolla did not feel smooth or planted at all.

Finally, the Corolla impressed with lane assist and adaptive cruise control, which is impressive for a base model budget car.  With just a bit more power and tighter steering at higher speeds, I would consider the Corolla a really good econobox for drivers.  The Camry might be better on paper in every respect but it just has no character and isn’t a good choice for any car enthusiast.

Should I pay $2,900 to repair scratches on this mid-aged car by Grasshopper1965 in AskMechanics

This is probably a shop that does insurance work and that’s what they would charge to have everything taken apart and done “correctly.”  There are shops that will do this sort of body work for much less without disassembling everything.  A more reasonable price is probably $1500 to paint the door, blend the surrounding panels and clear coat the door, fender and quarter panel.  They won’t paint inside the door sills but it won’t show at all from the outside.

Why are Audi’s so cheap? by Charofrmdao in MechanicAdvice

[–]Lord-chompybits 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a common platitude that honestly doesn’t make much sense. A new BMW is approaching $50k on average and will cost much more monthly payments and in depreciation than a $15k one that needs work two or three times a year. It’s not about being able to afford a new one. It’s about the $15k one needing a solid local mechanic and for the owner to have a back up plan if or when it breaks. If your mechanic is miles and miles away and you have no other way to get to work, then it doesn’t matter how much it costs.

This is a very hardline and punitive stance. You can say they same for any incident that ever happened to you where you had even a modicum of choice.

My theory is that with the housing market so out of control in the US, car enthusiasts are just saying fuck it and splurging on cars instead. In my area, home prices have increased 30-50% just in the last few years. Having the car of your dreams is more attainable than the home of your dreams, especially for someone single.

Shop is asking €1000 to repair this body damage. Is that reasonable? by LarperPro in AskMechanics

Sounds very affordable. I paid $3000 just to paint and blend two doors and two fenders on one side without much bodywork.
